Memory of Lightwaves is probably my all-time favorite Final Fantasy song. It's exact kind of song you want to hear on the title screen of a JRPG. It's beautiful and intricate, but also extremely relaxing. Songs like this are a big part of what elevates JRPGs from being facile grindfests to magical journeys.
Listening to this cover reminded me of insominiac mornings I had years ago, groggy but unable to return to sleep, where I'd turn on my PS2 (which FFX-2 seldom left) and immediately feel clear-headed and relaxed by this lullaby.
Moments like that are what make JRPGs special to me. To be perfectly honest, the JRPG is not a very good genre of video games if viewed through a strict lens of game design. But more than any other kind of game, they aren't really limited by the quality of their gameplay. What makes a great JRPG great in the end just comes down to how it makes you feel. It's the same as a good book, or a good song, like this lovely cover.
(This comment ended up turning into a bit of an essay, sorry. JRPGs happen to be something I'm deeply passionate about.)
