It all started on June 19th, 1987 when I lost oxygen at birth for a window of time due to the doctor’s lack of experience and lack of immediate action to get me out which caused me to be diagnosed with cerebral palsy two years later. This crucial window of time at my birth would change my life forever.
Because of my lack of oxygen, I was technically dead for a minute until the doctor started my heart again when I finally came out.
My cerebral palsy would ultimately affect how I walked, moved, talked, and interacted with society. I became inspired and determined to use my life to break down misperceptions about disability and those who are marginalized in the world through filmmaking because I thought if I don’t do it how is the world going to change for the better.
Living with cerebral palsy meant that I faced a lot of unequal treatment from ableist prejudices and by laws in the United States which impacted the income I could live on and marriage itself. I have always been a fighter and I feel that when it comes to disability especially, a disability is just a shell of who we really are, and as people with disabilities, we deserve all the same things given to the able-bodied. Join me in encouraging a better understanding of disability.
Alexander graduated from Emerson College with a bachelor’s degree in film production and specialized in directing. As a student, he founded the social impact production company, Outcast Productions which produces films and series about social justice. As a public speaker, Alexander focuses on topics such as understanding cerebral palsy, disability and sexuality, disability and parenting, and introduction to filmmaking and marketing.
Alexander is the winner of the 2014 Advocates in Disability Award, a national award given by The HSC Foundation.
Alexander is also the father of
Maya Ella Freeman.
