I had a stereo like that when I was 16. My neighbor was throwing it away. It was a console TV with a tuner and turntable but the television was gone. My parents weren't too happy when I dragged it home but the stereo worked fine and had good sound. My parents wouldn't have allowed me to have a TV in my room anyway. I wasn't even allowed to have my radio on after ten PM. Compared to parents these days my parents were pretty strict.

Hey, thanks for the descriptive phrases! I answer to many names! I'm well aware that these record changers are in demand. Why do you think I saved the one out of this stereo? Next time, pay attention and you might actually know what's going on. And, BTW, I also saved the speakers, as well. I think there's some sawdust left on my basement floor from this stereo. Please tell me if you think that's valuable before I sweep it out in the yard.
I have a 1963 RCA console with tubes and turntable with Am/FM radeo. I put new tubes in it in 1992 and cleaned up the chassis. It has 12" woofers and 4" tweeters. It still works like a champ! I also have a 1964 Magnavox console with transistor chassis. It still works fine
I had a Lloyds am/fm portable radio. My mom bought it for me because I kept confiscating hers. From about age 11until I was 16,when I finally wore it out. Every night I used it for DXing on AM. Cheapish, but I gave it a real workout!!
I had already repaired a Lloyd's stereo console that has that turntable (BSR) jam! So, I had only used some WD40 and turned the turntable manually and the turntable has been fixed! This console has a beautiful finish despite dammage at its base!
My grandmother had every Jimmy Swaggart album ever sold. You can't go through boxes of albums at thrift stores and not find at least a few mixed in. That guy always gave me the "creeps". Always kind of reminded me of Jim Jones.
The Elvis record looked like it was the only one that had been played, the rest belong at a church jumble sale for someone to buy and give to someone else who'll never play them.
Speaking of Lloyds, i happen to own two Lloyds alarm clocks. One of them, i got from a thrift store for $6 and the other i got from a flea market for $2 They do have a bit of a cheap feel, but at least they both perform and work better than the crappy modern alarm clock both units replaced. Both have excellent radio reception and have a pretty loud max volume that either can be heard across the hallway when the alarm goes off. I'll probably make a video of them one day.
As for any of this middle class debris I've long been disinclined to do repairs on any of it. I recently dug out the equipment to troubleshoot a stereo for a member of a church for which I occasionally tune pianos. The member pleaded with me, and I looked at a Sears console with a big composition cabinet like you show here. The power transformer I can ball my fist around. I said to the guy after a brief examinating, "I can fix it for you for $350 MINIMUM. I would like you to take a couple of weeks and think about it. And after a couple of weeks don't do it!" He certainly recoiled at the figure I gave, and said I was right for him to give it thought. The console belonged to his recently departed father, and it did have some sentimental value. He waited only a week, and then called me back in. I did the work, collected the agreed amount, and to the best of my knowledge it still plays as well as it ever did. That's not saying much...
LOL This guy trips me out, I agree with him on the cheap crap. I knew that when I was a kid and i'm 39 now, I always steered clear of the cheap crap. Always saved for something good! Save your money people and buy quality!
JVC/Nivico consoles from the 60's have particle board cabinets that crumble but decent electronics and speakers. The one I have (4TR-990 Deluxe Solid State) has 8" woofers and 3-1/2" tweeters in acoustic suspension enclosures with felt sheets for dampening. The sound is actually very good and clean with decent bass and top end. Discrete not IC electronics too. They certainly don't sound thin and flabby like the 70's consoles with the speakers in free air like the Lloyd's or Montgomery Ward's.
I'm not a fan of modern junk, but the BSR turntable is pretty cool. Thanks to Fisher, the company thay made stereo amplifiers, consoles and receivers as well as this one. The company was founded by audio enthusiest and NY Philharmonic member Avery Fisher. He also founded the Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center, and that's what the name "The Fisher" came from.
Back in the 1980s I was doing tech work for 3 stores and a TV repair shop, and one of the stores was sending me Soundesign and RJMacDonald stuff for warranty repair. The repair bulletins for those brans would have recommended procedures that were atrocious. One that sticks in my mind was for tape record bias failure on cassette sections of several models of compact stereos. The procedure involved bypassing the dead oscillator and running direct current to the head coils for DC bias. Phooey on that; I never would do such shoddy work. BTW the store paid me for my work, but stopped doing service work eventually, because neither company would reimburse for the repair expenses--not one dime!
I love those 80s replica cathedral radios I try to buy them at flea markets,thrift stores and garage sales I modify them to be used as extension speakers if the electronics are fried in them. They still make great conversation pieces'!!!!!

