We want our audience to be able to find us in a sea of White cycling clubs. Anyone is welcome to create a club called "White Cyclists Network" among all the other white cycling clubs. But what would be the aim of your club? Would it be to create an exclusive group for only White cyclists or would you be doing that for a different purpose? We are not asking for "positive discrimination" or affirmative action even though that would be justified. We are not asking for our riders to be selected for Team GB or receive special treatment. All we are saying is that as a white majority, be mindful that minorities like black and brown riders and women riders have extra obstacles that your privilege as the majority does not allow you to worry about. Imagine walking into a football dressing room full of black and brown guys for the first time. How would you feel about being the only white guy in the room. Would you feel right at home with the culture and music and conversations? You would probably be a bit more self conscious than you would if the dressing room was full of white players? It is the same thing. A black guy joining a majority white cycling club may be self conscious about how they will be perceived. A woman joining a majority male club may be self conscious about her appearance. She may wonder whether the 'guys' are talking about her looks behind her back. I hope this helps you get the point. If not, simply understand that we are trying to get more people cycling - which is good for the environment.

Landon I don’t agree with this and think you are missing the point Mani is making. It’s all about access into the sport and giving people an opportunity to enjoy doing so without feeling self conscious or anxious in a predominantly white represented sport. Nothing to do with labels, nothing to do with division. Keep up the great work Mani.
It is sad that explanations like this need to be made, but unfortunately many people are not aware, or pretend not to be, of what structural racism is. Great work Black Cyclists Network, realy great!
Excellent video. Love the positives to develop within cycling. The cycling community can only be enhanced by wider range of groups. Every year on international women's day, there is a flood of comments; "What about international men's day?". I see similar comments raised here. Why? If the barriers to cycling don't affect you, why choose to be negative to those raising valid issues for those who are affected? Every cycle race, team, club ride I've been on in the UK is predominantly white male based. Any groups which help promote and provide options to increase participation get my vote 100%. That cop needs an official reprimand. Kudos for being able to laugh it off, it is funny, but also demonstrates the undertones of racism. Wish BCN happy cycling and keep spreading the word, doing sterling work. The BCN kit looks so cool.
As a black american, I applaud you for this vlog. I live here in SoCal and I ride with a local club from time to time. I live in the suburbs about 40 miles southeast of LA. Most riders in clubs in this area are white, when I ride with them, I'm respected as a cyclist not a color. We have a great time riding and that's the point. Riding is my sanctuary, when people see me out riding, they'll figure what race I am, I leave it at that. Thank you for supporting thru your vlog. Ride on.
Elmer, I’m super happy to hear that cycling can be a sanctuary for you, and that that isn’t taken away from you by anyone trying to limit access to this beautiful sport for any reason, race or color or otherwise. Right now the country is amplifying all the shortfalls, but to see examples like yours we can use as a hope and a goal is crazy inspiring and so necessary.

First Francis thank you and Mani for addressing this elephant in the room. Black Cycling Network is an necessary answer to an age old problem for people like me who love cycling. I was a member of Mosquito cycles in the 80's when mountain biking was in its ascendence. Where it was located and it's affiliation with Brixton Cycles I felt welcomed and valued. As in travelled to events throughout the UK I encountered less than subtle racism which I always thought was embolden by the lack of presence of black cyclists like myself. I was not deterred as the sport and the friends I acquired made me continue my love of cycling. You may say so what is the problem? I had to encounter abuse and racism at levels that few would choose to endure. The sport of cycling is still enclave of a mindset that even in the professional peleton displays it's racist overtones. So to every cyclist club throughout the land the next time you have a club ride look around you and think for a moment. If you see no one who is Black and or any other minority ask your selves why! Of course location and population demographics will play their part but do you honestly believe that the sport of cyclings allure is one that does not appeal to those who are not white?
5:12 astonishing to be stopped "at random" by police and accused of smoking cannabis. That situation is not part of any list of things I envision I might be stopped by police for. And that is a reality to PoC on a regular basis. That is why we need to highlight this so that the majority understands what is going on.
It is astonishing but, sadly, also quite common. This happened to my brother regularly when he was attending Stanford years ago. It's sort of a fish-out-of-water suspicion, where the officer thinks "why is HE here?"
It hopefully gives some a view into why some citizens have a different relationship with law enforcement. We aren't making this up it is very real and it's painful to see some that don't have to deal with it deny that the problem exists.

