- What is the best sniper rifle? What is the best sniper scope? How about laser rangefinders, bipods, ballistics tables, barometers, thermometers, GPS systems, infrared thermometers, and all the other long range shooting equipment? In this video, Rex discusses the hierarchy of long range weapons equipment. After the shooter spotter team, the rifle scope is the most crucial piece of equipment to get right. After that, you are free to choose from many different rifle options whether they be semi-automatic for designated marksmen, bolt action rifles for benchrest shooters, tactical bolt actions for military operators, or antimaterial rifles for hard target interdiction. Rex also discusses how peripheral equipment will be important to calculate accurate firing solutions out in the field. Stay tuned for our next video detailing rifle selection options for various long range shooting applications.

Psalms 144 written by a cool guy out in the desert way back in the day. Permission to use this quote from the Bible in order to communicate the awesomeness of being a peaceful loving person while yet being completely proficient with the art of combat in order to insure the security of the innocent we are charged to protect was given by Almighty God. I will go once I learn a little from the videos so I don’t go on level 0, you do a fantastic job Rex.
Your link is broken
First thing to consider is your twist rate. Once you know that, I would try to find a heavy bullet with the highest BC you can find that will work in your barrel AND that will still fit inside your magazine. Once you developed a load that shoots good, we will take all the data and make you ballistic tables - we will be covering this in detail in a coming video - Stay tuned! We are almost there!
Not quite yet, but there will be about 20 or 30 more of these coming out very soon - I am uploading the new segments as I make them. Just started posting these recently, I am actually working on part 7 right now. Stay tuned and make sure you are subscribed so when the new ones are released you get them. The next on eis one rifle selection, then I'll cover optics and then long range ballistics, and making charts, and range determination and tactics and everything else there is to know. :-)
Thanks Rex for all the help.I'm getting back into shooting after a 34 year hiatus.I've selected my rifle and cartridge and am contemplating my optics. 7mm rem mag and I'm looking for precsion to 800 meters, its do-able..You can shoot the mile,I'll be cheering you on,for your skill, common sense and humility.Cant wait for part 7, God bless.
Certainly will do. I am working on the Rifle Selection vids right now, the next one after that will be on Optics Selection. I'll cover that question in detail.
Thanks for watching, sir. I have not yet put together any LR course as of yet, but I was considering the possibility for the future. I'm not really that good of a shot compared to a couple of the other guys you see in these videos, but understanding the science of it all is paramount to success.
Thanks for the kind words. There are lots of great courses out there and plenty of bad ones as well. The big sniper schools like the one at the AMTU and the one at Quantico are very good for getting started. Most of the LE "sniper" schools are very very basic and might not be very helpful for anything beyond 200m. If you can get into it, the SOTIC is one of the best in the world. They'll teach you much of what we are going through here and much more. The civillian courses vary greatly.
Thanks for learning LR shooting and further strengthening our Great Republic!
Hmmm. Those silly turkeys must be up to something again. Someone else mentioned that as well. I just checked - and all the episodes are there right now. Feel free to upload these on to your computer if you think they may disappear one day. That's cool.
This course is like being in heaven! thank you
In very rugged or mountainous terrain, these can be pretty helpful. On flat terrain, it’s pretty easy to keep it vertically oriented.
Excellent! Debunks some common beliefs with great clear info. Just bought a NightForce scope when I saw the parallax problem in my current scope that would shift point of aim. Most people, including me, don't appreciate the importance of the Optics. They think a good scope is a nicety when in truth it is a necessity!
I just wanted to thank you for the videos you have out; I'm up to part seven of your series after getting frustrated on a few discussion forums while trying to set up a precision rifle. Your unbiased opinions and statement of facts has really helped me make some decisions. Especially the side by side ballistic comparisons you have in your videos. Thanks again for the excellent information.
