A BUNCH of years ago I was brush hogging some land overgrown with brush and maple trees. I was on a Ford 9N with a six foot brush hog on the three point. I was on my second day of it when the whole tractor started shaking violently. I got the clutch in almost instantly and the shaking stopped. As I looked I saw a giant piece of steel flying across the field out the right side of the hog. One of the blades and separated and what flying like a ninja throwing star away (thank GOD) from me and the tractor. One of the blades had separated at the mounting hole and took flight.
When I got to wrenching to put the new one on I got a look at the mechanism. There was a disk, about two feet in diameter. heavy HEAVY steel. Attached to that were two steel blades that were 24 inches long, four inches wide, and one inch thick!! THAT is what came out from under there and flew a couple hundred feet across the field (never did find it) BUT, with a monkey wrench, and a new multi millimeter socket, I got it replaced and was back to destroying trees. (with a much higher pucker factor.) Make sure you have LOTS of clear area around you when that thing is running. It is really FUN mowing through all that rough stuff. Looks great after too. Be safe...

The mesh will be worth the money in the
    Long run over the years!
It holds your gravel from sinking into the ground as you drive over it. I think Dutch used it on his driveway.
The guy that helped us put our driveway in told us to get and it was the best advice we got. We were on a hillside too. We used it in drainage ditches and put rip rap on top.
You won’t be sorry! It hold the tire ruts away and the crowning on the driveway.
We were able to get it in large rolls but Dutch used some that was folded like a tarp.
I’m in Ohio we had the big wide long rolls it delivered.

Ask Dutch about the fabric for under the rock, he put it on the drive of the new property. He can probably tell you about it. Sucks that you were all geared up to work all weekend and it didn't happen, welcome to farming. Always have 4 or 5 plans because they all don't work. You will get it done soon. Some of those weeds look like what we call Teasel. Not sure what the botanical name is but they are a buger to get out of hair coats once the animal walks thru them. They just keep going deeper and deeper until they hit skin and keep going. Can create problems for longer haired animals. Some could be blackberries which I understand are a bear to get rid of, wouldn't know I pay good money to plant them here and they don't like the wind. Haven't managed it yet but I will one day.

Chad, ask Keeping It Dutch what kind of driveway cloth he laid down before adding the base rock to his driveway! If I remember correctly, he said the driveway cloth he used wasn’t cheap but it was worth its weight in gold because he did NOT use it on previous base rock driveways that he built. He DID use the driveway cloth when making his base rock driveway for his tiny cabin that he built. He used it again when he added more base rock driveway to the house he is building now.

The mesh is a 3M fabric product and works wonderfully. Need to make sure your dirt is free of divets before you lay it, I use pins to hold it in place then come over the top with aggregate, I prefer recycled concrete for a base layer then top with 2in limestone rock. The fabric is about $4 a foot and comes in 15 X 300 rolls if I remember correct so should be about $900 a roll. Seems expensive but it keeps the earth from eating your rock.

It will look wonderful when you get the thorns and scrub trees out. Widen out the driveway, and very nice. Always worth having a boomer with--you never can be sure any more. What a positive difference to get rid of the thorns and scrub trees. Someone else made a comment that the Eastern Red Cedar (Dusty Baker of Cross Timbers Bison) said it is an evasive tree. When you can do a controlled BURN AGAIN and get rid of the junk you have cut---the greening up will be gorgeous (I am a fire bug, so would have fun doing a burn!) Hydraulic fluid?

You should talk to Shawn (Dutch) he used the driveway liner on his driveway before he put baserock down. But I think it will help. Too bad the brush hog broke you were getting the hang of it. I think putting up a fence will keep the neighbors dog out. At least I hope it will. God bless have a wonderful day

I may be weird, but I really enjoyed riding along with you while you were mowing down all the “kuck” …. Hope there will be more videos doing that. 👍🏻👵🏻

What happened with that machine is something that would have happened to me. I know you have to be frustrated that you were not able to get those thorny bushes all shredded. I hope the brush attachment was able to be repaired & you were able to finish your work. My drive way in the woods was a steep hill & I had gravel on it. We sometimes had to push regular cars up the driveway but I had a 4wheel drive manual transmission SUV & I never had a problem. I loved the view from the cab watching that machine cut down those bushes & could have watched an entire day...As always, Rae just looks lovely. Is your beard scratchy? A scratchy beard can irritate a ladies sensitive skin really bad.. I like your beard trim.

If mountain ash trees are still available they are a really nice tree to have.

Native shrubs are worth having some around, quail, songbirds, rabbits, etc. the multi floral rose is invasive, yea, get it removed. Beauty is subjective, I know but, there’s so few wild places left. A different slant on what your options are.

I thought red maples required shade. Maybe I’m wrong. Love what you’re doing.

Chad, I may be wrong. I only got a quick glance of your oak tree but it looks like what we in the Pacific Northwest call a pin oak. The leaves stay on all winter turning brown. The new growth pushes off the old.

Yay Rae, I'm with you I want to drive it 😊 By myself though😂 that has to be a lot more fun to use on those brush piles than an old Farmall tractor with the bouncy metal seat that I had to use as a child 😂 of course I did get to sing the Green Acres song😂

Well, I got a good belly laugh over the ‘freedom candy’. That’s a new one. I will be using that for sure. I know you are disappointed about the skid steer. All this will come together. God’s got you in his sight!

In my experience compacted gravel works much better than fabric mesh. The mesh moves around to much with traffic.

Geotextille, it’s extremely expensive. Best thing to do is get rip rap in the wet wet bottoms. Then #2’s or 2” rock then your road base. (Rock/clay mix. Everybody calls it something different.

I'm in Middle, TN, so miles away, but looking at all those "thorny bushes" and they look like wild blackberry canes from here. Grew up in Pacific NW and they are wild EVERYWHERE! Especially when there's a lot of moisture on a property.