To that console, I say Aaaaaaaa Men! There weren't enough gospel records and tapes made to overcome the devil inside. Ever notice the correlation between the brand of the console and the records inside it? Of the crazy number of Magnavox consoles I've rescued, only one had Gospel LPs in it, most have classical or "show off your stereo" LPs in them.
I have a cheap Lloyd alarm clock/radio, when I turned on the radio the display started losing power and then when I turned up the volume the display was blinking and the speaker blew
I have a Lloyd's 10 band radio from around 69 or70 and it works and picks up good. It is also mostly made of wood and all inside is so interesting. .I have never seen a radio with so much going on inside.
It has a cue lever and an anti-skate control. I looked up the cartridge model and it can track at four grams. Not light be today's standards; but, I've seen cartridges that tracked much heavier. And, this one does have a rubber platter mat.
I got an Emerson table top stereo for my 13th b-day in 1978. BSR TT ran a little fast and the Tetrad ceramic cartridge had limited frequency response. My parent's 1970 JVC console had a ceramic cartridge which ran circles around the Tetrad in the Emerson and the TT ran at the correct speed. Less distortion too. More thought put into all in one systems back then.
I have a 1976 Lloyds Montiverdi console. It has 8" speakers, 8-Track, BSR changer and the am/fm radio combo like this one. My is in considerbly better shape and sounds great for it's age. If I don't play the turntable for a year or two it will seaze up like this one. I have 2 videos of mine playing if you want to check it out.
I agree. Despite the sad cabinet, the electronics are superior to a current Crosley. Had the cabinet not been trashed on this one, I would have probably picked it up.
Candle made a good multiband portable radio in a black leatherette case that is worth bucks today. It worked on ac and batteries and had a four inch front firing speaker

I bought a Lloyds stereo/8track at a garage sale the right side audio was dead and it was playing two tracks at once with some tinkering though I fixed the 8 track and the right side audio fixed itself I guess some capacitors woke up.
Particle Board - really Durable stuff - Soaks the Humidity UP -like sponge!! BSR turntables -A collectors market for them - Thats surprising !! A DUAL turntable - yES - had a BSR once - tore it apart as a 13 year old!!!!!!! really wanted a DUAL.
Back then the electronics had more thought put into the design whereas in the 70's they started using ICs so much of the electronic design was already done for them. And K-Mart and Montgomery Ward's with their flimsy speakers in free air with no thought put into the acoustics of the cabinet. I've heard much better from consoles like mine with it's speakers being acoustic suspension and excellent ceramic pickup TT. Later ceramic pickups had limited frequency response.
found a console dumped out on its back behind a flea mkt....flipped it over and got the speakers out of it. 12"magnavox with horn tweeters in a Styrofoam box. electronic was solid state so I left it. hooked the speakers up at homeand they work fine.
+childofgod140 Actually, if you look closely, most (if not all) of the records HAVE been opened. They have been opened carefully so as to keep the outer shrink wrap intact. The outer shrink wrap serves to protect the cover from wear and tear. Outer sleeves can be purchased to protect records that have had their outer shrink wrap removed.
It might have survived, had they made the whole thing out of plastic. Of course, it would have then rattled like a son of a gun while it was playing. I had a cheap GE console that was mostly plastic and it had a bad rattle while it played.

