All my great aunts swore to the powers of the soda added to the tea for clarity and taste. It’s like the trick of a dash of salt on your coffee grinds before you start your machine.
A big Roger That on the salt in coffee. If you're resistant, just put some on the tip of your finger and add that. Tiny amount. Pretty soon I think it helps you enjoy any coffee, any where. Rather than being picky, I just compare the different tastes to what I enjoy at home. I just learned that a couple or three small drops of water keep the grounds from sticking in the grinder. (A problem with the little hand held Braun-type electric). Now that I'm beginning to enjoy tea, I can't wait to try the baking soda! I can see how that might prevent the caffeine and the tannic acid from forming that cloudy precipitate. Dang, the last time I tried to make iced tea with no proper Southern instruction it ended looking like muddy chocolate milk... I kept expecting a frog to jump out. I appreciate all the comments, funny or informative. Cheers!
Literally every southern family does it differently from the next. I learned to place 3 bags in a medium sized bowl of water and microwave then put 3 quarts of water in a pitcher and mix it all together with a lot of sugar. Im sure everyone would agree that nothing beats sweet tea from mcdonalds though.
I've noticed that when you add something acidic to tea, it loses some of it's beautiful color. By adding Baking Soda, I believe you are making the water more alkaline, which makes the color of the tea more beautiful. I just learned this from your video. Thanks.
Ok, that's what I'm talkin' about. This is the Southern Sweet Tea I remember. I have been trying to duplicate this for years. Ok, decades. I'm having a glass right now. Thanks a bunch!!!
we steep tea with a pinch of salt. we make a lemonade or limeade with sugar (I use stevia) then add steeped tea to that. Special Note: when preparing lemonade/limeade add sweetener first and mix well then squeeze lemon / lime.
i drank this tea in Monroe La, a few weeks ago and AM looking for it in Neb, the most wonderful tea I have tasted !!! No actual sugar ,wonderful flavor and very southern. REMINDS ME OF WHEN I WAS A GIRL LIVING IN THE SOUTH ON A HOT AFTERNOON, SITTING UNDER A SHADE TREE AND ENJOYING THE COOLNESS OF FLAVOR
I'm from the south and I must agree that sweetness is subjective. We have always used the Kool-Aid guidelines. It recommends 1 cup of sugar per 2 quarts, so for a gallon that would be 2 cups of sugar. I have been known to use as many as 3 cups of sugar especially when making really strong tea and using a few extra tea bags. Also, Ice dilutes the flavor and sweetness, so we compensate for that. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and their own tastes. Enjoy; however you like your tea! :-)
First off, if you steep the tea bags in the water OFF the stove top as the recipe suggests, then there is ZERO chance the tags fall onto the burner and ignite. We don't need to take precautions for something that, in this case, cannot possibly happen. Second off, I have always heard that southern sweet tea is traditionally served at room temperature with ice on the side. I guess I was wrong about this.
Just follow the instructions. 1st I either use 2 160z bottled water or with the same 1 gallon pitcher use the 1 quarts measurements, into an electric or stove Kettle, add the 1 gallon tea bag, boil for 3 to 5 minutes, then pour it into the 1 gallon empty pitcher, 2 cups of sugar and 2 single serve packets of True Lemon, stir and put inside fridge. Enjoy everyday.
We have ice tea in the UK but we don't use as much sugar so it tastes more like tea than sugar sometimes, we make Ice tea with soaked dried fruit, that's the best.
Lipton tea bags are one of the best to make sweet tea because they tend to be stronger x I can't use some of the cheaper brands for sweet tea because they don't work as good
i just tried this recipe and i love it!!! ive always been a green tea fanatic but ive recently been into sweet tea , this is not too much sugar i mean its called sweet tea for a reason :) i cant stand it when some sweet tea tastes salt like or bitter, i dont know exactly how to describe it but, i have a sweet tooth so theres no such thing as too much sugar . thank you (:
Been a Minnesotan my entire life. While I've had sweet tea, on a grueling hot summer day I definitely want ice cold PLAIN unsweetened sun tea on ice. Sweet tea is basically desert on ice lol
I like how it took two people to do one person's job every step of the way. Did anyone else notice how she didn't stir that lemon into her tea and just took a big sip of lemon juice off the top at the end?
