If you like what you see and want to know when new videos are released. Please click on the bell icon. If you would like to support us [ www.patreon.com/Tats_TopVideos ] Nightmare House 2, Afraid Of Monsters, Grey, and Underhell are not on this list, mainly because they are mods and won't work unless you've purchased Half Life or Half Life 2 with the other episodes. Meaning the game won't work straight out the package, you'll need to purchase full games in order for them to work properly without getting texture errors or things not loading. Ib is not on this list because the owner doesn't want ads placed on his game, he doesn't want his artwork or music to be distributed. Find any lets play of the game and its pretty thin. It was originally on the list until we found this out. FNAF is a game you need to purchase. Midnight Game was removed off the horror indie website. Hotel 626 was removed off the web because of a stalker who hacked the website and phoned up people saying the game isn't over, after several complaints and lawsuits the game was removed. White Day is actually a korean paid game that was left unfinished and was coding to english but is difficult to get working. When we first made the list, it was titled Horror Indie Games, and we ended up with over 100. As time moved on, we had to sort out which ones were free and which ones were paid. In the end, the release date was overdue, tempers were running high, people were stressed and last minute games were added without consult, when the video was finally released, most of the games were put in the wrong orders such as Phobia, Imbalance and Insanidade, some descriptions were incredibly short. The House 2 and Free Ice Cream again, I don't think count as horror indie, since they are Flash Games. But this was our first attempt at doing A Freeware Horror Indie List. I hope we won't make the same mistake twice when we decide to do the Top Horror Indie Games, and Top Horror Games
Ok just calm down tats.... im watching the video without any complaints.... Although i'm not much of an indie horror gamer (used to be back in my school days in computer classes) I never heard of the Hotel 626. Calling people saying the game isn't over to hear them freak out... thats a brilliant prank. To bad it got removed anyways. Just keep up the good work tats....
Ah, so FNAF isn't free? Okay, thanks for clarifying. As for you picking Cry of Fear as #1, I actually am downloading it now. I saw a few things from the game from iTaliZorahFan's gaming channel (which unfortunately didn't last long), so to see it that high on the list was awesome to see.
I remember when Slender just came out. Me and my friends made a list of rules that was supposed to help us, usually based on the mistakes of other players: 1. "Jogging"- too many people lost because they ran out of stamina and were unable to run away when needed. Jogging was a technique used by the first youtuber I saw complete it. You were supposed to switch between running a few seconds and walking a few seconds, because it was significantly quicker than walking, and it didn't cost that much stamina 2. NEVER turn around- too many people lost because of the panic that struck them when they turned around and found out that Slendy was fairly close to them. 3. ALLWAYS, ALLWAYS check the building first- it was a death trap later on due to the thin corridors. If there were pages there, you allways wanted to get those first. 4. Turn off the flashlight if you see Slendy, and run in the opposite direction- I don't know if this is true, but it was rumored that Slendy doesn't find you that fast with your flashlight turned off. Optimal strategy for an encounter with Slendy was therefore to turn off your flashlight and run in the opposite direction 5. STAY ON THE ROAD- in a true Little Red Riding Hood fashion, you just HAD to stay on the path. Walking amongst the trees only got people disoriented and confused, leading to another bunch of losses.
2 minutes in, I'm going to take a wild guess and say that it's going to be 95% "first person where you walk around a large area with a flashlight while spooky things follow you around and occasionally show up in your face yelling abloogy-woogy-woo" games. It's weird that's become a genre.
Raysiclove I think you missed the point. Slenderman-like games are just not scary, there is no real atmosphere, no plot or any challenge in them and they all follow the same formula "throw together a flashlight and a spooky thing in unity3D and make player collect shit till something shows up on screen and screams". It just ain't fun.
It has become a seriously overused "genre". I used this list as a checklist for games to play, but every time one of them "jumpscare" games came up, I took it with a kilo of salt.
There are a LOT of free horror games about twenty thousand times better than Nox Timore, Evil, Illusion Ghost Killer, The Following, etc. that aren't on this list. Sepulchre. Hello? Hell...o? Dungeon Nightmares. Bunker 16, a game I would put in my top 10. Babysitter Bloodbath. Exmortis and Exmortis 2. All the Way Down. Hell, even games like Heritage, Purgatorium, I See You. There are a lot that could easily replace horrendous games like Life After Us: The System, which I'm in disbelief is so high on the list. Seems like you guys cobbled together mostly games that were played by horror Let's Players. (such as "Nox Timore" - a completely terrible game - ranked at #23?) I can't understand the reasoning behind so many discrepancies, like Evil at #77 while Phobia - an excellent game - sits at #80. The choice for Insanidade at #2 is baffling. It's not a bad game, but to rank it that high is incomprehensible. The game would max out in the 40 range for me.
