Yeah, I can get with everything but this. We shouldn't subscribe to one specific style or aesthetic if we don't want to. Trends will always cycle back around. I have both skinny jeans and straight leg jean options because it depends on the outfit honestly
Totally hear what you are all saying, and I hope it didn’t come off like you have to follow trends. I’m actually pretty bad at following trends, and often it can lead to wastefulness, and you all are right that ultimately we should each wear what we want to and what we feel comfortable in! I more use “trends” as an excuse or a cognitive strategy to help myself be more open to the idea of letting things go that I don’t really need. It’s not that I eliminate something entirely just because of a trend. It’s just a helpful way to help myself cognitively let go of the less good versions of things I have in my wardrobe. If something’s out of style anyway, I should really love it to keep it. Not just keep it because I’ve always had it. (But also feel free to disregard this one if it doesn’t apply or help you!) I clearly didn’t articulate this one well, and now I kind of wish I could go back and explain that part of the video better! I kind of overstated what my point was. But thanks to you all for pointing this out! It’s all about nuance!
My daughter is 8 months, and motherhood has really revealed the next layer of decluttering and minimalism for me. I’ve always been in a lifestyle of decluttering, but I’ve realized there’s an amount of inventory I was previously able to manage, but now it needs to be even less. The rule really is just keep decluttering, get rid of even more. This weekend’s realization: Declutter items that I put on when getting dressed but then take off for whatever reason. These are the ones that end up in a pile on the floor, not dirty but need to be hung up, and I just don’t have time for extra items to manage (:
I know it is easy to keep the old toothbrush or brush head, stained and lumpy pillow, old bathroom scrubber, make up stained washcloths, tattered dish towels, etc., but sometimes you just need to replace the gross stuff.
I have reached the age where I know I physically won't be able to do as much around the house, while I can I am trying to declutter and future proof my house. I have completed the first wave, the obvious things that can go, next year I will be more focused and work my way through what is left. I know there will come a time when things will get more difficult for me, I need to be prepared.

