Do you include downhill running in your training?

Yes I do and I see that I'm getting faster. I used to play baseball in my country Dominican Republic and we use downhill training to get faster. Pitchers run uphill and long run for more strength on their legs.

I'm not the most sure footed person, but running downhill on semi technical trails is one of the most exhilarating, meditative experiences! Nothing exists but the wind in your face and the trail in front of you.

As a trail runner, I run a lot downhill on very technical single tracks. I find the benfits are significant in my tri's and XTerra tri's.

I’m baffled he didn’t talk at all about just trail running in general. Find a trailhead, make some vertical gain. And run back down!

While training for my first 140.6 last year my coach had me do hill intervals: moderate up then fast down with a 3min rest and repeat. I feel this is one of the best training tools ever, highly recommend.

Did this quite often training for the Lakeland 50 - it's a great strength builder - I probably should reintroduce this to my training

Awesome! Yes, love a good uphill session. Can't say I've done many downhill sessions.

Thanks Mark. I always felt like I was cheating when performing reps on declines but mentally it felts so much better. Happy to know we can gain benefits despite the preconception.

Please make a video on effects of running on hard surface/ roads. Does it cause muscle injury as i quit running on hard surface after i developed shin pain.

If you've chosen to live in the swiss alps...no chance at all to avoid downhill running. But I like it! 😉

I'm all for getting bulletproof legs! xD I just started implementing this in my training regime. I alternate between up-hills and down-hills every week, except for my deload weeks where I only do easy pace runs and lower mileage ;) Thanks for the tips on running downhill; I would however challenge your statement about running with a mid- to forefoot strike when running downhill. I am a midfoot striker when running on flat tarmak, but I get much better results and form, when I aim to place my strike a little more towards the heel while running downhill! As long as you keep a good rolling motion from heel to tip of the shoe, you should be in the clear! That's my experience, anyway;) Thanks!

i am a bit new to trail running. do u guys choose the shoes to be perfectly fit or 1/2 size up to give like 1-1.5 cm allowance so that your toes doesn't get bruise when running downhill? my currently shoes are actually 1/2 size bigger and i noticed when running downhill, my foot moves forward to occupy the allowance. it's a bit annoying but i am not sure if a truly fitted shoes will cause even more pain when running downhill?

Get your normal size. Lace up your shoes in a way to get a good lockdown but decent toe space

would running downhill help with plantar fasciitis? If I dont run, I'll lose conditioning. I cant run uphill or it will aggravate the fascia. If I run flat, it wont hurt at first but after the session, it will. Will downhill be something I can do in lieu of in the meantime?

How do you reduce the damage to your knees? Last time I did speed session downhill my knee exploded (we’ll not literally) took me out for a couple of weeks 😤

Build it up really gradually. I’d start with some short easy downhills

Could also be a problem of heel striking. While running upload forces you to run more on the forefoot, on downhill runs you easily heel strike. If you’re not used to heel striking, because you normally land on mid or forefoot, which is good, maybe this causes your problems. So take it slowly.

    • @YeNZeC
      @YeNZeC 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@tim2oo6 It should be common knowledge by now that you mid/forefoot strike and lightly load to calf by touching the heel.

Don’t disagree with anything in this video. But the risk of downhill repeats is just too much to make it worth it for triathlon.
