اسماعیلی عقیدہ کے مطابق ساتوان مستقر امام اسماعیل کو مانتے ہیں ۔۔اس میں بڑے چھوٹے کی کوٸی بات نہیں ۔بلکہ امامت امام حسین ع کی نسل سے ہونا اور سلسلہ امامت میں بیٹا یا پوتا بھی امام ہوسکتا ہے۔البتہ مستودع یعنی عرضی یا مستقر جاری اور حق امامت کا نظریہ ہے۔۔ہمارے عقیدے کےمطابق امام اسماعیل مستقر امام تھا اور تقیہ کی صورت میں اس کی فوتگی کا زکر کیا گیا تھا درحقیقت وہ فوت نہیں ہوا تھا بلکہ سلامیہ نامی شہر میں مستور یعنی پوشیدہ طور پر رھ رہا تھا اس زمانے کو دور ستر یعنی پوشیدہ اماموں کا زمانہ کہا جاتا ہے۔اور امام موسی کاظم بطور عرضی امام یعنی مستودع امامت کے طور پر جیساکہ امام حسن علیہ السلام کی امامت تھا وہ بھی مستودع یعنی عرضی تھا۔اس طرح موسی کاظم اوران کی نسل کا امامت بھی عرضی تھا وہ کسی ٹاٸم بھی دور کشف کے یعنی حقیقی امامت کی ظاہر ہونے پر ختم ہونا چاہیے تھا اس لٸے اسماعیلی امام محمد المہدی کے دور میں جب امامت ظاہر ہوگٸی اور فاطمی خلافت قاٸم ہوگٸی تو کاظمی نسل کا سلسلہ امامت رک گیا۔اورمستقر امامت ظاہر ہوا اورابھی بھی ظاہر ہے۔۔جسے شیعہ امامی اسماعیلی امامت کہا جاتا ہے۔۔
