"When performing your duty as kaishaku, do not hesitate. Strike quickly and cleanly. Do not let him suffer needlessly." -Extract from Hagakure, on the duty of the executioner in performing Seppuku.
Choosing a second for seppuku was a very important task. You needed someone whom you trusted with your life (so to speak :P) someone who would not hesitate and dishonor you because of it. Often times it would be a Samurai’s closest friend, or even a Brother. This scene goes a long way to demonstrate how close Hasegawa and Katsumoto must have been during the Boshin War.
For me, this scene is one of the most powerful in the movie. Completely conveys the values and differences between both Algren and katsumotos’ cultures. How easily it’s misinterpreted by Algren, yet how sincere and heartfelt it was by katsumoto.
That's how they say "GG" back in the day.
"General Hasegawa asked me to help him end his life. A Samurai cannot stand the shame of defeat. I was honored to cut off this head" - Katsumoto.
No cellphone in sight. Just people living in the moment.

You gotta have balls of steel to gut yourself and not scream in agony while your organs are falling out.
Yo, I thought Logan Paul deleted this
A constant reminder that different cultures all have different ideas of honor.
fun fact: the actor in the scene (Togo Igawa) is the calming voice in Shogun 2
You know your respected when your enemy bows at your death. Ultimate sign of respect.
Don't try this at home. Try it at school.
“Hasegawa, he fought for the samurai?”

This scene was well... executed!
I love how all of his enemies were sitting in front of him in respect and silence.
