I’m a former Barbie designer from 2007-2012. Gloria’s daughter Sasha is a callback to Barbie’s rivals The Bratz who disrupted the doll industry.
The ‘gang of four’ in the cafeteria resemble the My Scene characters (My Scene was Mattel’s answer to the Bratz), so the girls were meant to be a double-corollary for both the Bratz and My Scene dolls.
Sasha is the name of the Black Bratz character who is the most outspoken member of the group.
Ironically, I work for MGA now and I just designed the Bratz Pretty N Punk Sasha which just hit the market last week.

Love your review as always. I grew up in the 90s with Barbie’s and at 31 still collect them. Just have to mention, if you follow the current line of Barbie from this year, they are diverse! They have short Barbie, curvy Barbie, Barbie’s with a variety of disabilities. They even have a Barbie of Laverne Cox who is transgender. In that sense, I felt they accurately represented them in the movie. The doctor Barbie in the movie was portrayed by a transgender actress. As a trans woman myself I love to see that representation! Overall I loved the message of the movie. Side note, I did have the pregnant Midge doll growing up lmao

I loved the film it was so fun to watch in a packed cinema, all of the audience that went was 18+ in my theatre. It was quite a flawed film though, it felt very cramped with ideas and underdeveloped character arcs, I wish they ditched the whole Mattel story arc, I understand that they were suppose to be like the men in suits were suppose to be like the monkeys in Wizard of Oz, but it just felt like so much was going on, I forgot they were even a part of the movie a few times. I totally agree with the daughter point, I understand they wanted to cater to children too, but I think she could have been a more meaningful film with just America, maybe they could have shown scenes with America playing with Barbie as a child. i still loved it though, I was obsessed with Barbie as a kid and it made me feel really sentimental watching. Ryan was amazing too.

I actually wasn't going to see it based on so many negative reviews but your review as well as some others talking about the emotions they experienced made me run out and see it at the last minute Saturday evening on opening weekend. Still able to get a very good seat. One thing all reviewers, including you, are leaving out is that the Barbieland is influencing toy sales and demand for toys. When Barbieland turned to Kendom, there was a scene back in the real world at Mattel where pallets of toys were being delivered for Ken houses and it was mentioned that there was a huge demand for those toys. I think that influenced the execs to visit Barbieland to see what was going on. Also, the Ken doll's weapons were typical toys the kids would have to use in their own inventory, which probably meant the kids were fighting in the real world to also bring it back to Barbieland.

There are diverse Barbies. In recent years there have been Barbie’s of different shapes, sizes, colors, hair types, there’s a disabled Barbie as well.

I think the idea of putting Barbie in a box was to store her away somewhere with the other defective Barbies. Sort of in a westworld way where the robots that malfunction get sent to cold storage and just lull there forever.

    Barbie or Oppenheimer?
Well, there's just no choice is there?
Oppenheimer is another biopic on dead, wyt men that sez black scientists didn't exist at The Manhattan Project. A LIE.
Barbie sez: GET HIGH AND LOL.
    Barbie it is! 😂🤣

I really identified with the daughter in the movie. I remember growing up and my mom wanting me to play with barbies, but I outgrew them very quickly and at one point felt embarassed for ever liking them. Even came home from college to find my mom going through our stash, dreamhouse, pink corvette, and all.
When they revealed it was the mom who was playing with the barbie, I cried because it truly hit me how my mom felt, combined the existential thought of getting older and eventually losing your parents, while parents try to hang onto your youth. Definitely appreciated the mother daughter dynamic and felt it added many layers on how different generations view femininity and growing up in general.

No Barbie had great hair! It's when you cut it you realized her hair wasn't naturally curly. Than you realized you messed her up! Panic sets in and you throw her in the back of the closet. Bc if my mom sees it I will never get a new Barbie ever again. I haven't seen the movie but I can't wait to see Kate McKinnon as that bitter Barbie.

I have to give credit that at least they tried to make this interesting and take some liberties. but isn't it scary that this world we live in is so corporatized from the media to politics to everything has to go through that corporate filter. This corporatized world we live in leaves of bad taste in my mouth.

My theater was packed for this film. I also saw Oppenheimer over the weekend too and I personally liked Barbie better simply because it made me laugh. But Oppenheimer was definitely visually stunning in imax. I’m glad that both had great openings. Barbie was slightly more full and did get the extra special theater. People were even fighting over seats. Oppenheimer still had a great turn out.

I agree with you guys that it could have been more subversive but I still had a good time, it hit some emotional notes and a few laughs as well. Matchbox 20 was on heavy rotation on my Discman in the 90s so I lost it when they started singing 'Push' I thought that song was so deep when I was a teenager 😂 And maybe I am the only one but I didn't love the mom's speech about being a woman, I thought it was kind of trite..but maybe I follow too many anti-patriarchy accounts on social media loll..I gave Barbie 3/5 but will watch it again for the pop culture and fashion references 💖

I waited to watch this review until after I saw it and I agree with everything you both said. There was something missing and pieces that seemed unnecessary and forced but overall still fun. I actually loved Ryan Gosling as Ken. I felt like he really committed to it, I’m also biased though because I’m obsessed with The Place Beyond the Pines and can’t unsee him as a truly committed actor/artist. Just thinking about him as a mousketeer to where he is now I really can’t imagine anyone else in that role.

Accolades? This movie was awful. It is woke, but the character development was awful, Will Ferrell was annoying, and the message was heavy-handed and overly simplistic. The idea that women can't ever be right from a character with zero issues in her own life was ridiculous. Maybe if they actually showed that it could work, but her daughter hating her is because of her, not patriarchy.

I have a confession and question: as a Barbie-o-phile (?) was the "Kissing Barbie" in the movie? It was one of mine as a kid, I loved her chiffon dress covered in itty-bitty tinyred lips and she came with tube of pink heart-shaped lipstick? 😂😂 ( Don't laugh I'm old enough to recall Barbies that came with hands predrilled holes ready for the diamond ring..wow, we messed up so many girls 😬). *As a STEM woman and former STEM kid* I will neither confirm nor deny if I still have her, lol 😂. .... I love science and beautiful clothes..The Oscar de LaRenta Barbie [designer wardrobe collection to clarify] was a monetary sacrifice of my entire summer childhood stash!
