Just came back after my 8 Days holiday in Taiwan. Visited quite a number of night markets, including Shilin. You need to try the grilled jumbo size big fat Taiwanese sausage there. They sell it by the weight and cut it into bite-size pieces for you. You can even buy the vacuumed-packed uncooked sausages or semi-cooked ones home. Another good eat at Shilin is the XXL crispy fried chicken, definitely much much better than the over-rated J&G fried chicken续光香香鸡 at XiMengDing. Not huge fans of blue cheese either, but we both actually enjoy vegemite!! I hate Durian! But Alan loves it! I would be interested to try the frozen version though., Thanks so much for watching, it means a lot that you have enjoyed the video! :D
One ingredient that makes braised pork rice and soup dumplings so delicious yet few people mentioned is the pork. We have very high quality and locally raised, fresh pork here in Taiwan. 😊
Another great video! For stinky tofu I would recommend you to dip it in the garlic soy sauce then dip in the mild hot sauce and eat it with some Taiwanese pickled lettuce (kimchi) for first timers. Would definitely recommend trying a smaller bite as well.

I don’t think it tastes as bad as it smells but I also don’t get the point of it haha. Like the tofu taste isn’t bad but the aftertaste lingers and tastes like how it smells. Next time you have fresh tomatoes, cut one up and sprinkle some sugar over it! It's actually really delicious, like "drink all the leftover juice" delicious!
When thinking of stinky tofu, think "a dog's bark is worse than it's bite". The "stinky" aspect is more mental than fact. Fried and with the right sauce, it's actually pretty good, a slight sweetness, and only with an almost imperceptible smell. Steamed stinky tofu has a sour taste with only a slight smell. Go with the fried version. The facial expressions were hilarious.
I remember my night market experience in Taiwan like it was yesterday. Full of smells and surprises. Stinky tofu was probably 50% of them 🤣 我對台灣夜市的經歷記憶猶新。
Candied tomato is worth a try. It often comes with a piece of pickled plum. a pickled plum pairs with a tomato. So it is candy tomato with the sour flavor from pickled plum. 🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅 Shop matters, there are good stinky tofu shops and mehhh stinky tofu shops. So find one with good review would be a good choice to make. 😄 They are all stinky though. Just there are more delicious shops and not so delicious shops to the locals. Like any other foods. A thin crispy layer of crust, just the right amount of scent, and delicious sauce injected into every piece of tofu, and crunchy pickles on the side. That is a good stinky tofu set.
You guys are definitely brave to try the stinky tofu!! I just wanted to point out that, based on the video, I think you guys got the plain stinky tofu? I would suggest eating the fried stinky tofu with Taiwanese kimchi and hot sauce on it. That will definitely help take the edge off. I would also recommend the steamed stinky tofu from Acheng Goose in Taipei or 江豪記 in Kaohsiung with minced pork on it. Please let me know if you get to try those! Would love to hear your thoughts.
Yes, I do think we had it pretty much plain! It had some sauce, but not a lot. Next time we visit we will have to take your advice on where to try it!! Thank you!! :D
The reaction of foreign youtubers eating stinky tofu is hilarious. It's nowhere near as bad as it is ever made out to be and tastes great. Yeah it stinks, but so do things like blue cheese and that is mega too.
@@IfWeGoTo been here 13 years and ate it the whole time here. Tastes nothing like it smells for me, but I understand everyone has a different taste. I love it. If you really want to try something truly minging eat bitter melon here then you will know something truly rank.
Whoever told you stinky tofu is the best thing ever was messing with you or trying to convince you. I grew up on it and I'm a fan, but it's just FINE. I don't know anyone whose life would be devoid of all meaning and joy if they could never have stinky tofu again. It's just crunchy and savory - you don't even taste the funk if you're used to it.
A tomato is added at the bottom because it’s firmer than strawberry so it acts as the anchor to prevent strawberries from sliding down the skewer, so they said. Well, fermented tofu is not for everybody, but I guess it’s ingrained in most Taiwanese people’s DNA so it’s not stinky to me at all. But to be fair, I don”t understand the popularity of Japanese nattos, southeast Asian durians, and the blue cheese in the West either😂.