Thanks for covering this . I wasn't aware of the Black Cyclists Network and as a black cyclist who joined a local cycling club, i had a lot of questions and thoughts regarding the topics covered here. It's nice to know BCN is out there.
We need more influencers like you Francis willing to prioritise black people’s voices and not speak over people like Mani! Solid video, thanks for this just what I needed on a chilled Sunday :). Mani's the man, instant follow and support to what he is doing.
The Black Cyclist Network is a great Idea. I can relate to what was said in this video as I am black and a cyclist in South Africa. I usually cycle Solo, as I always feel like I am an outsider when joining the cycling groups/clubs as most are white-dominated.
My silence is a form of condonement; I am working on a personal statement for social media. Also, when I try to treat and think of everyone the same, that is a bit immature. Embracing the differences is really where love becomes transcendent. I am contemplating that this is actually the foundation of human equality. Finally, I have to remember that, by default, I look at the world through my own filters and subconciously am self-centered; not in the narcissistic sense, but rather that I naturally see the world through my own eyes. I must constantly question my frame of reference in order to truly try and understand what is going on with someone else. Reality is highly relative, based on one's personal perspective and experience. I was struggling with the whole Black Lives Matter, because I personally feel like All Lives Matter. This social media post helped me get over that: "If you are a Christian, and can't hear #BlackLivesMatter without feeling the need to respond with a criticism that "All Lives Matter," then crack open your Bible and hit up Luke 15. Don't have it handy? Let me summarize. There are 100 sheep, but one goes missing. Jesus leaves the 99 and goes after the one. The 99: "But... what about us? Don't we matter?" Of course the 99 still matter, but they're not the ones in danger. The one is. I'll say it again, #BlackLivesMatter.” Because of personal choices and consequences, I have always identified with the one sheep. I had to realize that this time, it isn't about me because I am one of the 99.
Just had the opportunity to watch this video all the way from Minnesota. I am a Black Cyclist and from my past experience, I’m the only person that looks like me at many club rides that I show up to. I never feel inferior, but there’s always that what is he doing here for from someone in the group. I just show my legs which tend to tame the hurdles that I come across. I really appreciate that you took the time to make this video and identify this dilemma in cycling and how you seek to progress the sport for those of us who may not have had a conduit on how to do so.
(I just posted this on the first vlog) Black Cyclist This is lovely to see! As I near the big 60, I decided to hang up my running shoes and take up cycling. I agree that every cyclist I encounter is great, BUT I’m not quick, I’m struggling with clipping in and out and am not great on hills (Yet) which is a pain as I live on top of a big one!. I tried a group ride with a local club, and because they had to keep waiting for me, I was forced to do what I have called ‘the ride of shame’ (sent back). They said I could ride with them again once I was stronger, but I’m now caught in a vicious circle, struggling on my own to get motivated and develop and my confidence is knocked so won’t look for another club in case the same thing happens! I’m sure I’ll get there! Good luck with this buddy, it is much needed ....

This is AWESOME!!! This Sport needs to be promoted among UK Black Folk as much as possible. Its benefits from physical health, mental health, teamwork, etc are probably the highest of any sport. Thank you for featuring BCN on your vlog.
You followed up a year on Francis, big up. Interesting topic in these straightened times. Ironically I went on a long ride last week through Surrey and ended up just off the Kings road. Stopped for a much needed break and refuel and patronised Sainsburys. After buying a few bits propped up my bike and had a munch. Noticed a animated resident several times in and out. Bearing in mind I'm clad in lycra in full mamil effect. Within 10 minutes an unmarked police car pulled up with three armed plain clothes officers in tow. Funnily enough I was ready to get my backside home. I noticed the police scope me out and even they seemed bemused. Now I'm wondering if whoever called the old bill thought my get up was part of some elaborate rouse :-/ Anyway there you have it. It is said when America sneezes England catches a cold. Can you imagine fast forward 10 years and those same police pull up for me me and straight away there is a stand off wires are crossed and there's a serious confrontation. I rode home deflated and pissed. I've worked within the cycle industry and experienced racism directly and oddly enough have a colleague who has shared a few stories with me that have cooberated my worst fears regarding certain barriers they have faced. Cycling is a microcosm of society and is strewn with many ism's. Race and class counts for a lot. There are talented working class white boy's that will never get a chance at road cycling. Also just a reminder to men in general. It's not a crime to wear lycra. I've had shouts from van's from idiots that think it has something to do with sexuality ! Strangely having come from a footballing background cycling is one of the hardest sports I've ever done. I think there are still a few brother's that are worried about donning lycra. Anyway it will be interesting to see how many thumbs up/down/views you receive. Respect for being consistent and highlighting an issue you might get some flack for 👊
Francis, I was wondering how you were going to address what has become a global response to these injustices. I believe we are at a turning point as a species because the challenges we face (racism, pandemics, global warming, economic inequality, health care, etc.) will require ALL of humanity to work together. This is really great, Francis. I made a video on my own channel where I was thinking out loud about what I can do to be helpful to cyclists of color. These are some helpful tips. Thanks to you, Mani, and the BCN.
I'm a white guy in my late 50s. Over the course of my 25 year amateur racing career in the US (retired from racing in 2008), I got stopped by police several times while out on training rides, both by myself and on group rides, but all instances were traffic related, and neither I nor anyone I was riding with was every searched nor accused of anything else. It's hard to imagine having to put up with what Mani and other black riders have had to deal with.
That policeman who stopped him looked as if he had stepped out of a 1970s TV cop show and had the attitude to go with it (I'm stopping you for wearing an offensive shirt!). Absolutely disgusting that the police can do this - there was no reason to pull over a cyclist - and one in all the gear ? who presumambly undoes all the fitness involved by having a quick spliff before setting off.