Its like there's a "club" of people who make bad games that conspire with LPers to pretend that their games are good. I don't understand why people seem so mindless when it comes to this genre.
I'm glad Cry of Fear and SCP Containment Breach was mentioned. I haven't played SCP Containment Breach but I have beaten CoF once. I plan to beat it again and 100% it. Let me tell you, CoF will freak you out.
It actually the same. For example, if a 1999 game use mannequins in their game, it would be fucking scary. But if a 2016 game use it, people would hate it for repetitions. See, the main reason why modern horror games sucks is because older horror games has took 99% of all horror ideas and make modern ones looks repetitive. I'd blame old horror games for making this.
+Playbox Gamer I think it might also be the graphics, with shitty graphics there's a disconnect from the player and the game making it seem more foreign and uncomfortable, where the games that look like real life make the setting and the monster less scary by making it feel more human
+Yamin Rashid In my opinion, I think it's because games that are indie are usually more original and have more varied scares than Triple A titles. Because, while big time developers have demographics to please and can't take too many risks, small development groups or solo artists on the other hand can take a lot of risks. And quite frequently it turns out well.
Imagine a horror game where you have to make it through a gigantic, dark, creepy, procedurally generated Ikea without buying any furniture and if you get caught by the mutated, disgusting monsters (employees) you buy a futon or some shit and the more you get caught the more you get weighed down by the giant furniture sets until you can't move anymore and you die
That's literally SCP-3008, aka "A Perfectly Normal IKEA", except, when the IKEA closes the "employees" chase you and kill you. Also, there's no escape, and there are other people trapped there and you have to work together to survive. There's a game based on this, and it has multiplayer
Well, I know that I can never play Groundskeeper. The main threat that you're supposed to be afraid of just looks like one of the Spy vs Spy guys from MAD.
There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile. He found a crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile. He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse, And they all lived together in a little crooked house.
I just love how they are like "Check out these awesome indie horror games" and half of the games are explained like: "Yeah this one sucks, but try it out for yourself!"
I am sad by how many of the games on this list rely so heaving on what people (especially Creepypasta surfers) have come to automatically recognise as "horror". Settings, visuals and sounds are used over and over again across multiple games simply because they are an easy way for the player to recognise the game as "scary" without the game itself needing to put much effort forward other than present these things. Many of these games simply use what we have been conditioned to react to as a way to get themselves seen as being horror or scary. There is a reason why many of these things are cliches, granted, (like many people disliking hospitals and the obvious uncomfortable mindset being in an abandoned place would give you.) But the games don't seem to really do anything with these themes and elements, other than reproduce them. I find this very disheartening, as creepypasta and these particular kinds of games create a sort of self-preservation circle, catering to people who are either A: comfortable in being frightened by rehashed ideas or B: still in their early teens and eager to experience scares and settings they have not been exposed to until now. The problem is, this remains a self-preserving circle and never actually progresses or moves forward in anyway. The genre cannot grow, because both the game makers and their audiences are satisfied with repeating the same theme and ideas over and over again. That being said though, I am very happy to see MULTIPLE games on here as well that truly push the genre, and gives us either completely new settings, visuals and sounds to work with, and in this way EARNS their titles as "horror" or "scary", while others use the cliche elements, but handles them with understanding and proper application. I do somewhat wish the makers behind Tats would refine their own taste a little with making these lists, and not let something be included for its face-value cliche above other titles that are truly giving us something unique and memorable. I'm not gonna remember... ...*checks list* ...Cold Fusion for instance... but I AM gonna remember things like the Witch's House, or The Devil's Tuning Fork. Also jump scares are lame. I get a jump scare when my friend's cat decides to pounce on my head, but I wouldn't call him scary or anything to do with horror. tldr; being creative > using cliche
Games that rely on jumpscares to be scary can be kinda lame if that's all there is to the game. They can be alright (not the best games, but decent games) if they also have a good atmosphere and story. For example, games like Courage that rely only on jumpscares tend to get very annoying very quickly. Games like Nox Timore that have jumpscares and atmosphere, but pretty weak story just tend to get tedious. Games like Five Nights At Freddy's that have jumpscares, atmosphere, and story might wear thin as well (that's just in the nature of banking on jumpscares imo) but learning more about the story after getting through each level gives the player a reason to keep going.
