    In 1971, Ali was separated from his parents when he was five years old. He was brought up by the Indian Army regiments based in Thang.
    Thang was seized from Pakistan as a result of the Indo-Pakistan war in 1971. It is 2.5 kilometers from the line of control. The area's population is largely Balti.