All sports need diversity where people of all races, genders and ages can do what they love to do. It's great to see more diversity in cycling. Great vlog. Big respect to Mani and his club. Subbed.
Cycling is an individual sport, you need a bike, a road and your will to enjoy the ride. If you find someone to share that moment with you, it becomes great. But that is secondary. There is no need to be a member of a club to climb a mountain, you don't need any acceptance from people to feel the blood pumping in your ears when you push 50kmh on an empty road. Pedals, wheels, climbs do not give any privilege nor racism, do not care about your colture or your music taste. This is how the sport makes us overcome our differences: by making them irrelevant to the outcome of the result. It's you and the reaching of your goal, with or without cool shades. If people are daunted by being alone or different from the others while doing so...well...they should focus on what really matters, and this giving them a shielded environment will only justify their fears and worsen the issue. More watts, less politics

Mani...I applaud anyone who stands up in the community and tries to improve the lives of others. You can tell by the way you dealt with the police officer that you have the right attributes to drive positive change...however frustrating the situation may be, stay calm and report. There's rarely a good outcome when you choose to go on the offensive. The more cyclists the better. Great vlog Francis.

There's a black cyclist, (name of Eldred), in Texas, who has a YT channel called Veloharmony. He gives common sense assessments of products, and has video of some great group rides with good commentary. He could probably do with a little more traffic on his site.

Interesting discussion and one which has been going for for centuries. The awful violence this weekend does not help any cause. The vast majority of people totally understand what diversity is and practice it without any problem. It is good that Mani can help any person get involve in cycling. It is a remarkable pastime to do, it’s healthy, you get to meet new people, you learn new skills, it’s social and it can help your mental health and wellbeing.

One question: Your Regents Park rides, are these rides on the public roadways or thru the park (away from road traffic)?
He’s right. Our sport is white dominated.But what i’ve seen so far from our colored brothers(and sisters!) like the Legion riders and african riders in general is actually pretty good! Our rainbow jersey carries all colors,so should our sport!
“Our Sport” is dominated by white stuck up bike snobs who look down on all other cyclists who ain’t dressed in expensive Lycra and riding carbon bikes! It wants to get its head out of its arse and be more welcoming to all riders!
I know you mean well so be sure not to use the word “colored” when referring to blacks and people of color. “Colored” was used in the US during the era where Jim Crow laws enforced segregation of black people, who were treated like animals and even killed for daring to speak to a white person. It’s a word that has derogatory connotation in the modern era because it is still used as a means to insult black people.
Great video with you and Mani on top form; both of you are very eloquent. The police/cannabis incident was Mani is appalling. If it had been me then I'd have reported them or worse have started and ended a fight. It's a tribute to him that he kept his cool. (I'm a white Mamil).

I rode past these guys in Loughton the other week. A good vibrant group. As a young man of colour it was good to know this is out there, though I am not part of it it’s nice to know it exists. Again, this isn’t about positive discrimination it’s used as a way of encouraging black cyclists into the sport which is very much white dominated. Stay safe!