Ikr? It's okay if horror games have jump scares but physiological horror is much scarier then a bunch of jumpscares, because physiological horror could stay with you forever!
Quick question: How many games were actually ruled off of the list for the sole reason that they weren't considered worthy of appearing on it? You've listed reasons that you ruled out other games, but it was either because they weren't free or some other reason that had nothing to do with worthiness of appearing on a "Top" list. The word "Top" looks like it needs to be removed from the list, because it seems to be a list of "Every Free Indie Horror game that we could find", and there just ended up being 85 of them.
I always love watching this video, it's definitely a classic to me. The type of content you provide is truly something that is hard to come by these days, there's a lot of hard work and recording that goes into it I'm sure. This may be an older video, but I'll never forget the video that introduced me to your channel and wide variety of lists. Thanks again for the good scares and interesting content!
+Hayate Tsurugi (疾風剣) I wouldn't say so. Jumpscares are the lowest form of horror because they don't so much scare as take advantage of the human body's natural response to sudden stimuli. The same response is given when you are falling asleep and feel a sensation of falling, a sudden jump.
Cry of fear is the only Shooter/Horror game that actually scared me, replayed the game 10 times and i'm still scared from tunnels where you start hearing banging, paranoia always gets me in there, also the soundtrack is amazing.Sadly Underhell deserves to be here. The part with the gasmask was annoying but the secrets in the house makes it extremely terrifying.
***** I don't disagree with you there, some of us can only dream of getting that many subscribers. But when you compare this channel to others - who are in the millions - it's a shame that this channel isn't up there with them.
i completley agreethis is ine of my fav channels they put so much effort in their videos they deserve more this way more subs idk why Rindezzy is being a butthurt lil boi but that sound like his own problem that i dont care about lol
Tats TopVideos when I Saw The Clown thing Running After U I was Like ITS Not Moving Its LEGS And I Was On A Hd tv I was More Creeped Out Thanks for this
Holy shit you remembered The White Chamber, I always thought it was doomed to be unmentioned. I loved that game. Also glad you mentioned the Yume Nikki genre as some of us get more unnerved by that style than by jump scares.
Galvatron The Decepticon However that's far more better than WatchMojo's instant countdown videos, most of their vids are reusing the same content or bullshits.
IamScared is by far the most disturbing game out there. I deleted every fucking file in game folder after playing it, just to find more files scattered around my computer. So fucking creepy.
Apparently, Forget Me Not Annie was a tattoo that the second person who went over niagra falls in a barrel had on his arm. He died in the attempt. The Annie referred to is the first person to go over the falls - cant remember her surname, but she survived.
From the classic-looking indie horror games, I love Nox Timore. However, Cry of Fear is one of the most terrifying games of all time and the design and the story are something what I can simply admire... (and cry of fear because of that)
Pause at 38:12. That little jumpscare is Nattramn from the Black Metal band Silencer. The dude is a fucking psychopath, what he's done is far scarier than anything in this list. Look it up.
+IAmWhoTheGodsDetest I was intrigued about this Nattramn guy. Upon looking him up, the rumours aren't true and the axe story was actually his brother Patrik, not him. Pretty grim story
This is an awesome video Tats, don't worry about those people who are complaining that their favourite games aren't on the list or that they think some don't deserve a spot. I really loved it, and must admit that you're the only uploader of countdown lists that I would watch an hour and a half list of.
OMG You guys have done it again! You've scared the living crap out of me and made me want to come back for more! You guys are awesome! Keep making awesome videos, PLEASE! :)
38:12 That's a picture of the singer of the band Silencer! Oh shit that's actually cool. His story actually is genuinely creepy so having the dude's picture gives me both excitement and chills.
Well, if you're a metalhead, it's expected, but if not, grab a chair. They say that in the band Silencer, it's a black metal band, and black metal is known for it's 'HOLY SHIT' moments. But they say while he was recording an album, In the song "Sterile Nails and Thunderbowls" He screams like, real screams. and they say that those screams were caused because he was slicing his own hands off while recording and replaced them with pig hooves. Then he once ran and stabbed a girl straight in the head with a knife and rode away in a bike. He is clinically insane. His name is Nattramn if you want the full story.
