  • A short HD video on the magnificent Barre des Ecrins 4102m in the French Alps featuring butterflies, marmots, overhanging seracs plus a rarely seen brocken spectre and a classic mountaineering dilemma on whether to carry on in poor conditions and deteriorating weather after being sick? Or to stop because it is probably the sensible thing to do and the mountain will always be there?
What would you have done? :-)

I well know the white glacier and the peaks surrounding it. This film is gorgeous, wonderful, wonderful ... simply! To watch again and again .... Gilles

What a fabulous film. It brought back fantastic memories of a near identical day I spent on the Barre in 2010. Got to high on the ridge above the Dom de Neige then turned back exhausted! Beautifully shot, depicts Ailefroide perfectly! Thanks for making and sharing this!

@@chdslDave I will have a look! I have also visited the region of the Hautes Alpes but have only been to Eychauda Lake and the Pre de Madame Carle, not so high! I have uploaded several videos from the area. Cheers from Greece! Vassilis

Desperately sad news from the Pelvoux region of the Ecrins as of yesterday, Tuesday 15th September, with seven climbers killed and another seriously injured in an avalanche on the Dome de Neige. Wishing the injured climber a full + speedy recovery and sincere + deepest condolences to all family, friends and loved ones of the seven. RIP and may the broken spectre shine brighter for you all...

Thanks for sharing, Dave. Great photography and editing, as usual :)
Sadly, I've never been further than the Cairngorms (once, forty years ago), so I can only dream of such adventures.
I've stopped and turned back before reaching quite a few summits, on much lesser slopes in Snowdonia and the Lake District - they've always been a great experience, none-the-less ;)

Pete Howes Hey Pete thanks for taking the time to comment and I really appreciate the positive feedback! The Barre was not the first time I have stopped before the summit and will probably not be the last either! :-) Cheers Dave

Just a quick postscript to this wee video and my decision to stop at the Dome de Neige on the 04.08.14 due to lack of acclimatisation and deteriorating weather. I went back to the Barre des Ecrins and summited just over 3 years later on the 14.08.17 so happy days and it just goes to show that the mountain will always be there for another day... :-)