Right on, keep me informed how it goes. If ya ever have any questions or suggestions for my vids, feel free to send a message. Peace.
gotta give it to you man, you are the best kept secret for shooters on youtube. Since watching you vids i have moved from avg 300 yards (while staying consistant) to over 1000 and still being able to stay consistant. Something un-thinkable 3 months ago. So THANK YOU for these vids.
Yes sir, The MSR is a great design. It sports a milliradian based main reticle with improvements like a new ultra fine L-scale on the side for spotter-like precision milling and a man-ranging scale for fast target engagement scenarios. Very slick indeed - for military applications.
Cool! We will do detailed videos on spotting the long range shot, but basically - you focus in on the bullet trace and observe the vapor trail of the projectile all the way to the target through the spotting scope.
Roger that! I've been shooting longer ranges on and off for a number of years, but going back and learning/re-learning the foundational material is great. It is an excellent series Rex put together.
Thanks man. CALC FORMS? Not quite yet, I will explain them in full detail before I release them. Hopefully soon.
Thank you for presenting this information in an easy to understand manner that is not condescending.
I wish I had gotten more serious about this long ago.
No, longer than that.
thanks alot for the feed back ill stay tuned
Thanks for the kind words. The 7mm Rem mag is a great choice and will go way past 800m if you ever need it to. Optics? My optics vid isn't done yet, but if you want to visit about optics selection for your rifle, please let me know - I'll be more than glad to help. Just let me know your scope budget and what you plan to use the rifle for and we'll get ya set up with the best value for the money. Peace.
Thats great! I hope these are helpful for ya. If ya ever have any questions, feel free to send a message.
Right on, man. Sounds like a nice optic set up. I'll make all the information available to you on how to get your own set of ballistics tables set up. :-)
I usually use a straight 20X, but have used everything from 20 to 60 power.
Howdy! I cover these formaulas as we get into each topic. There are so many formulas out there and each one has to be applied correctly that I must address them 1 by 1 as we go topic by topic. Is there any math in particular you are curious about?
A straight 10X MRAD based scope would be very good for combat or hunting applications out to 1000m if you want rugged simplicity. If you expect live contact at less than 200m (in hunting scenarios), a straight 6X would be better. For the $300-800 range I would recommend the SWFA SS with MRAD turrets in 6X or 10X. If you have $800-1500, I would recommend the same in an IOR Valdada or a USO ST-10. If you have > $1500, I would look at the variable USO SN-3 or S&B PMII with FFP reticule.
Right on, that Model 12 is a real nice rifle and should be able to get you out to 800 meters if you do everything right. Stay tuned to the series and we'll try to get ya equipped with everything you will need to know to dial that baby in where it needs to be.
Rex
No problem. Dude, you can put together a long range rifle set up for under a grand that will keep up with rifles that cost over $10K! Some of my cheapest rifles are my best long range shooters! My old 7mm mag was $250 and the scope was $299. It is good out to 1200m. Its more on the shooter's abilities to do accurate firing solutions and less on the equipment he has. Be not disheartened if you are on a budget :-)
Thank you TiborasaurusRex, for sharing the knowledge of long range shooting that has likely taken a great deal of time and money to learn. This is the best tutorial on the subject that I've ever seen. Once again, thank you for sharing this information with us. God Bless.
thank you for breaking things down to easy (ish) to understand segments. im also getting back into shooting after a very long lay off. i purchased two savage axis rifles (.223 and 30-06) i will be shooting off the shelf ammo as i dont hand load...yet. i need to relearn everything. i have not shot a scoped firearm before so im an old rookie. thanks again.
I am new to this and on a budget but, I really want to sincerely thank you for your time and effort putting these great videos together!
Put many of the old instructions such as a brush gun and field rifle. Like the old timers used to say. I knew it but didnt know why now I get a lot of the old theories. I have always been lucky when it comes to being a very good shot. With these videos I can now understand how to choose the package for the job instead of making visual and site alterations thru instinct and logic. Very well done My thanks
Love your videos though, well put together, and very informative. Every time someone asks me about getting into long range shooting your videos are one of the places I tell them to look.