I suspect that water did as much damage to that fine furniture as you did. It certainly wasn't heirloom quality. But I have to add that most '60s consoles sounded worse to me than their '70s counterparts, despite more real wood in their cabinets and more substantial hardware. This was probably due to advances in speaker technology during that era and maybe the maturing of solid state tuner and amplifier technology. I'm going to guess that even those cheap woofers had cloth or foam suspensions, which were rare in the '60s. '70s consoles also sounded better than most of the "compact" systems from the same manufacturers, only because the giant cabinets made better speaker enclosures than picture-frame shaped shoe-boxes designed to look big from a distance. So they served a purpose in their own cheesy way. In fact, if I had to listen to Jimmy Swaggart, hearing him on that home-jukebox might actually be a relief compared to the clear reproduction of a real stereo.
+No Name Magnavox Concert Grands late 50's used 16 6V6 for grand total of around 100 watts. These stereos were bi amped using horns and 15 inch woofers. Nothing could touch them at the time. Early solid state were Germanium transistors. These actually have a "tube" like sound to them. I hate to tell you this, but until you start looking at mid to top of the line consoles, the same electronics/speakers were often used in both the cheap all in one units, or in the console units. 95% were still paper surround. Fisher, Magnavox (the high end units had sealed, air suspension enclosures. ), Stromberg Carlson (However S-C was a different animal, their units were designed to operate as seperate components in a console case. Their speakers were essentially stand alone and could be pulled out of the console and placed elsewhere.) were one of the few that used foam surrounds. It's all about total output amp power and matching the speaker to the amp. My 1963 Packard Bell stereo uses 4 6BQ5 for 18 watts per channel, but it also has the correct speakers. The stiff cone 12 " speakers are designed to operate most efficiently with the amp. This the reason why this stereo can outperform, with two speakers, those so called "1000 watt" home theater systems, it literally shakes the walls and can be heard roughly a block away when it's really rocking.
well you never heard a good quality stereo from the 60s then, they made some cheap junk in the 60s too. You can't beat the old Magnavox Astrosonic stereos from the 60s, we had one when I was a kid and that dammed thing would rattle the walls and had great sound.
This is about all I ever see, along with 101 strings LP's and Christmas music, at the thrift stores. They never have any good records. Many of these religious records were either given away or sold cheaply at concerts. One of those records was put out by a local church that's still going strong.
Actually, Zenith in the late 70's wasn't much better. My parents bought one new---the cabinet was as cheap as that one, including an all-plastic front, and the only speakers were dual 6x9's. No transistors to be found---Zenith proudly touted their all-IC construction on the control bezel
from the 70s weren't too bad, but I agree with the ones from the 60s being the best. As soon as my Grandpa died, I sold the Crosley's. I didn't want them, and certainly wasn't going to use them, I'm interested in old stuff only. I can't wait until I get a decent video camera so I can upload video's of the Imperial Maganavox. I tell everyone, if you want a good quality console stereo, go with a Magnavox from the early to mid 60s
Save the BSR changer , these woks well and are built solid , yours just needs to be unseized and new grease . If you don't want to keep the BSR sold it on line , there certainly a collector man as me who wants to by it to rescue a vintage stereo , you'rs looks very clean ( no scrathes on the paint ) , It desserve to have a second life .
ive got a old console radio ive had forever n ive never heard of the brand its 1964 least thats what the paper work says it was bought its a Pencrest its a full tube set n like u said the old console radios will stand the test of time i lost count of the tickets i got cause of it the odd thing bout it has 2 oval 12 inch subs n there 3 way tri power speakers theres no external tweaters there all built into the 4 12 inch oval subs any help id be greatfull for
I recently got my 1968 Ampex Micro 85 cassette recorder at a yard sale for free, I was trying to get it working and get it restored, but it was too late. It happened earlier tonight and I was so disappointed that my staff and the house manager got crazy and ends up with an attitude and then, one of the staff took it and threw it in the dumpster while heading out to Shop Rite. I was very upset, and now, my Ampex Micro 85 cassette recorder is now EOL. I also got shocked and and what happened is that I cannot plug it in while is fixing, but that causes a fire hazard and ends up getting an electrical shock. That means, I'm not going to any of the yard sales to buy worthless vintage audio junk ever again for free. I have other stuff that still works to this day. So I will not going to buy it ever again. I have EOL any of the item that is not working anymore for many years now, but the Ampex Micro 85 is no more.
I wish this had been a Magnavox. Even a mid '70's Magnavox would have been better than this one! Had this been a Maggie in decent shape, you wouldn't have seen it suffer the same fate as this Lloyd's.
Hey Radiotvphononut, when you say these used cheap electronics, where about were they imported from, China, Japan? In which case what do you think about the Japanese made stereos themselves such as Sony, Denon, JVC , Hitachi and others? didn't know they were making stuff out of MDF in the 70s I wasn't exposed to 70s stuff much, and in Britain these consoles weren't as common around where I live, atleast not that I saw , there weren't many who had them, still think they look ok from the front, even this cheap pile a sh'te.
I have the same changer in my table top model of the same quality. It is basicly held together by hot glue. I have had to work alot on basicly every part of it. Mechanicly and electricly. It was a fun project and I actually use it. Have to agree. All of those are a piece of junk.
Lloyds was one of the cheaper brands. That being said, it's MDF board. Commonly used for all sorts of cabinets including arcade. This unit is crumbling because it has water damage. Still, not worth effort to save.
its not MDF that's a better material but still suffers badly at the slightest bit of damp its like a sponge this is made from chipboard which is what a dog leaves behind after its been eating wood left in neat piles dried out you can shape it into whatever planks you need its crap board
I agree its much stronger I have TV cabinet made from it and it takes varnish very well but untreated it soaks up water like a sponge, pity about the cabinet on those old stereos if it was made of real wood and had some quality electronics in it it would be much better

