    Perhaps try a garden debris bin. I tried it this year and it worked very well. I took 15 gallon totes and elevated them. I placed 5 holes on one of the long sides so that any extra water could drain out. Under those holes, I placed a bucket so that I could catch the ferment water to use on my plants as a fertilizer. I placed garden waste along with excess kitchen scraps inside of those totes throughout the season. I now have the ability to empty those totes into unfinished beds without the hassle of digging anything up.

      Mentally, it is important for me to keep my gardening space clean and organized so I made it just as important. I try to clean up right after before moving on to the next thing. Sometimes easier said than done and when that happens! Just like I set aside times to seed start, plant or harvest...I will set aside time to weed, clean and put away things. Anyone can do this!
      Wagon made things so much easier for me. Took the strain of carrying heavy things off and helped make less trips. I've had this Gorilla one for many years (6+?), although it has some cracks and I've had to replace the tires it was worth it!

    Very nice! I do the same with my garden debris except I add/bury the debris in all my beds and do a lot of composting in place. Love it! It keeps my soil so healthy. Next time, try using a tarp instead of plastic. Tarps work wonderfully for jobs like that. I will be stealing this idea. Such a great way to compost. First time watching your channel. My parents used to do this when we lived in upstate New York. I live in Florida now which is totally different. Try using a large tarp underneath all your garden debris and after forking it into the bed you can move it easier without the plastic breaking.. Then you can slide it towards your bed and roll it into it. It’s easier.

    • @easygrowinggarden

    Thanks for the video. This year I started tossing garden debris throughout the season into a side bed rather than hauling it to the compost bins. I am in Zone 7a NY so colder over the winter which may mean my materials break down more slowly than yours, but I will see how things look in the spring. The virtue of your method is likely that the materials stay relatively moist, which hastens decomposition. The materials in my wire bins also seem to be breaking down much more slowly and tend to be dry. Apparently one is supposed to water a compost bin, but who has time for that :)?

    • @easygrowinggarden

    • @easygrowinggarden
      @easygrowinggarden  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes lots of volunteer seedlings but it's a quick fix. The seeds in the top 1-2 inch of the soil will germinate and mostly at the same time so I knock down the seedlings with my hand and that will take care of it. There is a second round of volunteer seedlings that happen when I remove the roots of my spring crop to plant my summer crops. Essentially I'm bringing up soil and seeds from down below to the surface and those seeds now have to right condition to germinate. I just knock those seedling down and seed my summer crop. Hope that makes sense and I probably could've have just answered that with a yes!🤣

    • @easygrowinggarden
      @easygrowinggarden  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, there will be volunteers! If it's one here and there, I'll grow it out but if there is a lot in a specific area I'll just rake my hand over it and that will remove them. This is a cold compost method so any seeds you put in, including weed seeds are all still viable. It's all easy to remove especially if you use the compost in a concentrated area so don't let that stop you from trying this method!

    Hi there. All is well! I have learned from a number of TH-camrs that adding worms to the compost helps to break down the large pieces because the worms eat on the chunky pieces. Also, when the worms die, their dead bodies add more nutrition to the soil. Please try! Blessings!

    • @Daveyboy12345
      @Daveyboy12345 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      No need to add worms they come naturally by the fact you have a raised bed on soil

    • @easygrowinggarden

      Thanks for the tip...worms do amazing things for the garden! The worms find this compost with ease and definitely help with the breakdown but once everything has pretty much broken down and there is much of a "food source" left, the worms leave for better areas.

    Shallow compost won’t work in a CA garden simply because we have no water. Retaining aeration and moisture simultaneously is tricky to get right, and our compost heaps tend to be enclosed towers. It is really interesting to see how different climate zones deal with compost. Thanks!

    • @easygrowinggarden
      @easygrowinggarden  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think making compost is similar to gardening in that we have to adjust for our climate but the principles are the same! I'll have to check out the compost heaps used in your region. Just a side note, I do not aerate this bed at all once it's topped with a layer of compost. Also during the summer when we don't get rain, I water this bed like any of my other beds causing I'm growing in it.

    • @KarlLew
      @KarlLew 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@easygrowinggarden Like you, I do not turn compost, so it was interesting to see your towers. Ii use a bottomless 5g bucketwith a gamma lid in the top of our towers and dump kitchen waste in the buckets throughout the year . That provides steady moisture with side aeration thru the yard waste at the sides. After a year, the bottom layer is pure compost (no major woody bits), and is harvestable with minor sifting for 1/2 inch chunks. In contrast, the lovely Pacific Northwest excels at your method!

      Chicken poop is excellent
      Here in the uk I can buy buckets of it in pellet form from the local allotment shop for cheap
      Add it straight to the compost heap/bed rather than mixing into beds waiting to be planted as it’s very hot still so not good unless left to break down a bit more
      It will speed up and improve the compost bed no end
      Also anyone you know who chops trees etc get them to deliver you some woodchip and mix that in or start a second one
      Covered over woodchip still takes a couple years but makes excellent compost with good moisture retention
      Mixed in your existing bed it wouldn’t take that long for great compost
      I’ve not bought compost in over 20 years of growing on allotments and always have great results