Now that is how you introduce the tea bags to the hot water. There are a lot of videos showing tea bags in the cold water and bring to a boil. That makes bitter tea. Good Job Ladies.
2 - 2 1/2 cups of sugar to the gallon. Add sugar to container. Bring kettle to boil and throw in tea bags, take off heat. Luzianne is the best. Let steep. Pour in tea from kettle in container and mix. Continue adding cold water to kettle and tea bags and pour in container until full. Mix. Chill and enjoy.
@AdjudicatorSC2 did you top off with water at the end? they put 1.5 cups in 4 Liters, which is less than you did if you didn't top off with extra water.
Ideal extraction time for tea is 4 minutes, much longer than that it starts to taste like burnt mate. Too bitter and flat! Also, tea needs no sugar, just a sip of milk after removing the tea bag
Almost the correct recipe-but not quite. You should fill your pot with more water, throw in the six tea bags and bring it to a boil. The pinch of baking soda goes in just as it comes to a boil. It will foam up, so leave a bit of room in the pot if you use the baking soda. After the tea comes to a boil put the lid on and remove from heat. Let it sit and “steep” for a loooooong time. I leave my tea out overnight. Southern Tea should be strong enough to kick. Put 2 cups of sugar in a gallon jug or pitcher. (3/4 cup of sugar means it’s the end of the month and you’re having to stretch the groceries till payday.) Stir in the brewed tea to dissolve the sugar. Add water to fill the jug. Cool in the refrigerator or serve with ice. Add lemon if you want. But personally, I don’t know of any real Southern old-timer who would. Save the lemons for lemonade.
DONT BOIL YOUR TEA BAGS IN THE POT. you are actually bruising the tea leaves, and it's going to give an odd and weird flavor to your tea. just boil your water, and THEN put the tea bags in your already boiled water and let it seep to your desired strength.
OMG a cup and a half of sugar? 2/3's of a cup of sugar is perfect for one gallon of iced tea and you can make the base in a Mr. Coffee, add the sugar while the tea is hot, and then when the tea cools down add the rest of the water for the gallon(use an empty plastic water jug) ....easy as pie and your teeth won't hurt drinking it......and yes I'm a southerner .....
Soooooooooo I've been doing Iced tea wrong all these past 40 years😢. Who knew😮 a pinch of baking soda would make a world of difference. 😂 Side note: My sister and I were traveling with my parents across country and we made a HUGE MISTAKE when asked if we wanted regular iced tea and we said yes. Oh no, it wasn't pretty....the sugar in the tea 🤯 blew that tea right out of our mouths and into our napkin. You see, were from the south and had never experienced tea with sugar. We grew up with iced tea and a lemon tree in SoCal. I'm sure when we asked for PLAIN TEA with lots of lemon we provided the ENTIRE restaurant with a laugh. My twin sister and I have improved our pallets and enjoy this delightful version of iced tea...but, I can't lie...the majority of the time it's still plain tea with 🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋 Thanks for the great tip and a perfect tea.❤❤❤❤
Thats 2, maybe 2 and a half us quarts at most lol. Anyway its similar to how I do it. Though I like to flavor my pot by adding bag or 2 of cup sized peach or mint herbal tea in with the black tea bags and instead of cutting with cold water I just use a bunch of ice. That way its cold and ready to drink instantly after most of the ice melts.
palladini971, I do in fact know that Ice is frozen water. I am simply saying I use more sugar because I use a LOT of ice because I like ice and I like REALLY cold drinks. I also tend to let the ice melt into the tea, which as you so eloquently implied, is the same as adding water.... but it's colder. I use the extra sugar so that when the ice melts into water and dilutes the tea, it is still sweet. It's just the way I like to do it :-) I am currently detoxing from sugar, so my sweet tea will never be the same again :-(
Less sugar is much better. The recipe I use uses 1 cup (I tend to only use 3/4 cup) to 6 cups hot water.........boil, add tea bags........then another 6 cups of cold water after.
I would never tell a Southerner how to make Sweet Tea but a good tip is to stir in your sugar while the water is still boiling hot. That way it will dissolve properly.