Ahh thank you! And it must be a genetic or acquired thing!! Haven't tried Natto yet, hated Durian (Alan loved it though!!), and blue cheese... meh, it can be OK in some dishes, but generally don't like it!
Most people don't know that stinky tofu is actually a relatively recent invention from 1987 by a Taiwanese street food vendor named Kai Wan-Xiao, he and a bunch of other vendors got really drunk one night and thought it would be hilarious to prank foreign travelers so they created the foulest, most offensive tofu dish they could come up with and launched a nationwide grassroots campaign to get the whole country in on the joke so everyone would pretend to actually like it and silly foreigners would take the bait. (Ok I made that all up, put Kai Wan-Xiao into Google Translate 😂) Seriously though, as a Taiwanese-American I have tried so hard to like stinky tofu so I can do right by my Taiwanese heritage, but I just can't do it. I'm usually so receptive to weird foods and I've eaten a lot of unusual stuff (snake, shark, gator, chicken feet, live shrimp, and I LOVE century eggs) but I just cannot get past the overpowering awfulness of stinky tofu. Maybe one day...
Hahahaha - if you told me that, I would have believed it!! I see what you did there.. Kai Wan-Xiao 😂 Learning a little more Chinese every day! Hahaha hey I give you props for trying it! I (Brandi) have Filipino heritage.. so the Philippines was the first place I ever went... and told my self, "Oh yes, I am *definitely* going to try balut!!". After seeing it I could NOT! lol. Maybe now that I have traveled quite a bit more I could.. but it was too intimidating. I have heard century eggs are pretty gnarly!! What was that like?? Idk.. maybe stinky tofu just is not meant to be enjoyed by everyone. lol
@@IfWeGoTo Oh boy balut...thats on my list of things to try but that's another one that scares me! Century eggs are actually delicious, a little sulfuric but very savory and umami. If you can get past the appearance and texture you might like them! But I totally get why most people don't...they look terrifying lol.
Hahaha there are quite a few interesting foods out in the world!! In Thailand we ate scorpion and live shrimp.. so I just wonder if I could stomach it now! What is the texture of the egg like??
Ahahaha your reactions to the stinky tofu were so funny. Seems like hit or miss. I was born without a sense of smell so I have no idea and will probably never know what you guys are sensing. I wonder if you guys ate the right ones or if it would be any different eaten in instead of take out
Awesome video! What you wouldn't sacrifice for your art. Stinky tofu strikes again. Perhaps next time try the tofu with some soy garlic sauce and chili sauce. Depending on its potency(pungency), eating the tofu bare can be daunting, especially for 1st time try. Next stop, century old egg 皮蛋. Please don't eat that by itself. Try century old egg with tofu, pork floss and soy sauce glaze
Thank you!! If we give stinky tofu another go - we will definitely try it with toppings as you recommended!! Century egg... I don't know if we're brave enough yet!! hahaha
I think you guys picked a particularly subpar stinky tofu stand. Usually they come in larger pieces with a hole in the middle which you stuff kimchi, soy sauce and garlic inside. Although I can totally imagine for most visitors no stinky tofu would be palatable.
Ohh that is too bad we did not pick a good one... well if we are every brave enough to try it again we will definitely look for a better one or seek local advice! hahaha.
Stinky tofu is not for beginners😂. Either you hate it or love it. There is no in between. Some hate it so much at first but as they grow order they can handle that fermented smell
it's actually juz fermented vegetable & d ones u had is notin coz it's still white. if u go search a bit into d farming of it u will see that d water is grey in color ^~^ They also have it fried with durian filling & serve with a side(century egg) #SmellyBeancurd4Life
Ha ha, It's so interesting you said " I'll still kiss you later." BTW, I don't have had stinky tofu until I am 30, I believe it's not the tranditional Taiwanese food, my 84-years-old dad never has it, and refuses to try it.😂😂😂
You must eat together with the sour lettuce that included. It's will reduce the stinky smell and it's taste better. At least you must try several times, After several tried, you will love it

😂😂😂 stinky tofu definitely is one of your unforgettable memories
Certainly! It will not be forgotten!! hahaha
Next time you have fresh tomatoes, cut one up and sprinkle some sugar over it! It's actually really delicious, like "drink all the leftover juice" delicious!
