We moved to Florida (USA) about 7 years ago and got a fixer-upper on a canal. So much for the "rag sailing" that we did for 5 years along the Eastern Pacific and the Southern Ocean on a 10.4m LOA, deep keel sloop rigged fiberglass boat. The better half and I had our "worldly cruise" and now are retired; but not from boating! So much for history. We just finished a built of a flat bottomed Pacific Power Dory, 6.1m LOA, 2.4m Beam, Ply on Frame, fiberglassed boat for these shallow canals, rivers and bay. The "Night Heron" draws only 18cm and we just launched her. We especially enjoyed this video - it's timeless - and the tips and advise you give makes sense. [BTW, we've seen it a number of times.] As you probably know, handling a 6.1m power boat with a 40hp, 4 stroke Mercury outboard in a fast breeze is quite a task. See. . . even old rag sailors can learn new tricks! Many thanks!!!
I've got my first boat this summer and learn lots of great infos from watching your vids. From trailer work, to fiberglass, to engine servicing and maintenance, boat and mecanic safety, boat skills and the most important, how not to give up, light her in fire and run around naked singning Akoumamatata while preparing a story for when the PD,FD and insurace will show up! Most important, buying the service manual for an old outboard will save your soul! Now that she is all good, I sadly have to winterize her this week-end. But for the next season, i know that the trailer is as safe and solid as a new one, the winch and "stop roller bracket" are now at the proper angle. Bunks and rollers adjusted. The deck is solid and waterproof, the outer shell all good if you are color blind. The engine now start at a pinky pull and from the data I've got from the tach/hour I installed, I'm 90% certain of the prop I'll need next season. I was about 1000rmp short at WOT with minimal load... The friend that sold it to me said he kept her in good shape.... All that work for a dead simple 16ft FG utility boat powered by an 1996 Evinrude 25hp 2 stroke 3cyl. rope and fart start. I'm happy in a way... if it had an electric starter and trim I would have had to work on them too! The beauty of all this, is that she is now mine and to my taste. In 5-6 years, I'll take a bigger project boat for sure... and not go full retard this time.. . Maybe.... haha

Thank you for this video.. I've been boating most of my life but the difference now is I own & operate the boat. You didn't make it complicated you showed what it is to maneuver. I have owned a boat now for 3 years and no mishaps. However there is always something to learn. thank you again!!!
Its a Yamaha setup so it just works.. I am having a problem with air being sucked in ( cavitation plate or ventalation) issues lately.. could be because I am still learning but I think I am pretty good at recognizing a problem.. this issue only happens in hard turns with the trim up a bit and\or when going wot with to much trim... But I cant seem to find the sweet spot. calvatation plate is 3/4 inches below keel keel so I am a little lost as to why it happening. But hey I keep learning... maybe different prop.. Ill keep watch and researching until i figure it out.. keeps me busy..

There are things explained here I've never heard explained in other videos. Love the bit about slowing down from planing speed to plowing at 8 knots. A lot of people have the wrong mentality when slowing down. Great, great video!!

Great discussion on speed concerns. Here in the States, No-Wake zones require the minimum speed that allows steerage. The absolute speed will vary by boat and conditions, especially current and wind. Some states and particular locations will have absolute speed limits, but maintaining control should always overrule nominal limits.
Yes, speed and wash (wake) seem to be something not well understood by most new boaters (and plenty of experienced boaters with 1000HP 50 foot motor cruisers!). Most small boats seem to make the most wash at about 8-9 knots, just before they start planing.
I'm 47 male never owned a boat this video really helped me and I wanted to say thank you. One thing I couldn't find on other videos was how to start an outboard. I took two trips out and failed both times because we didn't know to prime the bladder till it was stiff.

this is obviously a video for the novice; of course you are NO novice because you find it necessary to correct someone who took the time to teach others. Pilot a boat??? HAHAHAHA.. no such animal... you pilot a plane smartass.... Do you pilot a boat? If it's a sailing boat, you sail it. If you're the captain of a ship, you skipper it, and if you're the helmsman, you steer or helm it, but otherwise, there's no general term.
Sorry Bob....in terms of LANGUAGE it is entirely correct to 'drive' a boat once it has an engine. Is it popular to use that terminology? Nope. But it is correct. lol. Its also correct to 'drive' a motorcycle...for the same exact historical reason. Of course, this doesn't automatically mean that "riding" a motorcycle or "piloting" a boat would be incorrect. lol

