Gosh what stories,,love this band like many people,,I was 11 or so in 77 and 78,, listening to my sisters lp.of Boston the rest was history for me,,what a great guy Tom ..I got to see Boston in Chattanooga river bend for the first time ,hands down best concert ever..just love listening and learning the history of this band...God bless Boston..
Tom Scholz, made the the debut "Boston" album in his spare time. He never expected it to go far or be the biggest selling debut ever. How many other musicians can say they wrote, played and recorded every instrument on their debut album and created their own sound effect devises in the process, back in the 70's era. ??? None! To top that... Scholz, began a business of making and creating amazing sound effect devises and marketed them to all musicians. The very successful "Rockman" series of sound effects used by thousands of musicians to date. Tom Scholz is a genius!! He could afford to take his time making another album because the debut album is still and will always be one of the best ever! The debut album "Boston" and the follow up "Don't Look Back" is to this day, are timeless masterpieces. Standards do not apply to Tom Scholz.
* Scholz Let me tell you, brother... it is not impossible. The band members, family and staff surrounding the group Boston are the most genuine and kind folks on earth! I have had that very same dream since I was a kid to meet him and that dream DID come true once. I thought my odds were one in a billion. I will never in my life forget that five minutes of my life that I have gotten to spend with Tom. It was literally a dream come true, once in a lifetime opportunity. The expression that 'we should never meet our heroes' is quite an exception with Tom. He's everything I have ever thought of him to be...kind, gentle, humble, inspirational and wow, towering tall as a tree! It was the grandest moment of my life and I have been massively inspired to follow in his footsteps in many choices in my life, both before and since meeting him. Hang on to that dream, my friend. Miracles are real.
I met and talked with Tom during Boston's 'Third Stage Tour' and I had put my Rockman face plate in my back pocket, I showed it to Tom and he got the biggest kick out of that, big smiles from Tom, got my picture with him. It still hangs in my music recording studio, and I still have & use all my Rockman amps while recording my own music, including my 'Bass Rockman'
Tom can do whatever he wants . It's his art . You don't have to like it . It's ready when he says it is . IMHO , very few people are on his level or would even understand . If it's gotta be " perfect " by his standards , so be it . I appreciate the music he has created .
Tom Scholz - Absolute genius! The comment about "no brad no rest of the band..." Hey you did know the first album WAS all Tom Scholz right. Drums Bass Guitar, Organ. Man..Genius.
Here's the real kicker, aside from taking piano lessons for three years starting at 6 years old Tom never really picked up an instrument until after he graduated from MIT and had his job at Polaroid! In a very short period of time he mastered guitar, keyboards, built his own audio equipment and recording gear, wrote what was to become the album "Boston", recorded all of the instruments playing them himself, IN HIS BASEMENT! Tom asked Brad Delp to sing lead vocal for him, which he did. Brad said that he didn't know that there really wasn't a band for about ten years! Tom didn't hire musicians until it became necessary in order to go on tour. Damn shame about Brads' death! Today (Aug 2019) Tom Scholzs' net worth is $100,000,000.00. Not too bad for a dude from Toledo, OH.
@@boosuedon He recorded mostly all of the parts and instruments. Few exceptions here and there, such as all the drum parts by Hashian and Masdea, some guitar parts by Goudreau and some bass parts by Sheehan. Overall, yes, Scholz carried nearly all of the weight recording just about all parts on the album. His net worth is impressive. Then again, he basically owns the Boston band name, rights and royalties. In the recent past, he's heavily toured. He owned SR&D music instrument company in the 80's/90's and I believe he owns the architecture company called Scholz Design, which is a spinoff to his late father's (Donald J. Scholz) architectural fame, called Scholz Homes.
We were told and believed that Boston was a real Band. Turns out it was never a Band but one guy in a Basement who fooled us all. Even the lyrics lied to us about signing the contract in that "This Band is Out of Sight" but it actually was.
Good for him, and impeller it's not an ego if youve got the goods to back it up. He's a legend. Especially as a non-tube amp player. Solid State dominant guitar tones that were iconic in a time when all these vintage amp snobs turn their noses up at stuff. In the 70's that guitar sound was just EPIC. One of the best selling debut albums of all time. In the face of the HUGE disco craze. The guy's competent in all he's done. And seems like a normal dude to me. Then we've got this Impeller propeller-head, you're just being a prick . Have a nice nap or something, stop being rude and childish, you're embarrassing yourself.
Why all the knocks. This guy founded the band and it was his work as an engineer the gave this group it's unmatched sound. Yes, the rest of the band was great, but even Brad Delp said it was Tom who was the brains behind these guys.
Sorry, but 5 to 6 years to create an album is way too long by anyone's standards. But since he wasn't just a fulltime musician, I can see how he'd need extra time to write tunes in his spare time, cull through them, then record it all and mix it all and such. 5 years? still too long.
+TruthSurge Tom created his best music when he didn't have to, when it was a hobby. But he couldn't reconcile the fact that the music was only good if the whole world liked it. So he shopped it to the world. And the world responded. But it also put demands on him he wasn't prepared to meet. And then it became this 'David v. Goliath' story to get out from under this monster that was created. Unfortunately, nothing survived in the process, most of all, the music. Tom never came close to producing music of that substance ever again. Thankfully, he has that back catalog of songs to rely on for tours, royalties and such. He's doing just fine, thank you.
Thanks on the playing. But as for who was the sound... I am just not aware of the facts enough to say much but yes, Tom was very smart and the guys he hired to do his first album (Delp and Goudreau) were good musicians but not the science-minded guy Scholz was so he probably felt like he was the ring leader and it probably did make him seem like a control freak and a prick. Maybe he was. Maybe Barry's sound was there first and Tom just cloned it. Anyway... would be awesome to just see all that go down via a time machine. hahaha
That was after he joined. If he made that BEFORE doing the first Boston album, then yeah, that'd be pretty much a proof (not 100% but pretty strong evidence). I'm sure Barry has written some book on it all by now. I just haven't been inclined to research that but I did msg "him" on his website months ago and wanted to see if I could just interview him and upload it to my YT channel. No reply. oh well. fuck him. :)
Hands down, Tom was the best songwriter of the band. The problem seemed to lie getting the songs from his head to his hands. He said in Musician magazine he didn't like going into a room and trying to put chords together. Barry was more technically proficient, Brad more lyrically proficient, but the Boston songs that stand the test of time originate with Scholz.

