I spent 3 hours doing it but I was doing it wrong too. I was doing them on exhaust stroke. Your way of explaining is the best n most easy one. I will have a go again n hopefully the noise will go away. Thanks.
As mentioned there are two TDC's compression and exhaust. You need compression TDC. To check you have the right one both valves will be closed and there should be some play in BOTH rocker arms. If you are unsure, put your thumb in the spark plug hole and rotate the crank anti clockwise, as you approach TDC you will feel pressure build as both valves close. Hope this helps.
great video. very important you adjust on the right stroke as mentioned. the correct clearance for the valves on all models is 0.08mm (0.003 in). it is not necessary to remove the crank case cover on later models to set the timing marks - just remove the view ports with a hex nut and shine a torch in to see the F & T markings stamped on the inside of the alternator drum. you will know if you have adjusted on the wrong stroke because the engine will sound like its underwater when you fire it up.
i guess im asking randomly but does anybody know of a way to get back into an Instagram account? I was stupid lost my login password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me
@Davion Cullen I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
And though I don't have prior experience with this particular motor I have a good understanding of valve adjustment and operation. But let me just say it's really nice to see it gone through before diving into it yourself. Thank you good sir you now have another sub to deal with. Have a good one.
thanks for the video, I adjusted my valves for the first time today and went through turning the engine over and checking thinks before I called it done and found the rocker loose - after watching the video I realised that I set the valves on the exhaust compression. Nice and clear, thanks.
Excellent step by step instructions. Couldn't be easier. I initially started quite well but set the gap too large at 0.8mm which was stupid of me but I quickly realised my mistake. Keep up the good work my friend and thank you.
Would help if the pushrods were in at the time so you know the rocker is 'home' and also the TDC bit isn't entirely necessary, as long as the cams are on dwell and not lift, it's fine to adjust clearances. (And there's a good angle of crank rotation where the cams are on dwell angle)
And in response to dave broadbent, you don't set valve clearances on a hot engine unless a workshop manual/autodata etc says otherwise. It may be a good thing to verify that an engine does still have a little valve clearance when hot as the valves should still fully seat too cool
Forgive my ignorance but do you set the inlet and exhaust valve clearances at the same time on the same stroke or do you set the inlet valve clearance, turn the engine 360 degrees and set the exhaust valve clearance? Many thanks and great video by the way :)
Great video and explanation but you didn't do it on an assembled engine. If you did on an assembled engine, it would be more meaningful and would give real world explanation of the terms you tried to explore here in this video. Thumbs up for the nice work.
True, however this is also a very clean engine and dissassembled it help get the camera into angles that allows us to see what he's doing. His theory is sound and It wouldnt take much imagination (especially if you do this yourself on an assembled engine) to follow his steps.
Thanks for the tutorial. Although towards the end it makes no sense to me at all. You're pushing the rod up with a bigger gap than 0.08 and then pushing it down to suit your 0.08 feeler gauge. When you then tighten everything up this won't be left at 0.08 will it as it will move? I'm totally confused.
+Teej Holt He is demonstrating without the camshaft in place, so the rocker arms dont have anything holding them against the valves. Basically if you do what he is doing, WITH the camshaft in place and the piston at top dead center, you will be doing it correctly.

