That first little speech....he was talking about himself. He didn't allow himself to mourn. Which is why he was so strict with Bambi throughout the whole movie.
Bambi's father was strict, because that's how he was raised, and he didn't know any differently! He was also taught to shut off his feelings, but he couldn't do that when Bambi nearly died after he fell off the cliff! He shed a single tear when he thought he was dead, and after losing his wife, he couldn't lose his son, too! IF Bambi died, his father would NEVER forgive himself!

Months later, the Great Prince takes a now teenage Bambi through the forest to a glade and tells his son that this is where he first met Bambi's mother and he was about Bambi's age. When asked by Bambi what he was like, the Great Prince replies that he was muck like Bambi. 2:40
The Great Prince talked and sounded more like a father, and the fact that he was a lot like Bambi shouldn't be surprising - like father, like son!

The Great Prince was an EXCEPTIONALLY good boy at the end of the day! He was loving toward his baby from the start!
Absolutely! He was standing on top of the hill watching Bambi's mother give birth, along with all the forest animals visiting to congratulate her! He didn't "miss out," meaning that he wasn't "in the dark" about the fact that he became a father! He ALWAYS loved his son!

After saying: "A prince does not..." he stopped himself, and it's possible he never said that again after Bambi regained consciousness, but he STILL had to train him to take his place as the new Great Prince of the Forest! I'm sure Bambi's mother was watching from Heaven, and she had to be frustrated!
Great Prince: "I was born and raised "the old-fashioned way," but I now realize that it's NOT always the best way! I always loved my son, but my upbringing taught me to shut off my feelings! I lost my wife, and if Bambi died, I would NEVER forgive myself!"

The great prince of the forest is very proud of bambi after he defeated the hunter dogs. (and i guess now the two of them are together like father and son.)
When Bambi was frozen with fear, he watched his father fight, and he followed his example, but he could only use his hooves, because his antlers didn't grow in yet! His father was always proud of his son, and he loved him more than anything else!

@@LisaKoffler True. Shutting off your feelings (even if that's what you're TAUGHT to do) is never healthy.

The Great Prince of the Forest first met Bambi's Mother at the glade in the forest when he was a fawn with eight spots on each side just about Bambi's age.
I'm pretty sure that his antlers were just starting to sprout when he was Bambi's age (Bambi's antlers are growing in that ending scene).
@@lucascrubjay1914According to the ending of the _Bambi II_ Trailer, Bambi asked the Great Prince of the Forest what he was like when he was Bambi's age with eight spots on each side before he had antlers. And the Great Prince said that he was a lot like Bambi.