Older people esp those living alone need to pass things down to heirs, what they dont want donate to local charities or run ads selling items. Most older women I know have way too much stuff in my retirement community. way into their 80's, a burden on heirs also. Ex: bookcases full of books no one wants anymore.
Hey Elin, thanks for the reminder! You taught me not to buy a backup, especially not a backup for backup 😁 I've learned! My advice for the new year is to go through the kitchen and use up sauces, pasta, baking stuff etc. Saves money in January and liberates you immensely! Have a great Christmas and all the best for your family 🎄🦌🍪
As much as I try to prep before Christmas with decluttering kid toys, we always bring in more than I get rid of. But what's important is that I'm trying to teach my kids to make these decisions and explain why we should declutter while they are young. I've already seen the action on their end though because my kids weekly are setting something on my bed during clean up of things they find that they don't want anymore. So while we didn't get rid of as much before Christmas as I would have liked, I do see the Ling term goal win of them growing up with this skill set and knowledge that I've had to teach myself the last few years. We are learning together and that is so precious to me. ❤
I've always had a small box where I put things (one sock, one glove, one Barbie shoe, etc.) where I can't find the match. I've always labeled it "Misfits". The other half usually shows up later. I also put little parts that seem like they fell off something and I don't know what, but it seems like it could be important 😂) I go through it every so often and see if I can match things up, and it's kind of fun! I also have a place to look for the piece of something when I notice that a part is missing off something. I keep dead batteries in a large plastic jar right inside the garage door and take them to a waste round-up when it comes to my area. I keep a small tin by the back door and put them in there and take them to the garage when I'm going out there. I think its funny that we all have a problem with too many kitchen accessories, but the one exception is oven mitts! We usually only have one, and we use it till it's gross and we need to be told it's ok to buy a new one! 😂
I am sure I can find 25 things to declutter even though I have trimmed my belongings down amazingly over the past few years. I began when I came back from a 3 month caravan holiday and was appalled at all my stuff and how much of my time I had to spend maintaining all that stuff. My father passed away eleven years ago and, because we live on the property, we haven't bothered much with the junk in his big shed. My husband always thought it might be useful. Now in our older age, I have convinced him that we need to go through the mess to save leaving it for others. What a job!! We got rid of far more than 25 things yesterday and have hardly made a dent! But we will continue...
This is a great list! Thank you for joining in and creating it. I have done most of the things on your list and it really does make a big difference mentally as well as to your physical space.
I did a huge decluttering at the end of November. 2024 was a very stressful (but also succesful) year for me. I finished my thesis while working part time, but I couldn't get to decluttering because I had to focus on my career goals (normally I do a decluttering round every 3-4 months). At the end of the year I couldn't be stopped. I got rid of the trash, sold stuff at an indoor flea maket and listed everything that was left online. I thought I might be a bit late to the game just before Christmas, but boy did I get a lot of messages! I think I have eight or nine things left (started at 60 items). It's a great feeling to have a head start on your goals even before the new year begins. This year, I want to declutter some body weight (I gained a few pounds because of all the stress last year) and a few bad habits. I need to go through paper as well. I wanted to focus on the sellable stuff first, as theat can take some time before potential buyers appear.
I was listening to this and found myself just discarding stuff from my closet. I have yards of textile from my trip in West Africa from 10 years ago and you're right I actually don't need it anymore and it's just taking a lot of space.
I mucked out the kitchen junk drawer while listening to your video. It felt so good to empty it out and only put back in what was useful (and relocate the "stashed" bits and bobs that are supposed to be somewhere else)
A very sweet family I tutored for got me a cookbook and a pair of oven mitts when I got married. They are quilted on the inside, but a gorgeous, deep purple grippy silicone on the outside. We've been married seven and half years and they still look and feel brand new. They even fit my husband who is a ginormous dude. They also make great trivets once we've gotten what ever it is out of the oven too. My advice is to consider investing in something that will wear a bit better as well as decluttering the old and gross. Now, I'm not saying $$$ equals quality, I'm just saying if a few more dollars means it'll stand up to wear and tear better, consider that when purchasing. I love hitting places like the $1.25 Store so I don't feel so bad if something breaks or needs to be replaced, but at the same time, investing a bit more in something to get years of wear instead of months can be good as well. I think you just have to balance your priorities of budget, quality, waste (single-use), etc. - sometimes you just can't afford something at the moment and sometimes you can get really decent quality for cheap. I love my Dollar Store dishes. You'd never know that's where I got them and they're just as pretty and heavy duty as the more expensive ones that came in a set from Target. I swear, I'm not trying to plug the $1.25 store, I'm just saying you might be surprised what you can find. Thrifting is also super awesome as well, just be aware of which ones are for profit and which ones are actually for legit charities. For me, it makes it a lot easier to let go of something when it wasn't super expensive.