Those Album Covers had great Graphics /Photos (much like a lot of Country stuff from the 60,s GREAT GLOSSY PHOTOGRAPHY/SPLASHY COLORS!!!!!) - But as for the Music - Blah, Blah ,Blah -- Iam not much of a Gospel Fan myself -only Elvis or Black Gospel singers had any real Drive ~Talent in that Department .

Lloyds was sold in Canada, they went under in the 80s. Mostly cheap stuff. We had candle too. The joke was I walked by it and it blew out

BSRs maybe robust, they're not the best on performance, I now play my 78s on a DJ tt an AT-LP120

You should save the 8 track player and the radio. You could probably fix the belt.

n each speaker has has its on sepreate inclosure i can make things fall off shelfs in the front of the house with it n its also got a tube warmer i know cause theres a switch on the radio n it has a pilot light on the bottom of the unit

I bought a Lloyds stereo/8track at a garage sale the right side audio was dead and it was playing two tracks at once with some tinkering though I fixed the 8 track and the right side audio fixed itself I guess some capacitors woke up.
Particle Board - really Durable stuff - Soaks the Humidity UP -like sponge!! BSR turntables -A collectors market for them - Thats surprising !! A DUAL turntable - yES - had a BSR once - tore it apart as a 13 year old!!!!!!! really wanted a DUAL.

I sold a ton of Morse consoles back in the day. Same particle board.
Back then the electronics had more thought put into the design whereas in the 70's they started using ICs so much of the electronic design was already done for them. And K-Mart and Montgomery Ward's with their flimsy speakers in free air with no thought put into the acoustics of the cabinet. I've heard much better from consoles like mine with it's speakers being acoustic suspension and excellent ceramic pickup TT. Later ceramic pickups had limited frequency response.

found a console dumped out on its back behind a flea mkt....flipped it over and got the speakers out of it. 12"magnavox with horn tweeters in a Styrofoam box. electronic was solid state so I left it. hooked the speakers up at homeand they work fine.

+childofgod140 Actually, if you look closely, most (if not all) of the records HAVE been opened. They have been opened carefully so as to keep the outer shrink wrap intact. The outer shrink wrap serves to protect the cover from wear and tear. Outer sleeves can be purchased to protect records that have had their outer shrink wrap removed.
It might have survived, had they made the whole thing out of plastic. Of course, it would have then rattled like a son of a gun while it was playing. I had a cheap GE console that was mostly plastic and it had a bad rattle while it played.

I suspect that water did as much damage to that fine furniture as you did. It certainly wasn't heirloom quality. But I have to add that most '60s consoles sounded worse to me than their '70s counterparts, despite more real wood in their cabinets and more substantial hardware. This was probably due to advances in speaker technology during that era and maybe the maturing of solid state tuner and amplifier technology. I'm going to guess that even those cheap woofers had cloth or foam suspensions, which were rare in the '60s. '70s consoles also sounded better than most of the "compact" systems from the same manufacturers, only because the giant cabinets made better speaker enclosures than picture-frame shaped shoe-boxes designed to look big from a distance. So they served a purpose in their own cheesy way. In fact, if I had to listen to Jimmy Swaggart, hearing him on that home-jukebox might actually be a relief compared to the clear reproduction of a real stereo.
+No Name Magnavox Concert Grands late 50's used 16 6V6 for grand total of around 100 watts. These stereos were bi amped using horns and 15 inch woofers. Nothing could touch them at the time. Early solid state were Germanium transistors. These actually have a "tube" like sound to them. I hate to tell you this, but until you start looking at mid to top of the line consoles, the same electronics/speakers were often used in both the cheap all in one units, or in the console units. 95% were still paper surround. Fisher, Magnavox (the high end units had sealed, air suspension enclosures. ), Stromberg Carlson (However S-C was a different animal, their units were designed to operate as seperate components in a console case. Their speakers were essentially stand alone and could be pulled out of the console and placed elsewhere.) were one of the few that used foam surrounds.
It's all about total output amp power and matching the speaker to the amp. My 1963 Packard Bell stereo uses 4 6BQ5 for 18 watts per channel, but it also has the correct speakers. The stiff cone 12 " speakers are designed to operate most efficiently with the amp. This the reason why this stereo can outperform, with two speakers, those so called "1000 watt" home theater systems, it literally shakes the walls and can be heard roughly a block away when it's really rocking.
well you never heard a good quality stereo from the 60s then, they made some cheap junk in the 60s too. You can't beat the old Magnavox Astrosonic stereos from the 60s, we had one when I was a kid and that dammed thing would rattle the walls and had great sound.