Woah I would not have thought of that combination! Maybe one day we’ll be brave enough to try it! 😂
It's actually pretty popular in South Korea!
Ohh would love to go there and try to foods too!!
I think we may need to give it another chance, but head to a proper spot for it!!
I love it with pickled vegetables.
Hahaha more for you!!
I remember my night market experience in Taiwan like it was yesterday. Full of smells and surprises. Stinky tofu was probably 50% of them 🤣
Oh yes… it had nooo shortage of those! Stinky tofu definitely caught us by surprise, our friends had us CONVINCED it was delicious!
Did you enjoy it!?
Hahaha😂. U guys are so funny
Thank you!! 😂
Candied tomato is worth a try. It often comes with a piece of pickled plum. a pickled plum pairs with a tomato. So it is candy tomato with the sour flavor from pickled plum. 🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅
Shop matters, there are good stinky tofu shops and mehhh stinky tofu shops.
Ohh I guess next time we will need to try that!
Next time we will have to do some research before we take on stinky tofu! lol
Thank you!! :D
you are braver than you believe.
Support you. 🎉🎉
Hahaha, Thank you!! And thank you for the support!! :D
The reaction of foreign youtubers eating stinky tofu is hilarious. It's nowhere near as bad as it is ever made out to be and tastes great. Yeah it stinks, but so do things like blue cheese and that is mega too.
Idk man.. we’ve tried a LOT of food… and stinky tofu was not it for us!! 😂 it must be acquired or genetic or something!
It tastes as bad as it smells, I've tried it on and off for over ten years and I completely disagree with you
Hahaha it does taste much like the smell!! I would give it one more chance with toppings, but I just don't know if it will grow on us!
@@IfWeGoTo been here 13 years and ate it the whole time here. Tastes nothing like it smells for me, but I understand everyone has a different taste. I love it. If you really want to try something truly minging eat bitter melon here then you will know something truly rank.
We are going to taipei in Dec,Which district do you recommend to stay? Thanks
Hi!! I think I would try to pick a central district for your visit - one that has easy access to multiple train lines, like Xinyi or Zhongzheng :)
@@IfWeGoTo Thanks we chose Zhongshan which is central 🙂
Whoever told you stinky tofu is the best thing ever was messing with you or trying to convince you. I grew up on it and I'm a fan, but it's just FINE. I don't know anyone whose life would be devoid of all meaning and joy if they could never have stinky tofu again. It's just crunchy and savory - you don't even taste the funk if you're used to it.
Hahaha we definitely think it may be some elaborate joke!! More for the people who like it I guess!
🤣 when I first read the title I thought it said “stinky toe”
Note to self: 3rd time is not a charm!!!
Hahaha it might as well have been!!
I don't know if our opinions will change!! hahaha. How have you been???
15:07 omg should've puta pic of old Mitch up 😂😂
Missed opportunity for sure lol
Most people don't know that stinky tofu is actually a relatively recent invention from 1987 by a Taiwanese street food vendor named Kai Wan-Xiao, he and a bunch of other vendors got really drunk one night and thought it would be hilarious to prank foreign travelers so they created the foulest, most offensive tofu dish they could come up with and launched a nationwide grassroots campaign to get the whole country in on the joke so everyone would pretend to actually like it and silly foreigners would take the bait.
(Ok I made that all up, put Kai Wan-Xiao into Google Translate 😂)
Seriously though, as a Taiwanese-American I have tried so hard to like stinky tofu so I can do right by my Taiwanese heritage, but I just can't do it.
