    We are sooo sorry the Golden Palace Seafood Restaurant is closing! While in Oahu, we appreciated the excellent food & service & almost every few days made sure to obtain enough take out to keep us going for a few days. We (& our family) developed a great relationship with the Lam family over the many years. Uncle Howard, his family & extended family worked very hard over the many years to provide the best chinese food to us, the community & tourists particularly my family from Australia recently. Sadly we will miss the good food & the warm Lam family. We wish them well, lots of rest & look to the future for Chapter 2 of the Golden Palace Restaurant.
    We live in Maui & had hoped to make it this month to the Golden Palace Seafood Restaurant but unfortunately a health issue prevented our travel.
    Good bye Golden Palace Seafood Restaurant & Good Luck to the Lam family & staff. We will miss you tremendously. Aloha!

    The reason is because people have this mentality that Chinese food must be cheap and it’s hard to keep prices reasonable with inflation. But it’s ok for other cultures food price be marked up and people would not bat an eye.

      Dim sum isn't actually cheap anymore and it's quite easy to rack up an $100 bill for 3. Also when it's like $6 for 3 piece of dim sum. There are many factors of why many Chinese restaurant failed. Another reason is there target audience are majority old people while younger people like to go to trendy places that sells cheap foods at a premium price just because it's instagrammable.
      Like you walk in a dim sum restaurant everyone including the servers are old Chinese people. You go to a boba shop or a Trendy cafe (HK cafe) you see young people. Also older people are very stingy with their money. Many old people just order a few items within their budget and sit there drink the unlimited tea for hours and chat with their friends because Dim Sum is about socializing and hang out with some tea.
      Also Dim Sum restaurant has a hard time sustaining itself because it is getting harder and harder to get young chefs to learn the skills that required. Most young people don't want to work in a restaurant and the kind of skills for traditional Chinese especially for dim sum restaurant takes years. Some of those dim sum chef learn the skills since they were children as well. It's another reason many Chinese owners retired or die and the restaurant is closed down because no one has the skills.

    It is sad to see the Chinese restaurants are slowly closing. It is not just Hawaii. It is all over the USA. I think that it is the high rent, high wage and high cost of food. How much can you pass down your customers? I can’t believe that just won ton soup now cost $9.75. Are these price for the residents or for tourists?

    • @CrimsonEclipse
      @CrimsonEclipse ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yeah, that's true. It's also affecting dim sum restaurants in Hong Kong as well where because the cost of labor is too high to substance for the amount of work and younger generation also refused to learn the skills to require to make dim sum because it's labor intensive and takes a lot of time. Many cooking skills are lost because it's not worth younger generation to learn to make a living. Many newer dim sum restaurant gets their dim sum frozen from factories now a days instead of making them so the quality isn't there as well.

      Yeah, 2nd generation chinese American probably don’t want to take over parents’ restaurant business. Also, Chinese parents also prefer their children to be doctors/ lawyers/engineers.

    • @CoolNumber1
      @CoolNumber1 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not the reason, most of the chinese children stop inheriting their father's cooking because apprently, being chinese is a shame in America, so they have to act white in order to be accepted.

    There closing thanks to many many factors,
    they won't say it on t.v. but sadly this place we call Chinatown is No longer China town once you remove a stable signature place for customers that's been there for 20 years then it's not Chinatown anymore. I honestly believe part of it is the Homeless, the inflation of economic rise in price and lastly the crime in Chinatown has increased so bad, Chinatown is not safe to go there to eat and shop.

      I think it's because Downtown has homeless shelters and food and other services available to them so they just live there. I used to work in Downtown and there's so many of them by the Walmart on Fort Street Mall.
      City made an effort to kick them out of the area about a year ago, probably to promote tourism in the China Town area, and it was nice for a bit, but they all came back eventually.
      Hate trying to walk out for lunch and seeing some random homeless screaming at cars or human poop on the sidewalk. It's a problem

    a lot of these legacy chinese restaurants the owner for some reason don't like to sell to someone else or no one wants to take over.
    we know for sure a lot of the second generation or third generation don't want to take over. if you ask around a lot of restauranters kids or grandkids don't want to take over they have no interest in hte family business.

      Dim Sum restaurants aren't easy to take over because making dim sum is labor intensive and the banquet dishes require skills that take years of training. Many don't want to take over because they can't take over.
      Many new Dim Sum restaurants Don't even make their own dim sum any more and buys them from factories.
      Like many of the kids of these Chinese restaurant wants to sell but can't because it's not like a franchise where there is already a easy formula to follow. Most they could sell is the property if they even owns it.
      Also the cost of labor is so high they probably can't afford a professional Chinese chefs. Even the Dim Sum restaurant on Hong Kong are struggling due to labor cost and inflation and the lack of interest by young people, also most dim sum restaurant customer base are also old people.

    If you are working for the state. You will retire. If you own a restaurant for 21 years. You should retire
