This ending episode is everything, even though the entire anime is shorter than manga since a lot of things were cut off...
Then the last volume of the manga will come out in April.

This hurts even more after i read the manga.
The fact that kondo has fallen in love with her and tried so hard to keep his feelings hidden just to let her fly again and to pursue her dreams . Letting go of the person who accepts his obsesion with literature and loved him dearly, this is so damn painful.

Did it ever say that he was in love with her? I thought the show implied that he could be with her, but he chose not to, not just because he thinks it would be wrong, but also because he was more intrigued by her than attracted to her?
@@kingchickenwing4887 the anime covers only a half part of the story's manga, so in the anime they haven't covered the part where kondo is gradually falling for her and due to limited episodes they created their own ending, since this topic is quite a tabboo they might have chosen the safe route instead. In the manga kondo did fall in love with her as it goes on.
People hate this ending because they don't end up together, but it's called "After the Rain" for a reason, right? The intent of the story is right in the title.
The two did end up needing each other in a way, to realize what they really wanted. Tachibana learned the mental fortitude to stand up again from Kondo, and Kondo regained his youthful zeal from being around Tachibana. They both ended up pursuing their dreams.
Sure, it wasn't the romantic ending some were hoping for. Bittersweet, but still full of love. Beautiful.
I think there will always be time to find love. But never forget the love you have for your passions, too, right?

Most 17 year olds definitely haven't figured out who they are yet. They can very well fall in love at that age, but I'm sure someone in their 40's would agree that a young woman with Tachibana's athletic talent shouldn't push it all aside for a relationship that may or may not work. Regardless of how either party feels, he did the right thing to push her back on track with her dream. That way, in that time she can grow into an adult and understand the world better, understand herself better, and take her time finding the right person for her.
Love is part of the human experience, but she's gotta grow up a bit. Besides, they can always be friends.

I love this imagine-rush-hug ending. It tells how deep Mr. Kondo loves Akira. It tells goodbye and letting go. It tells both Mr. Kondo and Akira are happy with goodbye and start to fulfill their dreams on their own. It tells open possibilities they might talk to or even meet each other some time in the future.

Main difference between the anime ending vs the manga ending:
Anime:
Akira left the safety of Kondos nest all by herself.
She showed a lot of maturity and growing at the end by deciding by herself to run
again and leave the comfort of Kondos umbrella.
Their relationship ended in a beautiful positive note .
Manga:
Kondo basically kicked her out of the nest. Kondo ended his relationship with Akira in a very blunt way.
Even though I understand his reasons for doing it:
-He was falling for her,
-he believed that he was the reason she would not go back to her passion,
-she was getting too comfortable in his nest,
-low self esteem etc.
the manga ending left me with a very bad taste in my mouth.
I loved the anime.
The director did a fantastic job transmitting the soul and main points of the manga to the anime.
The BGM and imagery was beautiful.
I am going to miss this anime a lot.

I agree with u that his choice was responsible, mature, and poignant and I liked the way he confronted her directly about her running. I also admire the author of the manga for taking this direction,
but at the end I completely lost respect for Kondo.

the thought that cross my head was "wow what a loser!" I don't feel sad for Kondo, I pity him.
He has such a low self esteem that for sure he is going to say the same sentence

Kondo wants to push Akira to run and away from his life. Perfect! Confront her directly and motivate her and encourage her but

Six months passed by and he hasn't moved on, he still thinks about her and he still doesn't know if she hates him or forgot about him.
Akira is 18 now, she doesn't work for him anymore, she doesn't need his safe nest anymore, she is pursuing freely her passion.
So Kondo, listen, this is the right time to ask her to be sure if she had or still has true feelings for you. It's the only way you can moved on.
You and her already had nice moments together, you and her enjoyed each other company so Kondo do something about it. Don't miss the chance to be happy.
The Kondo in the manga is going to die all alone full of regret probably watching with nostalgia a super moon out his stupid writing studio.
And he would never know if Akira hated him or truly loved him.
Look, I have had a lot of relationships many with girls a lot younger than me(18+ though). Some of these relationships were good some were bad but let me tell you I have no regrets. I enjoyed all of them and I never pass the chance to find happiness with someone.
I am not saying that the manga is bad, on the contrary, I enjoyed but
the anime and the manga tones are different. I prefer the Akira and the Kondo in the anime. I loved the anime. The show really moved me.
I didn't read the manga, but i've heard the opinions of people who did and i loved the anime. I don't think manga ending was bad. It's bittersweet at most. It marked a new beginning, for the both of them. And it's stated that it was not the end for them being together, so there's that.