If you see no one who is Black and or any other minority ask your selves why!
Of course location and population demographics will play their part but do you honestly believe that the sport of cyclings allure is one that does not appeal to those who are not white?
5:12 astonishing to be stopped "at random" by police and accused of smoking cannabis. That situation is not part of any list of things I envision I might be stopped by police for. And that is a reality to PoC on a regular basis. That is why we need to highlight this so that the majority understands what is going on.
It is astonishing but, sadly, also quite common. This happened to my brother regularly when he was attending Stanford years ago. It's sort of a fish-out-of-water suspicion, where the officer thinks "why is HE here?"
It hopefully gives some a view into why some citizens have a different relationship with law enforcement. We aren't making this up it is very real and it's painful to see some that don't have to deal with it deny that the problem exists.
Did you see just how fast the other Cunstable clammed up as soon as Mani tried to engage him? The Police are trained and continue to develop these psychological tactics scrawled in crayon at the early Learning center.
Don't really believe it until you see it yourself!
Its actually not the reality for the VAST majority of PoC (speaking from experience as a PoC who knows lots of other PoC but you know...what do I know right?!?!).

Now this guy talking BS to promote his channel. Police arrest more people because do more crime it is just simple statistics................. Thanks for covering this . I wasn't aware of the Black Cyclists Network and as a black cyclist who joined a local cycling club, i had a lot of questions and thoughts regarding the topics covered here. It's nice to know BCN is out there.

The Black Cyclist Network is a great Idea. I can relate to what was said in this video as I am black and a cyclist in South Africa. I usually cycle Solo, as I always feel like I am an outsider when joining the cycling groups/clubs as most are white-dominated.
My silence is a form of condonement; I am working on a personal statement for social media. Also, when I try to treat and think of everyone the same, that is a bit immature. Embracing the differences is really where love becomes transcendent. I am contemplating that this is actually the foundation of human equality. Finally, I have to remember that, by default, I look at the world through my own filters and subconciously am self-centered; not in the narcissistic sense, but rather that I naturally see the world through my own eyes. I must constantly question my frame of reference in order to truly try and understand what is going on with someone else. Reality is highly relative, based on one's personal perspective and experience.
I was struggling with the whole Black Lives Matter, because I personally feel like All Lives Matter. This social media post helped me get over that:
"If you are a Christian, and can't hear #BlackLivesMatter without feeling the need to respond with a criticism that "All Lives Matter," then crack open your Bible and hit up Luke 15.
Don't have it handy? Let me summarize.

Because of personal choices and consequences, I have always identified with the one sheep. I had to realize that this time, it isn't about me because I am one of the 99.

Just had the opportunity to watch this video all the way from Minnesota. I am a Black Cyclist and from my past experience, I’m the only person that looks like me at many club rides that I show up to. I never feel inferior, but there’s always that what is he doing here for from someone in the group. I just show my legs which tend to tame the hurdles that I come across. I really appreciate that you took the time to make this video and identify this dilemma in cycling and how you seek to progress the sport for those of us who may not have had a conduit on how to do so.

(I just posted this on the first vlog) Black Cyclist This is lovely to see! As I near the big 60, I decided to hang up my running shoes and take up cycling. I agree that every cyclist I encounter is great, BUT I’m not quick, I’m struggling with clipping in and out and am not great on hills (Yet) which is a pain as I live on top of a big one!. I tried a group ride with a local club, and because they had to keep waiting for me, I was forced to do what I have called ‘the ride of shame’ (sent back). They said I could ride with them again once I was stronger, but I’m now caught in a vicious circle, struggling on my own to get motivated and develop and my confidence is knocked so won’t look for another club in case the same thing happens! I’m sure I’ll get there! Good luck with this buddy, it is much needed ....

This is AWESOME!!! This Sport needs to be promoted among UK Black Folk as much as possible. Its benefits from physical health, mental health, teamwork, etc are probably the highest of any sport. Thank you for featuring BCN on your vlog.