Kai Wan-Xiao 😂
Learning a little more Chinese every day!
Got to eat with the sweet and sour cabbage . Or spicy sauces.
If we can muster up the strength to take on stinky tofu again, we will be sure to take your advice!! 😅
Ahahaha your reactions to the stinky tofu were so funny. Seems like hit or miss. I was born without a sense of smell so I have no idea and will probably never know what you guys are sensing.
I wonder if you guys ate the right ones or if it would be any different eaten in instead of take out
I mea the texture was good! Maybe you would still enjoy that??
We'll have to try it again one day.. will need a local to show us a good spot!
I don't know if we're brave enough yet!! hahaha
Pls visit 基隆keelung . We have the most famous local street food
We did not make it there this time, but would love to visit on our next trip to Taiwan! :D
Some hate it so much at first but as they grow order they can handle that fermented smell
it's actually juz fermented vegetable & d ones u had is notin coz it's still white.
if u go search a bit into d farming of it u will see that d water is grey in color ^~^
They also have it fried with durian filling & serve with a side(century egg)
#SmellyBeancurd4Life
Oh that is good to know, next time we will have to go to a better spot… maybe 🤣
Durian filling and century egg would be interesting to try!!!
Ha ha, It's so interesting you said " I'll still kiss you later."
BTW, I don't have had stinky tofu until I am 30, I believe it's not the tranditional Taiwanese food, my 84-years-old dad never has it, and refuses to try it.😂😂😂
Hahaha, true love right...
It is a very intense experience, I do not blame your dad!
16:46 ahaha another subway joke ;)
Oh Alan and his subway jokes..
You must eat together with the sour lettuce that included. It's will reduce the stinky smell and it's taste better. At least you must try several times, After several tried, you will love it
Thank you for the tips!!
Stinky tofu, it's so bad, it's so GOOD!
Hahaha more for you!
Anxiously waiting to see you guys try STINKY TOFU 🤭 🤣 😆 🤮
Not bad, you guys actually ate it & didn't spit it out like all TH-camrs I've seen try it 🤣 😆 👏 😁 🤟
Hahaha, we had to give it a genuine try! Our friends love it!
@@IfWeGoTo Impressed! 👋😁👍
You guys actually ate it instead of spitting it out like most if not all TH-camrs that try it & your Husband actually ate 3 or 4 🤔😳🤣🤭
I think he is secretly in love with the Stinky Tofu! Why else would he try them so many times?
Hahahahah that IS a good point!! 😂
You’re supposed to eat it with the kimchi 😂
Hahaha next time we will need to try that… if we can muster up the strength! 😂
Five times is a full treatment!
I guess that means we'll have to give it another try!
You guys should try KFC or McDonald's in Asia. I think they're way better than the States
Ohh that's an idea! I think it would be interesting to try some of the regional specials!
Did you guys bing chilling? Lol
Bing chilling???
So beautiful stay safe
Thank you friend! You do the same!!
@@IfWeGoTo your welcome friend thank you
Usually they serve the stinky tofu with Taiwanese kimchi, try eating it together, should help with the overall taste.
Maybe we’ll have to give it a go another time 😂
@IfWeGoTo you guys should, if it still doesnt taste better, go with the saying what doesnt kill you, makes you stronger 😁
They say to try everything twice right? hahaha
It is made by fermented vegetable, not the shrimp something.
Oh got it!! Thank you!!
They should outlaw stinky tofu at open market.
Hahaha I may be in agreement of this 😂
Wow yummy yummy
More for you! 😆
Genuine question, Does anyone know if it's safe to visit Taiwan right now due the conflict with China?
Hi, we felt safe while visiting. As visitors you could feel some of the tensions are present, but it felt very normal.
Great video! I really couldn't get myself to eat the stinky tofu. The smell was just so awful, and after watching this video, I'm glad I did not try it, haha.
Hahaha, it was an experience to say the least - and perhaps one we could have done without! Hope you enjoyed your trip even though stinky tofu was a no go! lol
