I think the Police Officer has a very good point about the laws in WA, USA. Here in Australia you cannot touch a phone (and many other devices) when in operation of a motor vehicle. We have specially designed cameras to catch people using their phones when driving too, as it's become such a big issue. Hands-free is allowed on unrestricted licences, but you cannot touch the phone in anyway, must use voice activation.

Rules vary by state. Make sure to know the rules of the states in which you drive. MORE importantly, drive responsibly. Obviously the rules in Washington state regarding texting are way too lax. 6000 people die each year because of distracted drivers. One of those was my brother's wife.

@@elgandos2 You are incorrect...You don't even have to be using the phone but as long as it's in your hands in most states you are breaking the law. My phone slipped from my seat to the floor when I applied my brakes going down a hill and when I reached down to pick it up an officer saw it in my hands. It didn't matter if I was using it as I still had to pay $325.00 for the citation. Thats what needs to be done in Washington. If all they need to do is say that they were not texting or using the phone they can get away with any use of the device the law is incredibly stupid.

It's really annoying. How can you be so selfish, to not just your passengers lives, but the lives of others on the road. Yeah it's like that here in California too. If your phone is in your hand, you get a ticket. Even if you're not using it. I found that out the hard way a couple of years ago. I was holding my phone in my hand, not using it, and a police officer noticed and gave me a ticket. I showed her that I wasn't using it but she said that the law says we can't even hold it in our hands. It's a good thing though because using your phone while driving is dangerous.

This is what makes my blood boil! 0:19 we have a cop who sees a driver using his phone while driving. He stops the guy and hears some phony-baloney story about loading GPS info and lets the guy go! What the heck happened to a law called, 'Careless Driving'? Why do we need laws specifically aimed at a particular offense? Careless driving, distracted driving, texting or talking on a phone. They're all the same thing and can have the same results. I understand that the cops aren't totally to blame; ambulance chasing lawyers are also partially responsible but when is common sense going to prevail and it is recognized that phones in cars used by stupid ignorant people are a problem that has reached epidemic proportions in this country, if not the world? California has the right idea. If you're holding a phone in your hand and driving...you are violating the law. No arguments, no excuses.

She decided looking down for the apple was better than watching the road. She drove into my lane and crashed into me. This was published in '14 and has gone exponentially worse since then. I see people texting on every intersection. Yes, every intersection.
Look, I don't care if you endanger your own life while operating 2 ton killing machine. But I do care for my life. So, if you crash in front of me because you were f'ing around with your phone, you can pretty much be certain that I will not have any sympathy for you. Because you most certainly have no regard for other people's life!

Oh you Americans. Absolute geniuses legislators. Can use your phone for everything else just don’t text. Wonder why there’s so many accidents. Time to get a new policy in place Washingtonians. I suppose that would be against your rights though. Virtually do what you like with your mobile. Totally crazy but then again every one has the right to own a firearm too. Go figure. The world shakes their collective heads at this nonsense. Totally ridiculous.

No bullshit! 🙄 I think that they should still get a ticket because they should be pulling over and stopped to search in GPS, it's still dangerous and you still can't do that while you're driving! That's bullshit and they're probably lying about really doing GPS because I know that's what I would say if I was in the situation! 😆

As many folks here are commenting, it doesn't matter what someone is doing on a mobile device, it shouldn't be in ones hands. Punch in coordinates before you leave, let calls go to inbox, and to hell with text messaging. I have a good mind to start confiscating if I'm ever a passenger... which is rare. Not in the mood to end up in the E.R.
For the record, mine's always at home, usually dead. I don't care. Grew up in the 90s without one.

  • @bettawitch4606

It should be as easy as possible for cops to stop distracted driving. Entering info to a phone, text or maps are equally dangerous and should be equally punished. No exceptions. Do you love somebody, parents, child, family, significant other. Would you care what the person was doing on their phone when they killed the person you love? No you would not care. It needs to be "using the phone" not "Oh I was not texting, I was using a map, or Facebook". Doesn't matter, you could have killed someone. And parents, record your kids. Do your part to make sure your kid is not distracted driving. I grew up without Phones being something you did while driving, that wasn't the case until I was in my 20s. So they are not suffering because they can't use their phone and drive. Its better than them being dead.

An example of very poorly drafted legislation creating enforcement problems with a serious safety issue. Has this legislation been changed since the video was shot in 2014?

Hi Mark, Yes. The Driving Under the Influence of Electronics (E-DUI) Act went into effect on July 23, 2017. This new law makes it illegal for Washington drivers to use hand-held cell phones, tablets, laptops, video games, etc. while they are driving, stopped in traffic, or stopped at a light.

All generations are guilty. Don't alienate an entire generation. I'm 26 and I put my phone in the back seat. My sister is 23 and she used to the same. She's constantly yells at my 55 year old dad and 50 year old mom, with MS, to put their phones down. My parents still text and drive despite a young woman t-boning my sister because she was texting and driving. Blew through a stop light. My sister is now blind, and has unpredictable grand mal seizures. Yet, my parents still text and drive. My sister can always tell because it gets too quiet. That "us vs. them" mentality is what's cancerous.

i mean isnt constantly looking over to see the "indicators" of texting while dring, also distracted drving on the officers part? i know distracted driving is a huge issue and i dont have the solution to it, but having our officers be distracted looking for distractors seems counter-intuitive
