    Props for mentioning Mr. Thornton. He's forgotten more about fishing than most of us will ever know. I haven't seen any other TH-camrs mention him. When I took up surf fishing, I read everything I could find that he ever wrote, and because of it, was able to rapidly get my bearings in the salt, as a central MS/AL fisherman.

    Bama, you know that when you start using bigger baits that you should use bigger gear. Even with your bigger rod and reel I'm not sure you'd have unstuck that stingray though! They're like a suction cup when they burrow under the sand. I've never even heard of a Soap Fish either and I've been fishing in the gulf my entire life! Maybe they don't work their way down to Texas.

    That "shiner" is a Mohara, they are the best snook and snapper bait. Softer than pinfish, big predators prefer them, easier to eat.

    Nice vid. But I always wonder why you guys don't use a simple plastic pearl under the weight. Every time the lead bounces on the knot while casting and fighting, it lowers the duracy of the line. Often there are sharp grades on it and even if not, the pressure damages it. That's a standard thing in Europe, and I think every fish you can save from dying is worth a few cents for that very cheap cosmetic. No offend, just wondering why...
    Good catches and greets from Bavaria

    There was a time when you could catch 4 foot reds off the wall

    • @texasplumr
      @texasplumr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm from Corpus Christi so I've never fished on that wall. But growing up it was nothing to catch bull Red in Corpus Christi Bay. Then the big freeze hit in, I believe 1983, but it actually froze the bay over and was below freezing for a week, with much of that down in the teens. When that ice finally melted it was nothing but a sea of dead fish. It stunk worse than anything I've ever smelled! I didn't get to experience it much because I'm a plumber and was working round the clock fixing broken water lines. But after that the Bull Red were gone and where it was normal to fill your boat, nobody could even fill the bag limit that TPWD enacted on Redfish and Speckled Trout after the freeze. Youngsters don't remember or weren't born when we didn't have size and bag limits. TPWD will now let you keep one trophy Red per day but I never do. In the winter time I'll usually catch a few 40+ inch Redfish in the surf but I never keep them. I'll keep slotted fish if we need the meat but mostly I release everything I catch anymore. At 67 though I just fish because I love to fish. Bama Saltwater kinda reminds me of myself when I was his age. I have to say too that I've fished in the gulf my entire life and never even heard of a soap fish!
