Ginger Snaps was one of my favorite films growing up. This song takes me back to a much simpler time in my life when me and my sister used to watch it on a tiny portable DVD player. We always played the credits so we could listen to this wonderful song.
First day on vacation in LA I went to the Whiskey to watch Joydrop. Stood next to Gwen Stefani who also came to the show and I tried to play it cool...like this happens every day to me. An experience i never had in my hometown of Maryland. After that trip I packed as much as I could in my little Honda Civic and drove cross country with no job, no place to live, no plan. That was 1999 and I never looked back. This song has a lot of meaning for me.
I haven't heard this song in forever and I woke up thinking about it today for some reason. It brings back so many memories from 1999. Someone at my school was passing out mix CDs and I got 1, this song was on it, I fell in love with it and listened to it over and over. Love the vocals, the guitars, the bitter lyrics. Everything about this song is awesome.
The 90s had so many great female fronted bands. These guys, Skunk Anansie, Hole, L7, Hepburn, Elastica, I could go on. All great performers and songwriters.
@@blacksunshine7485 Thanks. I know The Distillers but I haven't listened to them much. I mostly listen to punk-pop rock like Avril Lavigne, Skye Sweetnam, Fefe Dobson and Paramore. For bands, I enjoy Halo Friendlies and Lillix. Now I'm looking for female pop punk and pop rock artists from the late 1990s. Could you recommend me some?
@ReubenBroery Yeah definitely listen to The Distillers. Other female fronted bands i listened to from the 90s were Sleeper, Republica, Echobelly and Kenickie but they're Britpop really. That was the era I started listening to music. Some rock or alternative female fronted bands were No Doubt, Bikini Kill, Varuca Salt, The Donnas, Jack Off Jill, Lunachicks, Bif Naked. There are metal bands, Kittie, Nightwish, Arch Enemy, Lacuna Coil.. If you're a Paramore fan I'd definitely recommend Tsunami Bomb. Their album 'The Ultimate Escape' is a great album and I'm sure they heavily influenced Paramore vocally and musically because you can hear the clear similarities and influence alot in early Paramore. Listen to 'Say It If You Mean It' and 'The Simple Truth' by Tsunami Bomb to hear that influence they had. Also Stand Atlantic are a pretty good pop punk/rock band but they are more recent. They're really fun and Paramore-ish. Listen to their track 'Hate Me (Sometimes)'.
To this day I’m still angry and mystified that this brilliant band never made it. First discovered Joydrop on MuchMusic as a teenager 20 years ago and never forgot that wonderfully striking singer and beautiful, haunting voice.
You’re about to make me cry. I miss much music. Back in the day it was so good and there are so many songs I can’t partially remember in my head but will probably never find again.
Joydrop had a poor marketing guy at their helm. They needed a guy like Fred Durst on board, who was a key asset for the band Staind and helped them become quite popular.
I’ll never forget seeing this band play in Pittsburgh 20 years ago. They signed my CD case and I rubbed the drummers head, lol. It was a memorable night, one I can never forget. Voodoo babies opened for them and I remember smoking a joint in the van after the show with the band. Good times.
The drummer is my uncle !! (Moms brother) haha He still makes music under the name Leh-Lo. He wrote a lot of their songs and this song is one that he wrote. It’s our families favorite song by them
My Uber rider recommended this group after I was rocking out to the Sneaker Pimps. That’s one perk of this gig- I’ve been introduced to dozens of artists I’ve never heard. This is fu*kin’ sweet. ✊🏼
I made a list of things superficial for my youngen to listen to. Yes, i know what im doing. Completely meant to do it on purpose... Poor kids going through her awkward yrs
I had totally forgotten this song until I saw something that said the words "beautiful like me", and the name of this tune immediately kicked in. Haven't heard this in ages, even though I liked it when it came out.
Glad so many other folks remember this song from their lives in the late 90s too!! I swear, in real life, no one seems to remember this song despite the fact that it was all over my local top 40 station.
I lost my CD. Over 20 years ago. I remember this song and Dogstar Radio. They were ahead of their time. If they came out as a new group today - I think all of the Billie Eilish fans would give them a listen.
Joydrop may be one of the most underrated bands ever. They must have had a bad marketing director. If Joydrop had Fred Durst as their key marketing guy, the band would have soared in popularity. Durst was also lead singer for popular band Limp Bizkit. The band Staind did wonders under Durst's guidance. When up and coming band Taproot left Durst, that band's popularity plunged.
My first concert was the Rochester Edge Fest with both Joydrop and Citizen King. They were out in the crowds before their sets selling CDs and giving autographs. I got every members autograph on my CD insert and they were all super friendly and chatting with folks. I even got to skateboard briefly with the lead singer of Citizen King after the show. I've been to countless concerts since and to this day none have been able to measure up to that experience.
Saw them at Summersault 98 at the racetrack in Shediac - well, "saw" is a strong word, Tony, the drummer, was the only one I had a clear view of. Pretty sure I was the only kid in my high school who wore a Joydrop t-shirt.
I suspect this band didn't blow up because there wasn't more songs like beautiful. Most of their music was more so just alternative rock-lite stuff, not industrial rock music.
A lot of mothers caged their daughters when their daughters were most beautiful and powerful. The chain of abuse from mother to daughter began before we were human and still makes us inhuman to this day.
I listen to this when I feel ugly compared to other girls. She’s not saying their not beautiful still but she’s also acknowledged that’s she herself is beautiful and I need to do that more. A+ song and it’s super relatable