Wow bro thank you for all your videos I am new to this long range shooting I don’t have no clue until now watching and learning from your hard work brother ty
THANKS for all this great info... I look forward to attending one of your classes...
Yeah, those 110 fcp's usually are pretty nice shooters. The main thing you want to get right is the barrel twist - First, pick a good long range bullet in your caliber, then make sure to get a rifle with a barrel that will stabilize it. I would recommend waiting on the optics choice till you get a chance to see my vid on LR scopes - optics selection will be much more crucial than your rifle selection for LR.
Peace.
If I had $2500, I would get an Armalite AR-30 ($1650) and throw on a USO ST-10 ($850). There is also a new Remington 700 in .338 Lapua that is moderately priced ($1600). That would be fine as well. Those would be the best choices for the money in my opinion.
Have you ever gave thought to publishing a book on all this? Or maybe even a few volumes? ;-)
No problem. Remember, 90% of long range shooting is on the shooter's ability to calculate an accurate firing solution and to effectively dial it in. :-)
love your vids shooting a savage model 12 in .223 with a tasco 4-20 power scope not doing any thing past 300 yards your vids have helped alot
If you have a dedicated long range AR-15 in a heavier target or varmint type setup, I would go for a SWFA SS10X. That would be your best choice. The Hi-Lux CMR might be my favorite budget AR-15 scope for a multi-purpose carbine. That will be great for CQB and will work alright out to 500 yds. Be sure to watch the Long Range Optical Parameters videos before you make your scope purchase. Peace.
I guess I'm not sure what you are asking... I am pretty sure all my videos are still available form my home page. Double check, sir.
The CRF1600 would be a great choice. These seem to work very well. You'll get good readings pretty reliably beyond 1000m with this model.
Ok, I understand. I have made it through the first 6 vids and am learning a lot. Just trying to retain as much as possible. I ordered the SWFA SS 10 fixed power and am just waiting for it to arrive. I think I've decided on a one piece mounting system and should be reading to zero it soon.
Earlier today, I wanted to view your epic masterpiece Sniper 101. I found one video. I checked your homepage and only 16 videos were listed. I have since found your magnus opus. Maybe it was a fluke. But, TH-cam has scrubbed videos before. Keep up the good work.
Well, given your particular mission criteria I would suggest a laser beam. The zero grain EM photon projectile will have zero inches of drop and 0 inches of wind deflection @ infinity meters. Your remaining velocity at any distance will be 186,000 miles per second and all with the least recoil of any gun available. Targets such as pretend sasquatch eggs and tomatoes are no match for a good laser beam - however photons are very 'light' and may not have enough mass to drop an elk very well.
Thanks for checking it out.
I am learning a lot from your videos but I am new to this for sure, next week I am ordering a savage 10/110 fcp hs precision model in 338 lapua I really like the terminal ballistics of that round and then will be saving money for a us optics st-10, your videos made me switch from a weaver to that. So when my skills catch up I think I will be good to go
The ST-10 will be a top-notch optic. We'll get you all situated and you'll be sending hits downrange in no time.
Thats the truth.
Yes sir, I have asked some questions during this series only to find out I would have learned the answer eventually. I'm watching and taking notes on each video. I kinda feel like I;m back in law school.
Awesome!
I was wondering about this form in particular. I watched all the videos, from start to finish and I managed to use my "grab it" to get bits and pieces of the form, but I don't recall ever seeing an explanation or a reference on where to get a copy.
Thanks for the quick response.
Gob bless
Hey Rex
The forms your using on the video look interesting. For instance the "Firing Solution/Calculation". Are these available to view or download?
Great Videos! I have shared these with a lot of my newbie long range Buds, everyone likes what your doing.
Thanks
Or perhaps a nice 7mm-08 or a .308 would work as well.
