Moby first emerged as a pioneer of electronic music in the '90s. Since then, he has not only put his unique stamp on EDM and club culture, but has also written songs rich with emotional nuances. The sad “Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?”, a song about the melancholy we all feel sometimes for no obvious reason, became a song that defined our career. Now Moby has created a new orchestral version, featuring vocals from Apollo Jane and Deitrick Haddon.
The new single is accompanied by a music video that focuses on issues that have been close to the artist's heart for a long time: animal rights, environmental protection and climate change. Moby has once again joined forces with British illustrator and animator Steve Cutts, creator of the videos for “Are You Lost in the World Like Me” (2016) and “In This Cold Place” (2017). Cutts' completely hand-drawn animated video for "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?" features the star of the original 1999 video (dir. Susi Wilkinson, Hotessa Laurence, Filipe Alçada), Moby's alter ego Little Idiot, with his large expressive eyes. He and his dog embark on another trip to Earth from the moon, finding a troubled world full of angry people fighting for nothing.
Aboard their trusty wheelbarrow, the couple flies around the planet, witnessing burning rainforests, huge schools of fish and other marine life captured, farm animals crammed into a slaughterhouse, and more. A trick of the artistic imagination offers solutions to these crises: Little Idiot throws a glass of water off the drawing board to put out the fire, and an eraser appears to poke a hole in fishing nets. The video highlights Moby's views on the damage being done to Earth today, illustrates the complex interplay of different environmental issues, and encourages us to feel more empathy with animals and the natural world. It shows us that we can save the planet, if we are prepared to fight for it.