I have lost a lot of weight, so I am very carefully picking out pieces that will work as a classic for work/ conferences. Most of the items I have decluttered..but great reminders ❤❤❤
All ideas have been thought of, we are motivated by others. The important thing is that we have the tools we need to make our lifestyle the perfect fit for ourselves. Thank you for shring and Happy New Year!
Thanks for your channel, Elin! Watching it and hearing your voice is what made me finally confident enough to try therapy two years ago. 🤣 It was helpful because I knew better what to expect somehow after watching your videos. I’ve had 3 different therapists now that have all been handy for those different seasons in life.
Hi Elin. Hope you are enjoying motherhood. We would all love to see your Christmas decor and Christmas tree in your lovely home. You always have such great taste ! Amanda x
This video really spoke to me! I’ve been going through my stuff and before I even listened to the video today. I had already cluttered my silverware drawer, and was thinking the same things she was saying! There were several other things that really spoke to me as well!
Elin you gave me a chuckle when the smelly shoes came up 😂. I recently been putting away my and my husband’s shoes in temporary storage to make room for our boots for winter in our front closet. This is a perfect time to go through them and throw the ones that can go in washer( fabric runners) in washing machine and wipe down your leather ones. Then get rid off the ones we haven’t been wearing because they are uncomfortable or not desirable or just too worn out.
❤ yes learning to know myself better is a key part of this minimalist venture for me. Finding out what I prioritise & what stuff is actually me. Curating & refining to the needs of my family & I. 😊
Seasonal greetings Elin from the UK. Your timely video came just as i was thinking about whether to declutter old tea-towels / aprons and ones that were shabby or ones that just didn't do it or me any more. So sfter watching i went for it and now have another clear basket for the new year.Thank you 🎄
@deelehey2827 😂 was gonna say.. saving them to wear with that one pair of boots we only wear once or twice a year.. that we won't ever let go of.. because they're too awesome.. even when they're sitting in the closet.. or on a shelf on display.. they're "our boots" 😅 and they need the right pants.. and maybe that oversized black sweater
Kids will find ways of losing a mitten or a sock, and it is mind-bending. So we stopped buying nice gloves (or hid them until sledding time) and it saved us parents from being mad that they lost a nice glove (they dont know the cost, and now I know that its kids jobs to make us chill and smell the coffee). I have eliminated my wardrobe to necessities, I’m going on a cruise next year so have bought some new clothes for that I’m up to 104 clothing items including underwear and shoes
I am struggling through Christmas decor. My grandmother who was really like my mother passed away Sept 2023 and her Birthday was Christmas Day. She loved Christmas. She had tons of decorations she had collected throughout the years. I have these special trinkets of hers that I do like but I don't necessarily have space for it but Ive already done 2 large declutters but I still have a lot more stuff but I am nowhere near ready to get rid of the stuff I have left. I'm thinking what I am going to do is focus on the rest of the stuff in my house and go back to it next year or the year after. I still have a significant amount of other stuff I have to go through so maybe by the time I'm done doing all this stuff I'll be in a better head space to make those decisions a year or 2 years from now.
I think the only thing i focus on storage just emergency food n water ( for any apocalypse ) and some emergency food n water ( when i am short in money ) ahahaha.. Other things i dont really own a lot.. i have enuf pillow like 2 per person, i have 4 bed sheet for 2 mattress, i only have one in each kitchen utensil pot n pans, i only have 6 pair of fork n spoon, i only have 4 nice plates ( if guest came ) , few pyrex that used to bake n serve food on the table hehehe, i own few tupperware but i get rid of those plastic thinwall plates bowl boxes, i own very minimum clothes ( just 2 luggage if i fit it ins ). So yea i am glad i let go all the stress in my house
My problem is white t-shirts and tops. I just cannot find a white top that I love. Because they’re white they’re often see through or not thick enough.
I just saw a video about this. They said that if you are getting a white shirt especially ordering white shirts online look to see if you can see the seam area along the bottom. If the bottom of the shirt looks like a different shade of white than the rest of the shirt, it is probably see through. Hope that helps.
I have started to wear the plain white camisoles under the white shirts (over the bra), and i feel like it looks better as well. I got that look from White House Black Market. I was good and bought only one thing that day, one of my best clothing purchases and best stolen idea…
There is a device called Elgato where you can digitize your home VHS tapes to your laptop. It is super easy to do at home, but having a VCR is crucial to do this too. : ) Now that I have digitized all my VHS tapes I don't know how to dispose them properly. I still have like 60 of them in a box :/
skinny jeans.. well thats the only jeans that look good on me so i only have skinny jeans XD (iam 1.90m (or 6.3f?) tall i need to exploit those legs ) and being dutch, i dont care about trends or ''whats in right now' we are to stubborn to listen to trends or what other people think XD
We all need to stop listening to people who tell us what is in style. They are just selling you stuff. Be your own style. That is freedom.
Yeah, I can get with everything but this. We shouldn't subscribe to one specific style or aesthetic if we don't want to. Trends will always cycle back around. I have both skinny jeans and straight leg jean options because it depends on the outfit honestly
Right? That's exactly what I thought. I was quite shocked that she mentioned what's "in" a couple of times.