You followed up a year on Francis, big up. Interesting topic in these straightened times. Ironically I went on a long ride last week through Surrey and ended up just off the Kings road. Stopped for a much needed break and refuel and patronised Sainsburys. After buying a few bits propped up my bike and had a munch. Noticed a animated resident several times in and out. Bearing in mind I'm clad in lycra in full mamil effect. Within 10 minutes an unmarked police car pulled up with three armed plain clothes officers in tow. Funnily enough I was ready to get my backside home. I noticed the police scope me out and even they seemed bemused. Now I'm wondering if whoever called the old bill thought my get up was part of some elaborate rouse :-/ Anyway there you have it. It is said when America sneezes England catches a cold. Can you imagine fast forward 10 years and those same police pull up for me me and straight away there is a stand off wires are crossed and there's a serious confrontation. I rode home deflated and pissed. I've worked within the cycle industry and experienced racism directly and oddly enough have a colleague who has shared a few stories with me that have cooberated my worst fears regarding certain barriers they have faced. Cycling is a microcosm of society and is strewn with many ism's. Race and class counts for a lot. There are talented working class white boy's that will never get a chance at road cycling. Also just a reminder to men in general. It's not a crime to wear lycra. I've had shouts from van's from idiots that think it has something to do with sexuality ! Strangely having come from a footballing background cycling is one of the hardest sports I've ever done. I think there are still a few brother's that are worried about donning lycra. Anyway it will be interesting to see how many thumbs up/down/views you receive. Respect for being consistent and highlighting an issue you might get some flack for 👊
Francis, I was wondering how you were going to address what has become a global response to these injustices. I believe we are at a turning point as a species because the challenges we face (racism, pandemics, global warming, economic inequality, health care, etc.) will require ALL of humanity to work together. This is really great, Francis. I made a video on my own channel where I was thinking out loud about what I can do to be helpful to cyclists of color. These are some helpful tips. Thanks to you, Mani, and the BCN.
I'm a white guy in my late 50s. Over the course of my 25 year amateur racing career in the US (retired from racing in 2008), I got stopped by police several times while out on training rides, both by myself and on group rides, but all instances were traffic related, and neither I nor anyone I was riding with was every searched nor accused of anything else. It's hard to imagine having to put up with what Mani and other black riders have had to deal with.
That policeman who stopped him looked as if he had stepped out of a 1970s TV cop show and had the attitude to go with it (I'm stopping you for wearing an offensive shirt!). Absolutely disgusting that the police can do this - there was no reason to pull over a cyclist - and one in all the gear ? who presumambly undoes all the fitness involved by having a quick spliff before setting off.

All sports need diversity where people of all races, genders and ages can do what they love to do. It's great to see more diversity in cycling. Great vlog. Big respect to Mani and his club. Subbed.
Cycling is an individual sport, you need a bike, a road and your will to enjoy the ride. If you find someone to share that moment with you, it becomes great. But that is secondary. There is no need to be a member of a club to climb a mountain, you don't need any acceptance from people to feel the blood pumping in your ears when you push 50kmh on an empty road. Pedals, wheels, climbs do not give any privilege nor racism, do not care about your colture or your music taste. This is how the sport makes us overcome our differences: by making them irrelevant to the outcome of the result. It's you and the reaching of your goal, with or without cool shades. If people are daunted by being alone or different from the others while doing so...well...they should focus on what really matters, and this giving them a shielded environment will only justify their fears and worsen the issue. More watts, less politics
Totally agree, if you want to join a club that’s great, but you shouldn’t be searching for one based on ethnicity.

Mani...I applaud anyone who stands up in the community and tries to improve the lives of others. You can tell by the way you dealt with the police officer that you have the right attributes to drive positive change...however frustrating the situation may be, stay calm and report. There's rarely a good outcome when you choose to go on the offensive. The more cyclists the better. Great vlog Francis.

There's a black cyclist, (name of Eldred), in Texas, who has a YT channel called Veloharmony. He gives common sense assessments of products, and has video of some great group rides with good commentary. He could probably do with a little more traffic on his site.

Interesting discussion and one which has been going for for centuries. The awful violence this weekend does not help any cause. The vast majority of people totally understand what diversity is and practice it without any problem. It is good that Mani can help any person get involve in cycling. It is a remarkable pastime to do, it’s healthy, you get to meet new people, you learn new skills, it’s social and it can help your mental health and wellbeing.

One question: Your Regents Park rides, are these rides on the public roadways or thru the park (away from road traffic)?

Our sport is white dominated.But what i’ve seen so far from our colored brothers(and sisters!) like the Legion riders
and african riders in general is actually pretty good!
Our rainbow jersey carries all colors,so should our sport!
“Our Sport” is dominated by white stuck up bike snobs who look down on all other cyclists who ain’t dressed in expensive Lycra and riding carbon bikes! It wants to get its head out of its arse and be more welcoming to all riders!
I know you mean well so be sure not to use the word “colored” when referring to blacks and people of color. “Colored” was used in the US during the era where Jim Crow laws enforced segregation of black people, who were treated like animals and even killed for daring to speak to a white person. It’s a word that has derogatory connotation in the modern era because it is still used as a means to insult black people.

Great video with you and Mani on top form; both of you are very eloquent. The police/cannabis incident was Mani is appalling. If it had been me then I'd have reported them or worse have started and ended a fight. It's a tribute to him that he kept his cool. (I'm a white Mamil).

I rode past these guys in Loughton the other week. A good vibrant group. As a young man of colour it was good to know this is out there, though I am not part of it it’s nice to know it exists.
Again, this isn’t about positive discrimination it’s used as a way of encouraging black cyclists into the sport which is very much white dominated.
