Great video,I am new to channel and very happy to find you .I am a 50yrs old disabled electronics Hobbyist now due to work accident so new channel are always welcome. Best wishes & stay healthy
The previous user of this scope was definitely oldskool,if you look at the "cheaterplug" that he used, that says enough. Everone knows these days that you must float your DUT and not your scope. The "cheaterplug" was in the old days how oldskool technicians protect there scopes, but that left the metal chassis of the scope ungrounded and can cause a electrical hazard when the chassis becomes live. Also, safetycaps on the input of the scope, will leak a certain amount of mains voltage to the chassis, and to the negative part of the BNC connectors on the front of the scope. This leakage can sometimes be up to 50% of mains voltage. When dealing with sensitive circuits, this mains leakage can cause damage to your sensitive circuits.
Nice Job Jared, that was dirty, nice cleaning ..Upgrade indeed easy peasy . now you need to build your DOS PC and Calibrate it with FAS when your ISA card comes in, so you can use the full 2 GS/s .. then all the ADC's need to be in sync.
Thanks for your efforts to share with us = m-u-c-h appreciated. Let's not forget that the real fix was just replacing a super-cheap diode = woot = that's gotta feel really good! I am sure you know these two cleaning tips, but for those that do not... You can remove the smell with ozone... If you do not have a generator, ozone is even sold in a can (or, it used to be.) IIRC, the cans could be found in automotive parts stores. Remove the top of the can. Put the plastic parts and the topless can in an air tight/Zip-Lock bag, force the air out of it and zip it closed. Press the valve cap through the plastic to fill the bag with ozone. Then, wait a day, or two, before removing the parts. Work outdoors and don't inhale the fumes. But, one trick to it is that you must remove every bit of dirt/ash/dust/oily residue, because it will hold the smell. You can restore the color of the plastics with a process called "RetroBright/RetroBrite." I am just learning about this, but it does not seem to be a cleaning product, so much as a cleaning process... Put the plastic parts into a clear container and fill it with high-percentage Hydrogen Peroxide (12%, or better, I think.) Then, shine a UV lamp on it. The UV light seems to be the trick. Search TH-cam for videos on both cleaning processes. I am not responsible for anything, if you attempt this. NFM, I can't believe your wife let you put the plastics into the dishwasher! You are a brave man, to tread those waters... For those who also dare to do this, do not add liquid dish soap to the machine, just use the regular dishwasher machine soap. Proper dishwasher detergent will not suds up. Liquid dish soap will and it will literally fill your kitchen with suds. Cheers!
I actually used 6% hydrogen peroxide held at 50°c under UV LED's for a few hours on the smaller plastics after the dishwasher. Also, don't tell my wife! 😂
I don’t know if you’ll see this, but I’m going to be fixing up a tek 2465b soon and it’s missing some knobs. I’m wondering if you know a source for getting tek scope bits and bobs like that? It’s alright if not. Thanks for the great video!
It will remain in calibration up to about 500MHz where it was previously calibrated, beyond that it is up to the luck of the draw.... :) It probably wouldn't be too far out, and would still show the waveform fine as long as you don't do any critical measurements from it.
I think some Yaesu Engineers must have deflected to Tektronix or vice versa. Remove few parts, have more functions :-) I wonder if the TDS1002 can be modded and what efforts one has to put in it
That was disgusting. I buy a lot at auctions and I’ve realized that you can tell immediately what kind of place it was. Either everything is pristine and well maintained or it’s grungy and beat up.
Yeah, I knew this one was a bit gross, but the pictures didn't do it justice. It was way worse than I ecpected, but at least it came up good in the end.
Any you can afford, it's hard to go wrong with Tektronix. Head over to the eevblog forums and make a thread there asking for recommendations, with your budget and what you'll use it for. You'll get a shortlist of scopes to check out before long.
I buy most of my used gear from Yahoo Auctions, but I do find some gear just by wandering around and poking my nose into various junk stores in Akihabara.
nice 1ghz upgrade, where is the part where the callibration is hown, I own a tds744a and want to upgrade proper with callibration, can you give a link? 73 jac pe1kxh
I'm currently collecting the parts to do a calibration, I'll upload a video at that time. Here is another good video that should help get you going: th-cam.com/video/wSqTj4gGCJU/w-d-xo.html
Why You talk so much about nicotine? (You were probably smoking like a steam locomotive a few years ago and now you pretend to be holier than the Pope...) Is it an anti-smoking ad or a clip about the scope service? Wouldn't it be easier simply to disassemble the casing and external elements, knobs, buttons, etc., throw it all into the dishwasher and after an hour take it out clean, smelling like it came straight from the factory?
To attribute the discolouration, stickiness etc. to nicotine is unscientific and betrays an irrational anti-smoking bias. Who knows what sort of environment the device was in over its lifetime e.g. an urban area with significant air pollution, a factory etc. And to suggest that you are going to get addicted to nicotine simply by touching it is ludicrous. Equivalently, to suggest that it was unsafe to touch before cleaning is equally ludicrous.
Ok smoker. If you are so triggered over my comments on a nicotine stained oscilloscope that stank like an ashtray, the result of a disgusting self-destructive habit, then you are in serious need of some self reflection. I hope you have a day that is as nice as you are.
It doesnt take a mass spectrometer to determine the stench, discoloration, and chemical deposits burning tobacco creates on equipment, furnishings, appliances and automobile interiors, let alone the skin and lungs of the smoker. Its a filthy habit and smokers are generally rude individuals.
@@Destroy_Communism "Smokers are generally rude individuals". I know many smokers and ex-smokers and my experience is that there is no correlation between rudeness and smoking. However, I have sometimes encountered radical anti-smokers like yourself and my experience has been that they are both rude and intolerant.

Real beauty of a clean-up job! Sometimes it's even more satisfying than a tricky repair!
Yeah, I was really happy how clean it came up. :)
Nice cleaning and upgrading. What a beauty
Yeah, it came up really nice. And as a bonus, all the cigarette stank is gone, no more smell.🙂

That’s how a real man’s scope looks
Impressive work. Can TDS620A be upgrade to 1GHz the same way?

Clever work :)
"mechanical sympathy" 😅 that's the most engineering term for "care" I've heard
This is really nice! If you did the hack without the subsequent re-calibration, how far out of cal would it be?

Believe me , i stay tuned.
Do you work in the company tektronix, did you?
Nah, I wish. 😀
I'm just a bit of a Tektronix fanb01. Haha

@@NearFarMedia ah. So its kinda hard to buy if you're a tourist. Then again old oscilloscope are too big for luggage anyway
Maestro, is it possible to get 1GHz resolution from another 500Mhz unit-TDS3054?
I think it should be possible, but I haven't had one of those in my bench so unfortunately I can't say for sure.
They actually advertise non smoker user to attract more buyers.
So much nicotine on that I'm assuming you got it at an estate sale 😂😂😂
You sure that wasn't weed?