Woke up at 11:20 made my coffee and instantly decluttered some to go containers - thanks Elin 😊
I'm definitely at the maintenance level of minimizing. I miss those big declutters.

All clothes I own fit and are in good repair, a lot is new
I literally burned my hands through an old oven mitt while baking today, that tip couldn’t have been better timed!
Oh gosh! Hope you’re okay!!
HA!! The "backup" skinny jeans!! Yep, I have those.
They tuck into boots nicely

I decluttered my nail polish. Hoorah!!!
I’ll be decluttering jewelry, scarves, and belts.
You’ve been in my kitchen!!?? 😳 old oven mitts lol 😂
Excellent tips, Elin. I always enjoy your videos. - Lisa from Ontario, Canada
Towels, bath, swim, rags 🎉
Thank you ❤
The company I work for is always gifting us items. I usually just put it back on the cart when no one is watching. I had downsized to having only two mugs at home so I gave myself permission to keep the mug. lol
I've downsized to 10 per season. I am a faithful declutterer but love my mugs. ☕
I will be sorting out my Christmas decor in early January as I store away what I used this year.
Really helpful suggestions. Thank you so much. 😊
I’ve spent my life decluttering to some extent. We start the way our family does then almost figure it out for ourselves. I have many a hobby. I love cleaning up after a project. I just keep thinking at least my space is not messy as my University studio was. I never leave any easy to throw away items out, trash etc.
They at least go right away.
I like to play your videos and tackle a spot in this multi room, maybe I’ll see the end.👍🏻🇨🇦
Elin, this is great advice! Thank you for pointing out these areas to declutter. It's been hard for me in the past to declutter certain items; however, as of late, I'm getting much better at it. My goal in the new year is to build on my new-found decluttering muscles. Wish me luck!
Good luck! You got this. 💪
Many of us have been there. It gets much easier over time. Soon you will be thinking 'why did I hang onto this for so long?'
Thank you Elin. I love your channel!

Simplifying shoes is a great space saving strategy
OMG, the oven mitt!! So guilty. 😆😆😆
I just bought new ones. Used them twice and they already have a big stain I can´t get out. 😅

I still have a significant amount of other stuff I have to go through so maybe by the time I'm done doing all this stuff I'll be in a better head space to make those decisions a year or 2 years from now.
Subscribed. Great list! Thank you.
I just decluttered vases.
For smelly shoes, use baking soda. For sneakers, wash them, then air dry.
Love this tip!
Great video thank you
I had two color analysis, and I’m a winter. Even as I have gotten older I wear a lot of black, so this suggestion I’ll skip but the others are great.
Makes sense! :)
Time to declutter my broom! It’s my gross item to get rid of.
That and the fact that white is so hard to keep clean is why I've given up on white anything
totally relate to this!
depending on the fit of course, you could try shopping the men's section! Their material is usually not see-through in my experience
I have started to wear the plain white camisoles under the white shirts (over the bra), and i feel like it looks better as well. I got that look from White House Black Market. I was good and bought only one thing that day, one of my best clothing purchases and best stolen idea…
Thank you ❤
Ty😊
You can never have too many black tops! (My entire wardrobe is black)
I have elegant dresses for my cruise they will go after that including the suitcases
Ok. Skinny jeans, i have lots. 🗑 🚮 😂 thank you.
I am going to (try to) declutter ‘a negative body image’ and ‘being to harsh on myself’. And yes, the skinny jeans has to go!!😅
love it! :)
Good advice
Wait what.. the black repetitive sweater thing.. is a thing!?! 😂 it's not just me 😅
😂
Today I converted a pair of skinny jeans in to shorts. They look great.
I cut them with scissors, not going to even bother hemming them.
LOVE it!!
Do not get rid of beauty product samples. Take them with you on trips and save space and weight instead of carrying all the bottles.
AKA Kenneth Bailey 😊😊😊

Toys are a hard one. My toddler has the memory of an elephant and will ask for things I kept away months ago. 🫣