Most of this games were made out of jumpscares, I played a few. Jumpscares while scary for a bit, do not leave a lasting impression, sadly, this is the biggest problem with horror. Plus being followed only really works when you cannot see or understand what the creature that follows you is.
Aya Rita RPG Maker horror game such as Ib, Misao & The Witch's House have fascinating stories that will stick to your mind for a while; especially The Witch's House.
ohyesbenny I guess so. I played a few none stayed with me like off and Space Funeral and those aren't horror games. Body horror or jumpscares don't stay with me for very long. Symbolism and how it connects with the story along with some good writing and plot twists is what stays with me. What really scared me is the unknown not gore of most RPGMaker horror games. Mad Father was probably the closest to that, but it became too cliche for me after a while. I'm picky.
Aya Rita Sounds like you would enjoy Ib or Mogeko Castle. I have played those 2 games and I can tell you that they have minimal jumpscares and focus on story-telling through characters. Mogeko Castle does have a bit of Body horror but it is not a big focus in the game (the game is comical for the most part!). Mogeko Castle is very japanese-esque so Ib is more appealing to a general audience.
I was scarred as a child from watching Aliens, Jaws, and Jeepers Creepers from the age of about 8(?). The reason so many people are afraid of doing anything to mess with a persons mind and instilling true fear is because to do that anymore then you have to make something truly demented and would be shamed to the level that the game Hatred has been facing. Why? Because we are becoming more and more numb to such things.
Hey Tats, I'd like to say I love this channel, especially these dark top lists. Your voice accompanies these lists well and I thoroughly enjoy the content. You just earned a subscriber.
You have to BUY half life in order to play the mod, plus it says FREEWARE horror GAMES. Yes, GAMES, not MODS, plus you have to buy half life to play paranoia so yeah, not free.
I don't know if they count, but the Cube Escape series (+ Rusty Lake Hotel if it had been free) is pretty damn haunting. The eerie atmosphere really makes you feel like something is terribly wrong long before it actually happens, the fact that the games' visual-style is very reminiscent of a picture-book makes the scary moments even worse. The surreal dream-like sense of logic makes it hard to predict what is going to happen next and the jump-scares are properly built up and executed well which is saying something considering that I usually hate jump-scares. Some creepy moments include pretty much the entiredy of the "Fall-section" of Cube Escape: Seasons, the Shadow's appearance in the police-station as well as the Cabin in Cube Escape: Case 23 and a certain scene in Cube Escape: Birthday (yes, I know that this particular game hadn't been released by the time this video came out).
I have to thank you guys so much for bringing up lasting, it was a game I played a lot a couple years ago and I was trying to find it. Thank you for this!
I am really surprised that Dungeon Nightmares isn't on the list at all. It actually feels like a finished game which is more than I can say for half the games on this list. It had increasingly aggressive enemies, a randomized jump scare system, a maze that changed/decayed as the nights went on. And in my opinion, some of the best disturbing artwork for an freeware horror game. I get its a list made from opinion and such, but it's surprising.
great video this is a great list of horror games and im going to download them all thanks so much for putting this video together it must have took ages
Have tested No Escape, is really getting intrigued and am somewhat relieved that there is nothing that can harm you in the game. I kind off suck at survival-games but really like horror at the same time so it was really nice to have the option to just take my time exploring the dark hallways and letting the atmosphere sink in without worrying about monsters that is trying to kill you.
the owner of Ib wouldn't allow anyone to place ads on his game, or use any of his artwork or music, so you won't find many footages of the game being played online on TH-cam. But it was originally intended for the list, with a full script and everything before it was removed.
A creator not wanting his game to be advertized.........imagine if Nintendo did that. No, I do not mean like how Nintendo are anti-youtube, I mean if Nintendo didn't advertize their games at all.

Technically you can get FNAF for free via the demo. But i've only seen it on mobile devices.

There are a LOT of free horror games about twenty thousand times better than Nox Timore, Evil, Illusion Ghost Killer, The Following, etc. that aren't on this list.

For Free you cannot expect uber quality.
mike fox the ranking is what John is calling out. Not necessarily the fact that some of the game are bad.
mike fox That's not true. There are a ton of great horror games that are free. This list happens to contain a slew of the really bad ones.
I agree, John. (You're my favorite youtuber by the way)
"Puts you into a false sense of security, with its dark hallways and scary atmosphere."

We made a horror game whose title means "fear of trees"
What should we make the jumpscare monster be then?