When you realize that the story is not about a girl fall in love in a middle aged man, but rather a two person with a great age gap found a helping hand on each other.
That was awesome, realistic and nostalgia. It is frivolous to doubt this anime in a first glance.
An ending with two of them getting together was never intended if you read the manga or watch the anime carefully. People may get attracted in spite of their age difference but sometimes letting the emotions go for a better future without loosing yourselves in a moment's flow is a better decision. That's the main conclusion of the story. What matters most is that they ended their connection in a positive note.
So basically the ending is (come see me when you become legal)😂😂😂

Layla S from reading reddit and stuff it seems that the manga ends like the anime. In the manga we get to know their decisions in life and more character development and the cast. The end of the manga specifically shows you what the main characters do, while the anime leads the viewer to make the assumption of their goal. Pretty good show though and probably no 2nd season which i feel most anime fans who watch seasonally should accept

The manga ended like 3 weeks ago I guess, Translation groups just haven't got to that part yet.. I think they're still at chapter 53 or so while the manga ended at chapter 82 if I'm not mistaken.
To beautiful!!! it's a shame about those people who attack against the mangaka, i want to became a writer too, like Kondo, and its necessary to learn one important thing: you must write about all you want to read, all you can love, forget the people, in that moment are just you and the paper, if you only write about what others likes, it would be a waste of time, and you'll be feel unhappy. Is this true? I've seen the contents of the 9th volume and it doesn't do anything to suggest that they "will never see each other anymore". Can you explain why you think this?
Thanks so much for the translation! I was staring at the raw scans earlier today and couldn't understand what was happening. I didn't realize that the manga implied that Kondo explicitly wanted to sever all bonds to prevent her from straying from her dream/youth. That's sad. I did notice that in the final chapter right before her race, Akira does think of Kondo and how he wouldn't be afraid of pursuing his dream anymore, and this gave her courage to win. Clearly Akira will not forget about him. And in my opinion, even if it's necessary for them to avoid each other now so that they can both move on, I think that in the future if they still remember the importance they mutually had on each other (which I believe they will!) then I'm sure they can reach out again as friends.
The other thing is that I didn't feel that Akira's love was superficial. I think she did "take shelter" in Kondo to avoid confronting her problems, but I also think she genuinely understood his character and saw charm in it. I don't know how else you would define love. BUT I don't think a relationship would be practical simply because they are at very difference places in their lives. But I think this type of "chemistry" and understanding is ripe for a friendship in the future, when both of them have moved on from the current heartbreak they both feel. This is my interpretation anyhow!

Binged this series in a day. I thought the budding romance was cute at first but I appreciated that the relationship spawned into a more realistic supportive friendship. I wish there were more scenes that showed Tachibana's transition from unrequited love though. It didn't seem like she was over kondo by the end of the series.

This was such a great show with amazing direction. This and Made in Abyss are what happens when the director+team of anime staff completely understand the appeal of the manga & what the mangaka wants to convey through their manga. Noticeably how the music composer created music tracks that feel so perfect for the anime.
I know nearly everyone is raving about Violet Evergarden's soundtrack (which is great also), but at many times the music tracks don't mesh well with scenes. Like the music is almost hollywood movie-tier with bombastic, exciting, loud scores but when they're inserted in scenes where nothing exciting happening it just feels kind of strange.
Anyhow, the director Watanabe and WIT studio really hit it out of the park with this. Shows that even though an anime studio can be really great at creating high quality looking anime, the director of a series is the most important to determine whether or not an anime is good or bad (like a series can be very well animated, but if the execution is shit, it's hard to call it good).
The story is about how unexpected friendship can reignite the passion u once loved. Im so glad i watched this and learned a lot in this short anime, characters was great and visuals too. It just the bittersweet ending is whats making me ache a lil bit
Message for people like me who cried so much and scream of despair to not see them finish together :
First, take a deep breath, it'll be okay
Second, tell you something, they don't finish together *for now* but they're in love, definitely, and they'll meet again in the futur, when they'd can accomplish their dreams. And finally, can be happy, and, together.

