I've had mine, for about 2 years but only started using it almost a year ago. I don't section my hair just grab and hold as for the back I find it helps to hold the hair horizontally outwards and pass the brush through it vertically. We have very similar thick hair that needs controlling! (Maybe its a northern thing!)
My brush is like yours just has a different look to the way it turns on
