A lot of these species don't even stay near bodies of water - they swarm above pavement miles away from shorelines, a nuisance to encounter when walking/running by, whether evening, midday or morning - and they do not just want those spots in the bright sun. They love being in the shade too. But at the end of the day, I am thankful that they are not mosquitos
It’s so cool to see my old Bio Professor Jacobus featured in a TH-cam channel I watch regularly! He truly deserves all the recognition he is getting for his many contributions to science.
Ohhh man! This was the exact bug stuck behind a board after fixing up some stuff at my faculty building. It was quite old, but well preserved. Who knew it had been dead a long time more than it was ever alove? It was at least 15 years old.
*Promortyus* is the seventh episode of the fourth season of Rick and Morty, and the 38th episode of the series overall. It premiered on May 10, 2020. It was written by Jeff Loveness and directed by Bryan Newton. The episode is rated TV-14-DLV. Glory to Glorzo.
I have seen a sort of mayfly swarm about 10 years ago. They were really cool. Their deaths feed birds so they can become parents. Its all a part of a balanced ecosystem.
I've had three land on me in the past week. They're stunningly speedy! And uncomfortable large! And a little buggy-eyed! And they "fidget" strangely! And they're COOL!
I seen the mayflies out today here in scotland and it was beautiful but sad. They are living their life to the fullest as i type this comment and after this day they will be gone from this universe forever. I hope they have a great day today
Mayflies in Indonesia are called Laron. On Rainy season it's a common thing that they infest a house and circle around light bulb on the night. I used to fear them (Feared I'll be stinged) but oh how embarrassed I feel when i know they're harmless and just comes in a house only to die later in the night.
Mayfies in the area I'm in sometimes get into swarms so big that dead ones need to be scraped off roads like snow in the winter, or you'll risk hydroplaning on bug guts
I have read about this during my elementary years. Ngl. It ws the reason for my first existential Crisis at that time. Though it was momentary because I am forgetful and easy giggle at things. 🤣🤣
Loved the video but just be aware of the inaccuracy @4.35. To sample mayflies you would do a kick sample.Wearing wading boots, go into the middle of the river and while holding a mesh net downstream, kick up the sediment. A scientist sampling mayflies looks a lot different than what you've portrayed.
In recent Ted Ed videos, (narrated by Addison Anderson because those are the only ones I watch), I've noticed there's a background music that makes it almost impossible to watch it peacefully like good old times. It's sort of a child's nursery tune and we don't need the music running like this, the animations are great on their own! And Addison's speech rate is faster now, not sure why. In older videos the pace was slightly slower, and was almost magnetic to the viewer's ears. 2 requests: Ditch the bgm and bring the narration speed back to previous levels, like good old days. Cheers!
Depending on the oxygen level in the water can determine what species can live in the water. Some mayfly larvae depend on high levels of oxygen in the water in order to thrive.
What you dont realise is that their brains are thousands of times smaller than ours. So signals work quicker. That means they perceive time differently. What is a minute to us can feel thousands of times longer than to us.
I was visiting family friends in Georgia once during mayfly breeding season and at one point we were on a boat approaching a bridge that was so covered in them that it looked like a layer of paint flew away from the bridge when we got close enough to startle them, just a sheet of bugs
When we lived in New Hampshire we experienced them for the first time, having been California Natives and they were very aggressive we have moved back to California and I don’t miss them in any way shape or form!
🐥🫠 "They live almost an entire year or two underwater. They swim, bore, crawl etc" Are you sure we should call them flies? 👀🦧 Like few ant species also fly before dying 🫠
