    • @chuy3840
      @chuy3840 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes they can. Do the math on how many times a piston and cylinder complete a cycle. 1 hour drive daily, 365 days a year at 2000rpm average. 2000rpms is about 12x10^4 revolutions per hour, 365 days a year is about 43.8 million revolutions a year. For a 4 stroke engine it would be half that at approximately 24 million cycles for each piston. Up the rpms and youll get substantially more. Some bearings can be designed with infinite life cycles but require there to be an oil film between the moving parts at specific properties. I am not a biomedical engineer but you cant have these lubricants inside bodies obviously. Very special materials can only be used for medical purposes.

Fast forward almost 30 years and I got the Ross procedure. Doc said it should last the rest of my natural life but if we fast forward another 30 years, tech should be able to replace the whole thing if I need. Unlike many others here, i have actually seen the press conference. And there is a lot to clarify.
    - This is not the first artificial heart ever implanted.
    - It is not made to permanetly replace a heart, but to bridge the time till a doner is found.
    - It is however (and thats the big news) the closest we have come jet to a possibly permanet artificial heart.
    it will need way more develpment till then. But it alredy makes a cool AF sound :D.

One thing I am a bit morbidly curious about is how this would interact with death in general as your heart would never naturally stop. Bit scary to think about.

      Well duh insurance isn't covering experimental procedures, it's unproven. The company definitely comped the expense for it in this case though, they're ecstatic just to be able to implement it into a person for the first time. It's literally invaluable research data for them if they want to be able to eventually push this to market, the barrier of entry has to be suitably low for the subject to accept.

    not bad, only thing it has to pulsate meaning motor pulses , the body is made with a normal hearty we have all the schematics .. tissue functions oxidization mixing pressure and vacuuming it's what the heart does to manufacture the blood we need before we take what we want from it.

    Bad summary headline and descriptions. This isn't the first "total" or in-patient artificial heart, there are lots of such models and have been for decades. The new aspect is the non-beating, floating spinner that avoids wear -- not unlike the old Wenkel combustion engines if they spun on superconducting magnets. This means they have a better chance of lasting the rest of a transplant recipient's life instead of being only a bridge.

    As interesting as this is, i'm wondering why reinvent the wheel? Don't get me wrong, this is a great milestone as far as making replacement organs that have a reduced failure/rejection rate however i would imagine an organ that has a dual purpose like a heart and lung that complete cardiac and pulmonary functions while maintaining BP and filtering air. Of course that would also require better kidneys as well as a host of other improvements. Until then i look forward to one day developing something like this with great minds out there.
