Back in school for my end project I made a PRTG server for monitoring and it certainly was a game changer to have such monitoring. One night I thought I'd just quickly do something for my endwork, I check the PRTG server and instantly could see that 1 of our servers was messed up big time. (Had an absolutely clueless teammate). He ended up getting 3 folders on a server with an infinite loop of more folders within them. Inspecting element 1 folder could say it contains like 1234 folders and 426 files, then checking 1 folder deeper it could say 7325 folders and 9423 files. Folder names were too big to be deleted and it fully filled the harddrive to the very last bit. Not only that, it escaped the VM and filled the entire physical machines storage. The same machine where my classmates and another class also had their endwork VM's on so it was a big issue that I spent 2 hours that night at midnight together with a teacher to fix. Spotting this issue early on and getting it fixed before anybody else suffered from it was 100% because of monitoring.

On top of the physical I have a ton of VMs. 6 For kubernetes so I could learn how to build out an HA Cluster, I have 3 VMs for windows server (Root CA, Intermediate CA, and AD) I have my media server, a docker host, a Wazuh cluster, an opensearch cluster, I have an ansible server, I have graylog running, E-mail Server, DNS server (Bind Primary w/ Pihole as secondary) I have My raspberry PIs as well running various other services. Each of these VMs / physical endpoints will take up a slot in WUG.
And this is a quite small environment you'd be surprised at how much a business actually runs compared to my lab. Also keep in mind that I work as a network engineer, learning new technologies and protocols comes with the territory and the best way to do so is to spin it up at home and use it.

@@maskettaman148810 devices is nothing nowadays. Even a small business use more than 10 devices. A couple of servers, a few clients, a couple of switches, a Wi-Fi bridge, a printer and a firewall. At least.

Prometheus, Grafana, Alert Manager and node_exporter (as the agent): also a nice choice. Definitely not for novices that want an out-of-the-box solution.

And when do you have to monitor behind a firewall? In Zabbix, Zabbix-Proxy is used, what alternatives does Prometheus have for this use case?

I'm talking about monitoring machines on a client's network, collecting all the metrics in one and sending this to Prometheus. How does this apply?

Chuck -- is there such a thing as "SHADOW" Windows running on my machine? Changes made to the computer, like disabling stuff in the Startup list, even putting new files on the hard drive, are all gone when I re-boot. Getting the BSOD... troubleshooting, but hardware seems fine. Virus?

Would totally use WhatsUp Gold, but 10 devices doesn't even touch one docker host for me in my homelab. Come on WhatsUp Gold, 50-100 devices is a better number. You'll increase your usage and adoption which could translate to professional environments.

i only have a poweredge r630 and i use the idrac8 build in features and the software bridge that is needed to get informations about the os and the i can sms, email or do automatic stuff with this and interact with the os and vms. idrac is nice but yea it is a dedicated hardware solution and in my case over 7 years old and things might be have changed with newer versions.