He did not play the drums! But still this is a landmark album and it paved the way for countless others.
Davez. No shit. 😂😂😂😂
He belongs in the RRHOF! (Rundgren, too)
We know all of this already
When the first album came out, I bought the sheet music book. The copyright on one of the songs was from 1969. Yep, he was working on it for a while
Everyone has dreams and ambitions, mine is to meet and talk withTom Scholtz the greatest music producer of all times what my chances?

My tribute to Brad and this GREAT SONG, Feelin' Satisfied!!! @
I want somebody to make a movie about the band and that would be awesome
Listening to Boston's debut album actually makes you immune to Coronavirus. I'm not joking around. I heard Dr Fauci say this
Fauci? That liar?
What a gentleman.
LOVE YA TOM. THE MAN WHO WAS BOSTON.
The man who was Boston, and still is. Tom will likely do a least one more tour.

Not the drums at all and not all guitar or bass parts (but most).

He did use a tube amp on the first album recordings...100 watt MK-2 Marshall
@@cbsundance Yeah, but he recreated that tone on the rest of the albums and tours with solid state rigs
5 years isnt that long, to put the best debut album ever together.. lol....😊
No 40 year old football players unless your Brady or a kicker like Vinertieri

The last album Tom S. has the guts too use Brad Delp vocals that was so low. Tom really ruined Boston, count how many years apart each album is?