I'm glad Cry of Fear and SCP Containment Breach was mentioned. I haven't played SCP Containment Breach but I have beaten CoF once. I plan to beat it again and 100% it. Let me tell you, CoF will freak you out.
Did you finish it
Most of these bring many memories of TH-camrs playing these back when they first started
why is it that low budget horror games with 1999 graphics are scarier than triple a title horror games
Yamin Rashid Good point, sir.
I have no idea
Imagine a horror game where you have to make it through a gigantic, dark, creepy, procedurally generated Ikea without buying any furniture and if you get caught by the mutated, disgusting monsters (employees) you buy a futon or some shit and the more you get caught the more you get weighed down by the giant furniture sets until you can't move anymore and you die
I like your thinking a lot
aktchually it already exists
That's literally SCP-3008, aka "A Perfectly Normal IKEA", except, when the IKEA closes the "employees" chase you and kill you. Also, there's no escape, and there are other people trapped there and you have to work together to survive. There's a game based on this, and it has multiplayer
@@antonhagbox02 Love the SCP Foundation.

I really like Witch's House, Slender, SCP: Containment Breach, and Cry of fear
Jumpscares can work you just gotta try.
Spooky's House of Jumpscares was scarier than the majority of some of these.
Dude... your profile pic is scarier than the majority of some of these
Games that rely on jumpscares to be scary can be kinda lame if that's all there is to the game.
You have good logic, I like people like you.
Ikr? It's okay if horror games have jump scares but physiological horror is much scarier then a bunch of jumpscares, because physiological horror could stay with you forever!
Outlast is a very good example of a strong story with strong atmosphere.
Dead space has some of the best atmosphere in a horror game, that's my favorite horror title.
That's what makes SCP containment Breach one of my favorites
I swear when you said Donald: A Horror Game, I thought it was going to be something about Donald Duck.
Or Donald Trump.

DioDidNothingWrong that's absolutely horrifying!
Quick question:
How many games were actually ruled off of the list for the sole reason that they weren't considered worthy of appearing on it?
You've listed reasons that you ruled out other games, but it was either because they weren't free or some other reason that had nothing to do with worthiness of appearing on a "Top" list. The word "Top" looks like it needs to be removed from the list, because it seems to be a list of "Every Free Indie Horror game that we could find", and there just ended up being 85 of them.
_Abby: Jurassic Dark_ is an example of a game that had it’s title thought of first, and everything else later.
I love how he says "eeevil"
Well, at least number 1 wasn't Slender.
MadmanEpic I know. I hate that game a lot.
Game wasn't bad, but it doesn't deserve to be anywhere near number 1.
I'd lose hope in the horror game community if it was number 1.
DeidaraWithHat I think in their original list for this, they put it at number 3. But I think they've been able to see the negatives by now.
Please refrain from feeding the trolls. They are below average intelligence and become hostile when poked.
Is it wrong if I classify the genre of jumpscare games as thriller instead of horror?
Not really
+Hayate Tsurugi (疾風剣) I wouldn't say so. Jumpscares are the lowest form of horror because they don't so much scare as take advantage of the human body's natural response to sudden stimuli. The same response is given when you are falling asleep and feel a sensation of falling, a sudden jump.
That makes perfect sense.
5 year old comment, but eh... Just because a horror game has a couple of jumpscares where it's appropriate doesn't mean it's a "jumpscare game".
Awesome list. I just found this channel and now I'm intrigued to see the rest of your videos while I procrastinate doing laundry :3

That's a picture of the singer of the band Silencer!
But they say while he was recording an album,
In the song "Sterile Nails and Thunderbowls"
He screams like, real screams. and they say that those screams were caused because he was slicing his own hands off while recording and replaced them with pig hooves.
Then he once ran and stabbed a girl straight in the head with a knife and rode away in a bike.
He is clinically insane.
His name is Nattramn if you want the full story.
He is now free and no one knows where he is, im a metalhead and that story is freaking bad ass
Im metalhead and i was surprised haven't heard of that band or the song so i searched it up and shit those screams sound genuine and just wow
Mogeko Castle is very japanese-esque so Ib is more appealing to a general audience.
ohyesbenny maybe. I don't know. Persona will keep me busy for a while.
Is it bad that I laughed at the end of The Witch's House segment (around 33:00), when the girl got crushed by a bolder?
Setriex yes it is
Setriex Depends
