Diodes are just like one way valves for electricity. It is used to ensure that even if polarity is flipped by accident it wont cause any damage. However as the l298n and similar controllers depend on the voltage changing direction in order to change the direction in which it rotates the motor, a diode is of no use
Some people used diodes for input signals but your design doesnt have. Do you know why they would use it?