Thank you for replying. My problem is 6'6 and 16 3/4 inch length if pull. I don't have much saved up of a stock. I had been looking at the Choate or XLR industries. I don't make much at my job. So I have to save up for a little while
I hate guns im here for the cool music! On my mind rex love you brother
Hathcock used an M2 Browning for his 2500 shot.
Not nit-picking, just wanted to point that out. Great Series!
Yeah the videos are very impressive. It's a lot to digest, but I think I'm getting all the concepts so far.
Portability is really important. What is light can become heavy.
Dear Rex, Thank you for all the efforts you made to make these videos. I started watching them as I am planning to learn long range shooting. However in this particular video, There is something that did not make sense for me, If I will be doing all these calculations before being able to shoot the target, the target may disappear. For example, If I am looking for Deers, and I spot some on another Hill, I won't have the time to do all these calculations or I will lose the deer. the same thing if you are at War defending your country, an enemy car was spot and u need to shoot the driver down before they get so close to your location, there will be no time for calculations. I apologize if my question doesn't seem right. as I said I am just starting to learn but that specific issue didn't seem logical for me .
I could, but it would be mostly useless without the primary functions data sheet you need to develop for your particular rifle. I will go over this in full detail in the firing solution video. Send me a message...
Thanks man, love the series. Have a good one.
McMillan A5.
270 Winchester from Browning semi auto rifle BAR made in Belgium 1970 with a nice scope. My hunting rifle. I use iron sights when hunting. I hunt bush edges to field so a scope would be nice but i cant line up open sights faster than a scope. I checked out were the rifle is hitting at 25 meters and its exactly the same height as the bore to the sights , like .60 inches low. I didnt shoot it to 100 meters yet, ill do that when its not super windy out. Using Hornady 130 grains bullets.
Inexpensive??? I know may people who add or subtract to the length of the stock by adding wood spacers or cutting it down. That’s the best way to do it. Unfortunately, aftermarket adjustable stocks of decent quality aren't cheap.
great series at some point could you give detailed description on the difference in MRAD and Mil-Dot scopes and which one you prefer and why
That’s the same. Just different terms. It’s mills or moa
It is of my opinion that this man spent significant time in the Canadian services, either as an upper tier infantryman or as a designated marksman. This explains the accent and favorable use of the FAL.
Morgan Locryn And his freakish marksmanship.
This leaves the confused beginning marksman to go on thinking that as long as he buys a fairly accurate rifle, and is told that it will “outshoot him”, he will never have to worry about his equipment being an inhibiting factor in accuracy, when it requires (as you correctly stated in the beginning of the vid) BOTH factors of equipment AND shooting ability.
This series ai an amazing body of work! I just discovered it and started watching it last week and have been watching one video per day. I am anxiously awaiting my new rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor that I am hoping to shoot at longer distances. I am now going back to many of your other videos and subbed your channel. Keep up the good work! By the way I think your voice sounds a little like Ted Nugent's so it gives an added flare to watching your videos!
Hi T Rex, great series and has taught me a ton about long range operations. Are there more vids beyond part 6? If there are I'm just not able to find them.
Thanks again for a great series, Kevin in CT
Hey Rex... Thank you for your time and professionalism. I know you probably won't have time to respond to this post but I can always hope. I was told that the Marlin X7HV 308 is an excellent weapon for the price tag between 500 and a thousand yards. Was wondering if you heard the same thing or have knowledge on the X7VH 308. I was told a nice scope to put on it is an SWFA SS 10X42. Just wondering if you could give me a yeah or a nay. Also I know one thing if S ever HTF I don't want to wind up in your glass.
In simpler words, you should neither skimp on your shooting skill NOR the equipment you are using. Your rifle, optics, bullets, cases, etc. are the great equalizer. One can only shoot as well as he can shoot. Be the best shooter you can be, but you will never be better than your equipment. It may take a lifetime to be the best you can be. If you can afford it, get the best money can buy. And you may never know how accurate your shots are if you don’t think this way. I can't stress this enough.
Thanks. I purchased a 20x60 spotting scope. I can't see where I am hitting the targets at 200 yds. Am confused what you, and others, were using to see where hitting at long range.