An underrated master peice
The story is as deep as it can get. I commend Jun Mayuzuki and the anime screenplay writers.
One thing is for sure Kondo and Tachibana love each other deeply regardless of whether they end up together in the future or not.
This is actually heart-breaking when you think about it.. I have a love/hate feeling for such endings, beautiful yet so sad

Given how japanese people feel about physical contact, I think in these scene we actually got to see them make love without sex. The moment she thrusts herself against him and he holds her back without hesitation shows that he understood that. It's so beutiful. I felt my own dreams flutter.

I just remember something though and its about the episode where he tell her that even if Akira and ger friend grow apart, eventually they would come together again, same goes for Mr. Kondo and Chihiro.
Given this information, I wouldnt doubt if in the future they come together, not as a couple but as friends. I havent read the manga but ive read the comments refering to it and Id rather be in Mr. Kondos position, been the one thats hurting to having someone hurt for me.

If you watched the anime and read the manga u clearly can see that Tachibana wasn't the kinda of person to give up on her love so easily so the fact that they didn't show the last chapter from her perspective too make me wonder on what really happened between the two of them cz like the Tachibana that i know threw the serie would actually make time for her job even with the training not quite it just like that .

He behaves like a father being proud of his child and saying goodbye. Good for him...good for him.
There's a telenovela called "Mirada de Mujer" (Woman's Glance) which has a similar plot but with inverted genre roles... they loved each other but he leaves to persue his dreams, and after they farewell she watch him driving in his car til' the horizon, but suddenly he turn running to her and kiss/hug each other, but just like Kondo that display of affection was part of her imagination ):, it hurts so bad.
Its not often I say this but i actually prefer the anime to the manga. In fact I really really liked the anime. The cinematography as well as music are amazing. The art style is visually pleasing and the characters are all so unique in their design. I also love the consistent imagery with the rain and how it gets progressively sunnier the more the two of them begin to heal. I love the story too. Most people think it's a romance in the sense that Tachibana and Kondo are in love. And while Tachibana does have some sort of affection for him, that is not the main 'romance' and Kondo never really pursues her. Its not something creepy. It's a romance because it's about two people who have lost their love for the thing the enjoy most. For Tachibana its running track and for Kondo its writting. Both of them stop doing what they enjoy and settle for less. And its referenced massively when they use the metaphor of the bird that was nesting at the cafe. Tachibana asks Kondo if a bird that doesn't leave the nest can be happy and he says that while some happiness maybe be found, that bird will always wonder what it feels like to fly in the sky. And i love that so much because it applies to both of them. And through what I think is a perfectly structured series of episodes, they each help the other to grow and find themselves again. This scene perfectly concludes that journey, with the two of them promising to do better and achieve their goals. I also like to think that in this version they end up together again after fulfilling that promise- if not in a romantic way then in a familial way. Because I for one found them a really charming match whenever they had interactions. And while I wouldn't usually support a relationship such as this one, its somehow executed and presented here in a way that makes it seem okay. They felt quite compatible. I think Tachibana has a sense of maturity about her despite some of her behaviour in the earlier episodes. And Kondo definitely has a sense of immaturity and insecurity about him. I think this is what allows their relationship to be balanced out and get away with seeming not as odd. Idk maybe its just me but I really liked it!
Shame it ended. It was one of my favourites in this season. Idk why, but this episode made me tear down, maybe because I’ve watched it after Violet. Idk, nonetheless it was great.

The whole manga and the anime made me go to full literature but after 2 years. Im writing a story and honestly in the manga, it made sense that there shouldnt be disturbance when writing. Kondu is absolutely rational on his decision to reject tachibana.

I hate older man - younger woman relationships in media because they're freaking everywhere, and done for no better reason than Hollywood producers' conviction that nobody wants to see an older actress. In most cases the relationships range from unnecessary to outright disgusting.
But I am a dedicated Tachibana / Kondo shipper because their relationship was handled with such delicacy, taste, and depth of feeling. If nothing else I hope they remain lifelong best friends after the events of the series.