This is about all I ever see, along with 101 strings LP's and Christmas music, at the thrift stores. They never have any good records. Many of these religious records were either given away or sold cheaply at concerts. One of those records was put out by a local church that's still going strong.
Actually, Zenith in the late 70's wasn't much better. My parents bought one new---the cabinet was as cheap as that one, including an all-plastic front, and the only speakers were dual 6x9's. No transistors to be found---Zenith proudly touted their all-IC construction on the control bezel

from the 70s weren't too bad, but I agree with the ones from the 60s being the best. As soon as my Grandpa died, I sold the Crosley's. I didn't want them, and certainly wasn't going to use them, I'm interested in old stuff only. I can't wait until I get a decent video camera so I can upload video's of the Imperial Maganavox. I tell everyone, if you want a good quality console stereo, go with a Magnavox from the early to mid 60s
Save the BSR changer , these woks well and are built solid , yours just needs to be unseized and new grease . If you don't want to keep the BSR sold it on line , there certainly a collector man as me who wants to by it to rescue a vintage stereo , you'rs looks very clean ( no scrathes on the paint ) , It desserve to have a second life .

ive got a old console radio ive had forever n ive never heard of the brand its 1964 least thats what the paper work says it was bought its a Pencrest its a full tube set n like u said the old console radios will stand the test of time i lost count of the tickets i got cause of it the odd thing bout it has 2 oval 12 inch subs n there 3 way tri power speakers theres no external tweaters there all built into the 4 12 inch oval subs any help id be greatfull for
I recently got my 1968 Ampex Micro 85 cassette recorder at a yard sale for free, I was trying to get it working and get it restored, but it was too late. It happened earlier tonight and I was so disappointed that my staff and the house manager got crazy and ends up with an attitude and then, one of the staff took it and threw it in the dumpster while heading out to Shop Rite. I was very upset, and now, my Ampex Micro 85 cassette recorder is now EOL. I also got shocked and and what happened is that I cannot plug it in while is fixing, but that causes a fire hazard and ends up getting an electrical shock. That means, I'm not going to any of the yard sales to buy worthless vintage audio junk ever again for free. I have other stuff that still works to this day. So I will not going to buy it ever again. I have EOL any of the item that is not working anymore for many years now, but the Ampex Micro 85 is no more.
I wish this had been a Magnavox. Even a mid '70's Magnavox would have been better than this one! Had this been a Maggie in decent shape, you wouldn't have seen it suffer the same fate as this Lloyd's.
Hey Radiotvphononut, when you say these used cheap electronics, where about were they imported from, China, Japan? In which case what do you think about the Japanese made stereos themselves such as Sony, Denon, JVC , Hitachi and others? didn't know they were making stuff out of MDF in the 70s I wasn't exposed to 70s stuff much, and in Britain these consoles weren't as common around where I live, atleast not that I saw , there weren't many who had them, still think they look ok from the front, even this cheap pile a sh'te.
have turntables from the 40 50 and they are the best
I have the same changer in my table top model of the same quality. It is basicly held together by hot glue. I have had to work alot on basicly every part of it. Mechanicly and electricly. It was a fun project and I actually use it. Have to agree. All of those are a piece of junk.

Lloyds was one of the cheaper brands.
That being said, it's MDF board. Commonly used for all sorts of cabinets including arcade. This unit is crumbling because it has water damage.
Still, not worth effort to save.
its not MDF that's a better material but still suffers badly at the slightest bit of damp its like a sponge this is made from chipboard which is what a dog leaves behind after its been eating wood left in neat piles dried out you can shape it into whatever planks you need its crap board

I agree its much stronger I have TV cabinet made from it and it takes varnish very well but untreated it soaks up water like a sponge, pity about the cabinet on those old stereos if it was made of real wood and had some quality electronics in it it would be much better

Best place for that load of old......is recycling! Note that most are still in plastic film. Owner must have got them as gifts and not liked them.
Lloyd's was always junk I remember when I was a child the advertising for them in magazines directed at old people.