Hey Rex... that terrain looks like New Mexico? Btw.. amazing vids man. Ballistics has always fascinated me, nice to see someone explain it well enough to understand. The charts were beyond helpful.
If you are in NM, man I'm lookin for some long range shootin buddies.
Great video man! I can't wait to stretch my legs with my .308 this winter.
love the videos, great great info!!! do you have spreadsheets for all the ballistic data you reference? If so is there anyway you would consider google doc'ing them?
Good information!
From an engineering or scientific point of view, that is the basic definition of "precision" vs "accuracy".
I noticed you have the Kestrel 4500 in the video and this was published back in 2012. I was just wondering if you have up graded since then and if so, what are you using now?
I just ordered the 5700 sportsman. I cant wait to get it in the mail.. I couldnt afford the 5700 elite,
Omg that gun was nearly as tall as you that's sick
Firing solutions need to be worked out for your rifle and ammunition; every one is going to be slightly different and while it may not be measurable at 100yd, it will be at 600.
Rex, I really enjoy you sharing your knowledge. What do you think of the leica geovid hd-b binoculars as a tool for a hunter/aspiring long range shooter? Are they accurate enough to be able to reliably shoot 1000 yd?
Thank you for this awesome video series, I am learning a lot, especially that the gear I have will do the job if I improve the skills I have and learn some new ones. I do have a few questions though. Do you teach this one on one? If so, where and what is the cost? Where/how did you learn all of this and get so good? Thanks again. Peace.
Rex, what would you suggest for a steel target? I see lots of AR-550 steel plates for sale but they are expensive. Can you buy the steel and make your own for cheaper? Maybe you should make a cool video for us do it yourselfers. Thanks!
Howdy! Hardened AR550 is a good choice for close range rifle targets...but after 500m most rifle bullets do only minimal damage and even a cheap mild steel plate can last thousands of rounds. We use lots of scrap steel and cut it to size... 1/2 inch or more is best for mild steel.
First: thank you & God Bless. Second: I can only guess that you are former military, trained as a sniper...could you elaborate. Again, thanks for the videos.
What power spotting scope to you have?
great video
Opinion on one piece scope mounts verses two separate scope rings?
TiborasaurusRex...i cant believe you gave this much away for free....hit me up
Hmmn, repasted link doesn't seem to work for some reason, sorry for that. Article was reposted here ("Repost: The .243 Urban Varmint Rifle"):
westernrifleshooters.wordpressDOTcom/2012/02/28/repost-the-243-urban-varmint-rifle/
I want a 338 lapua that has 1/2 groups 2k max price (its ok if its like 2500). I want to be able to hunt with it if i wanted to and its ok if it has bench rest stock because they fit my hands better than sportsman stock. I hope you can find a rifle fitting my criteria. Also if there's a rifle thats just like in the 3ks and is like a laser beam and totally worth the money i would appriciate hearing about it, thanks
Bam. :) wish you lived in my neighborhood. I appreciate your videos. Well the history and biblical ones. I'd love to see more. I've never been fed so much meat.
lol- thanks bud.
Are you familiar with the MSR - reticle?
would a savage 110 fcp with hs precision stock be any good? at my gun store they have one also they have a savage 110 ba which also looks nice but its 2k so i'd only have like $500 left and have enough for a burris 6.5-25x50 which the scopes are good for the money
TiborasaurusRex , whats your opinion on anti-cant devices (water-level) that can be installed on the scope?
Am I the only one experiencing playback issues on this one? I saw part 7 all right, and part 5 had no issues... it's just part 6 that prompts a line: "if the playback does not start shortly, try restarting your device". I obliged, but nothing changed. In a sense, I hope it's just my problem.
@14:22 I am new to Washington State but would like to get into long range shooting. If you happen to be around here I am totally down to coordinate schedules.
Thank you for the invite, sir. Perhaps one day down the road it could happen. :-)