Friend I have a 125 xl and I was regular the chain of command of her, and suddenly the starting pedal was hard and the males, it did not work anymore. what could have happened?
Tighten or loosen so that a .08mm or .03" feeler gauge is a nice friction fit, on the loose side rather than the tight side.. You must also try and keep the feeler gauge level to the gap, so you do not get a false feeler friction test when set. Too tight and you can damage your engine allowing the piston to strike the valves...:-(
On my Chinese 125cc the they are both the same setting...08mm or .03" Depends on what feeler gauge you have , the .08mm feeler size = the .03" imperial sized feeler
My bike is a non runner, Got spark got petrol but no ignition, is it possible that I have a valve issue that prevents it from starting, I'm a bit thick so lay mans terms only please.
Hi. Does it turn over ? If so, it could well be the valves. Take out the plug and turn it over with your thumb tightly on the plug hole. As it turns you should feel alot of pressure on your thumb. If very little pressure, put a teaspoon measure of thick oil through the plug hole and wait a minute for it to settle around the piston top. Put your thumb on the hole and see if there's any difference when you turn it over. If the pressure has increased the fault is with your piston, rings, or the bore/barrel. Always worth checking the valves anyway. Hope this helps if you havnt fixed it yet. I know it's a long time ago.
4 mins to explain about TDC. and you dont actually even need an engine on TDC to adjust clearances... just make sure there is no travel on the pushrod, to give you a false reading.. aslong as the valves are completely shut, and the cam shaft isnt pushing on the push rod, its fine to adjust the valves
Have a look in a Haynes manual for your engine spec, it will tell you the limitations that you can go to, failing that you can go to any reputable auto repair tooling centre and pick up the correct tool for little money in the UK I went to Halfords and brought a set with cost me £3.99 it is worth mentioning that there are other sellers and others may be cheaper!
Thx, I used these to "measure" the gap, and the exhaust side was way off, I adjusted it so it was already a bit better and the stalling is history. Also better performance. So this was defenitly the problem, I'm now going to buy another set to do it correctly.
The engine stalled when it was cold. When it was hot there were no problems. I never could notice a withrawl in performance since I bought it secondhand, and it were my first miles on a motorcycle ever. The bike has 27.000km's.
OR and this is clever, read a haynes manual... plus, he doesent explain how to make sure its on the right stroke, bet a haynes maual does.. still interesting :D

First best video in valve tap adjustment mainly video close up shots in tap adjustment very nice camera work 👌👌👌👌👌👍

Thank you for a very clear, descriptive tutorial without all the unnessesary bamf that people include.
It takes lot of experience to get in there . Very simple and nice demonstration. i got it.

WELL EXPLAINED THANK YOUU
can i put an egnine from a CG 125 in the frame of an Honda XR 125 L?
Showing how to adjust tappets on an engine that doesn't have the pushrods in it is really pretty pointless.
I would of liked to find out what the point is before the firing mark.
Very informative guide. Thanks

whats the problem if cg 125 got a ticking sound?

Do the push rods still have to be in to adjust it.

valve clearance is mentioned as 0.08 understand 0.08 of an inch. am I correct.

another great video. :) I have just seen your comment on your old gunvidder channel.
How does oil reach the rocker?
doesn't the camshaft need to be in place to do this? How do you know that the tappets are in their "home" position without the camshaft in place?
Thanks alooot, thank u very very much sir . . .!
with a honda cg would a 2000 model piston barrel fit a 2002
Sorry i must have missed it. What feeler gauge do I want to tighten/loosen to? What should the gap be for the CG125 and clones?
Tighten or loosen so that a .08mm or .03" feeler gauge is a nice friction fit, on the loose side rather than the tight side..
You must also try and keep the feeler gauge level to the gap, so you do not get a false feeler friction test when set.
Too tight and you can damage your engine allowing the piston to strike the valves...:-(
Should both the Intake and exhaust be on .03 to .08mm? I have a chinese clone 158F and can't find any specs on it.
On my Chinese 125cc the they are both the same setting...08mm or .03"
Depends on what feeler gauge you have , the .08mm feeler size = the .03" imperial sized feeler
Hi. Inlet 0.03 and exhaust 0.04
Are the Rockers supposed to rock when adjusting as my ones don't even though I have the T mark aligned up?
If the rockers arnt rocking then there isn't any gap at all, or they're not listening to The Quo.

Fair enough, have you cleaned the carb too?
nice basic tutorial but you should make it in real at the end.now it remains only theory.do not try at home cause you ll have disaster results!

Actually the Haynes manual doesn't specify checking what stroke you are on, I was forced to find the solution here since I noticed there is difference