My boss is having me get my captains license here in Florida. Growing up in Kansas (a state here with hardly any water thus not alot of boats) I had never even driven a boat until coming down here. Certainly different from a car, and a down right pain when it gets windy here. Our rental boat is a 20 foot pontoon with a small 60hp on it and it doesnt like to cooperate in the wind. Good tips here.
Thank you for this video. I wish we had some sort of education or needing a license for being allowed on the water in my country. Bought my first boat last summer and was so excited to get out knowing nothing of the markers or anything. Ended up driving full speed on the wrong side of a starboard marker and crashed hard over rocky shallow water. Felt like such an idiot driving the broken boat back to the place I bought it from like 2 hours earlier. No injuries luckily. I guess thats most important.

Hey Dangar , Good video. I would just like to add a better way to finish tying off a horn cleat Take your line around the cleat and then do the two figure of 8 on the cleat (as you did). Then do two more turns around the cleat. You then pull the line tight and it move snug under the figure of 8's .By using this method the cleat will not undo and never jam (as doing half hitches over the horn cleat can) . The cleat will always be easy to undo. Try it out .
+Semaj Rice Greetings, new boater. Just be aware that the color system of lights and buoys in Chicago will be opposite of what he describes in the video. Remember that for north, central, and south America the rule is "red, right, returning." I highly recommend contacting the Coast Guard Auxiliary or US Power Squadron to look into a new boaters course.
There definitely are some good courses out there. Somebody recently asked about doing a video on getting your license, which I think is a good idea but unfortunately it is different from state to state let alone country to country! I think I'll try sticking to things that are the same all around world. :)

Subject very important for all boaters. I've watched this a few times because of the background noise. Perhaps you could do a voice over and eliminate the harsh background, it would be 100% percent better. Stu, I believe distance off for paddle craft and swimmers is 60m, not 30. As a paddle crafter myself, I would really appreciate planning boats staying well clear, or as you say dropping to a no-wash speed. The worst for us is 20m off at 8 knots, so I end up spilling my cocktail.

The parts about docking your boat certainly cleared up a few problems I have been having, sometimes I think I have just been pure lucky other times I have bruises on the sides of my boat. BTW is that the Sydney Harbor bridge in the background. lol.

In the U. S. we say, red right (starboard) returning which means heading upstream keep red on right, so yes, U. S. just the opposite of many other countries. Interesting information.
Hi Mate, I really like your videos and have learned a lot from them. I am a new to me (used) power boat owner. It is a Rinker open bow V-hull 15ft with a 75hp Chrysler outboard. I would like to perform some basic spring maintenance on this 1984 outboard. I do not think the impeller has been replaced in a few years because the prior owner did not know it had one so I think I will start there. Most TH-cam channels just show removing the lower unit by unbolting the 4 bolts and sliding out the long drive shaft rod, then uncovering the impeller housing and replacing the rubber impeller and adding some new gaskets. I borrowed a library book about Chrysler outboards and there are a few water pump removal instructions I do not understand: ????Remove drive shaft seal from pump body by driving same out from inside pump body. Remove water pump back plate and gasket. Press drive shaft seal (garter spring on major sealing lip positioned out) in seal bore of pump body using seal installer (Special Tool T3012)???? Any help on this would be great because I have no idea what they are talking about. The motor seems to run great with the ear muffs on but I have not had it in the water as yet. Any other suggestions for routine maintenance would also be great. My list includes: 1 top off gear grease, 2 check and replace spark plugs, 3 add Sea Foam to fresh gas to clean carb. I had a marine mechanic check the outboard for compression and he felt it was fine with 130 in each cylinder. He also was skeptical about the motor not having a power trim tab - it is either all up or all down. Thanks for all your great TH-cam posts. Regards, Bob
Hi Bob, I'm not familiar with that outboard at all, but the drive shaft seals are under the water pump so you shouldn't need to worry about that at all unless you are getting water in your gearbox oil. I have a evenrude 90. Get about 27 mph wide open. If I hit my choke. It’s takes off too about 37 mph. Any ideas as too where I’m missing fuel?

Boating can be different in all situations. Its funny how much less of a wake the boat makes when its on plane.