Yeah, this scene was beautiful, but... I'll be honest, I wanted them to kiss. I wanted them as a couple. Screw what people think of the age difference, I SHIPPED THEM. Literally, this anime had pushed their relationship to the point that there would absolutely not be anything weird about it, in which Kondo wasn't doing it to be a creeper and Akira spent enough time with him that her feelings were pretty much solidified throughout. Just give me a confirmed ship, damn it :'(

I always know the ending would be like this, but still sad 😔.
Manga ending had Kondou rejecting her, but the director in the Anime changed the plot a bit and made it so fan could have their own mixed opinion about their ending because "when each of us furfill our promises" could have multiple alternate ending example would be, they became good friend that hangs out time to time, or they actually end up together when Akira get older.

this work of manga or anime shares the same sentiment and lesson found in the "Garden of Words". At times but not always, it is really hard to get back on feet to do what you really loved to do after an unforseen happened. Both works depictied that it's important to allow time to heal as cliche as it sounds and be nice to others as much you could both words and deeds; the truth is "what you see may not be the entire picture of it" , cheers.
Sometimes bittersweet endings stick with you more than partial conclusions. I could hear Aimer in my head when I read the final chapter. Kondo didn't want to kick Akira out of his life, but he had to in his heart. He made her choose her future rather than get roped up with him. Did it hurt more? Yeah. It had to. That's how life goes. Not every outcome happens over time. Life doesn't wait for you to make your choices.
In the end, what Akira truly needed was to be thrust out, with how attached she was to Kondo, she would have never left him. She would have never had a chance to live HER life. He kicked her out FOR HER BENEFIT. Not to punish her.
I’m sure Akira’s friend is very happy she joins again the Track Team. This is a happy ending because both of them fulfilling back their promises. And at that time Akira is finally legal. 👍 ganbare Tenshou!

Yeah in chapter 56 if you read the manga, Kondou admitted to his self that he is fallen in love for akira tachibana, but he didn't say it to her. And the last they see each other when it's winter in snow not rain. Kondou said that there are possibilities that akira might forget him (Kondou). And the ending is kinda sad because kondou had no heard messages, texts or letters from akira. 💔🤧 I know there are times that it's not about happy ending, and the come out will pain/sad. There's romantic love, then there's the sublimation of love into its many expressions. Why wouldn't Kondou be allowed to express his love for Tachibana via nudging her towards the sun then step away? This is the ultimate romance allowed to this middle aged man. Tachibana also realises her expression of love only causes conflict to Kondou, and she allowed herself to let go because she saw true happiness in Kondou when he starts his writing again, instead of when being with her. When Kondou received attention because of a stupid hamster, rightfully she was jealous, but when the 'other love' is writing of which she doesn't know nothing about nor can compete with, there's nothing she can do other than let him follow his passion. If you read the manga then all the support characters played their roles: Nishida and Yoshizawa showed how preciously rare love between 2 can be when the smallest wedge can cause it to fizzle, and how some can bounce back or be wrecked. Kase showed how hopeless a taboo love can be. His actions whilst uncalled for are nevertheless the learning of his own experience and wanting to stop Tachibana subject to the same fate. Ex-wife Midori showed no matter how intense, it can be fleeting (arguably when she knitted the scarf for Kondou, it was the same feelings), yet still leave traces.
I just want another season some like a special season or something like that, season when they are together and you know maybe marry or some together ending maybe... 😅😅🤭

Mr. Kondo liked Tachibana but was always cautious about his feelings.
At the end Mr. Kondo imagining the hug just like Tachibana imagined kissing him in the 3rd epsiode shows how he let go of his conflict and accepted that he loved her, to the same extent Tachibana loved him in the beginning of the series.
The Hug also contains a goodbye and thankyou in it.
Goodbye because we love each other but that's it. It can't go any further and now this is where our paths seperate.
And "Thankyou" for showing me my path.

I prefer this ending to the manga 100x. I finished the manga today and was devastated.
I would have LOVED it if the anime addressed the fact that Kondou also fell in love with her, though. And there were so many chapters I wished would have been animated...

I prefer this ending over the original one (manga), at least in this scene it gives viewers ,who wanted them to end up together, a bit of hope for the future to finally meet each other once they dreams become a reality. It's that one in a million bet but at least it's something.
Also, I liked how they hinted a Yui x Yoshizawa, given that in the manga their "relationship" never gets to be and Yoshizawa is then shown in the final chapter as a hopeless man who doesn't give a fuck about anything anymore not even his future/career.
All in all, for me this anime is an 9. Loved the story (despite the direction it took at the end), both art and music are amazing. I'm not a fanfic guy but If I ever read/write one, I'll start with this couple.