That is funny. Why then is one of the most comprehensive books on boating called Chapman's Piloting and Seamanship. Now in its 67th edition.

My boss is having me get my captains license here in Florida. Growing up in Kansas (a state here with hardly any water thus not alot of boats) I had never even driven a boat until coming down here. Certainly different from a car, and a down right pain when it gets windy here. Our rental boat is a 20 foot pontoon with a small 60hp on it and it doesnt like to cooperate in the wind. Good tips here.
Thank you for this video. I wish we had some sort of education or needing a license for being allowed on the water in my country. Bought my first boat last summer and was so excited to get out knowing nothing of the markers or anything. Ended up driving full speed on the wrong side of a starboard marker and crashed hard over rocky shallow water. Felt like such an idiot driving the broken boat back to the place I bought it from like 2 hours earlier. No injuries luckily. I guess thats most important.

Hey Dangar , Good video. I would just like to add a better way to finish tying off a horn cleat Take your line around the cleat and then do the two figure of 8 on the cleat (as you did). Then do two more turns around the cleat. You then pull the line tight and it move snug under the figure of 8's .By using this method the cleat will not undo and never jam (as doing half hitches over the horn cleat can) . The cleat will always be easy to undo. Try it out .

+Semaj Rice Greetings, new boater. Just be aware that the color system of lights and buoys in Chicago will be opposite of what he describes in the video. Remember that for north, central, and south America the rule is "red, right, returning."
I highly recommend contacting the Coast Guard Auxiliary or US Power Squadron to look into a new boaters course.
There definitely are some good courses out there. Somebody recently asked about doing a video on getting your license, which I think is a good idea but unfortunately it is different from state to state let alone country to country! I think I'll try sticking to things that are the same all around world. :)
Seen a few of your vid now and as I am picking up my first solid hull boat next weekend I figure I could be watching more to get some tips and tricks up my sleeve

Subject very important for all boaters. I've watched this a few times because of the background noise. Perhaps you could do a voice over and eliminate the harsh background, it would be 100% percent better. I also thought your starting the video with checking the weather and the tides before castings off is spot on.

Stu, I believe distance off for paddle craft and swimmers is 60m, not 30. As a paddle crafter myself, I would really appreciate planning boats staying well clear, or as you say dropping to a no-wash speed. The worst for us is 20m off at 8 knots, so I end up spilling my cocktail.
I believe you are right, it is double for paddle craft and swimmers.

The parts about docking your boat certainly cleared up a few problems I have been having, sometimes I think I have just been pure lucky other times I have bruises on the sides of my boat. BTW is that the Sydney Harbor bridge in the background. lol.

In the U. S. we say, red right (starboard) returning which means heading upstream keep red on right, so yes, U. S. just the opposite of many other countries. Interesting information.
Hi Mate, I really like your videos and have learned a lot from them. I am a new to me (used) power boat owner. It is a Rinker open bow V-hull 15ft with a 75hp Chrysler outboard. I would like to perform some basic spring maintenance on this 1984 outboard. I do not think the impeller has been replaced in a few years because the prior owner did not know it had one so I think I will start there. Most TH-cam channels just show removing the lower unit by unbolting the 4 bolts and sliding out the long drive shaft rod, then uncovering the impeller housing and replacing the rubber impeller and adding some new gaskets. I borrowed a library book about Chrysler outboards and there are a few water pump removal instructions I do not understand: ????Remove drive shaft seal from pump body by driving same out from inside pump body. Remove water pump back plate and gasket. Press drive shaft seal (garter spring on major sealing lip positioned out) in seal bore of pump body using seal installer (Special Tool T3012)???? Any help on this would be great because I have no idea what they are talking about. The motor seems to run great with the ear muffs on but I have not had it in the water as yet. Any other suggestions for routine maintenance would also be great. My list includes: 1 top off gear grease, 2 check and replace spark plugs, 3 add Sea Foam to fresh gas to clean carb. I had a marine mechanic check the outboard for compression and he felt it was fine with 130 in each cylinder. He also was skeptical about the motor not having a power trim tab - it is either all up or all down. Thanks for all your great TH-cam posts. Regards, Bob
Hi Bob, I'm not familiar with that outboard at all, but the drive shaft seals are under the water pump so you shouldn't need to worry about that at all unless you are getting water in your gearbox oil.
