I’ve been playing guitar for a long time. This was the most comprehensive and concise lesson on I-IV-V blues I’ve ever seen. This one is all about the approach. Once you learn this, next you add licks to your bag and boom. Next level playing.
Yes I agree. There are some awesome little snippets in there hitting those chord tones in an interesting way. I've been playing for a long time too. I've relied on slowing down YT vids of Bonamassa, Josh Smith or Matt Schofield to get those little intricacies that give it that smooth blues feel. This is the 1st vid where I've seen this actually explained so well.
Funny, never been a lead guitarist, always rhythm, but this little kit really opened me up to adding things I hear others play but off of this structure in the same way hearing Clapton, Mayer, Knopfler play J J Cale songs opened my minor pentatonic world. Thanks man! I’m 69, In Austin, still in 4 bands and growing musically
Ross--if I ever get to Scotland I'll buy you a beer!! This is absolutely THE BEST lesson showing how to improvise through each chord in a dominant blues. There are tons of videos about dominant arpeggios on TH-cam, but they all fail to provide useful examples on using them creatively. Your explanation at 5:13 minutes on using "pick-up" notes as an approach into the arpeggios is sooo key - it shows exactly how to do it. I've been frustratingly searching for this kind of thorough information for 2 years (I'm kinda slow, duh) Your video has really connected some dots for me - many thanks!
H There...from the netherlands, i play along time almost 55 years and every day practice and searching for new or better solo,(styles) till mow!!!! thank you so much for sharing this....I LOVE IT VERY GOOD. BEST WAY OF LESSONS!! like youre little attacks...smooth but it is there
This was such a terrific lesson man. I love these lessons where you work on a chord progression and break down the licks over each chords explaining the highlights and how it all comes together. This is very very helpful, I hope you'll do more of this.
Blues playing may reuse its fair share of licks, but those licks, in my humble opinion, are foundational to getting a feel for the style of Blues soloing! Always appreciate the lesson!
I bought the Neural DSP plugin as soon as I saw your demo of it. I was using the Cory Wong plugin prior to that. Thanks for another great lesson. Always enjoyable and inspirational. And the Les Paul always takes it up a notch for me.
Not sure how I found this video. Wasn't looking for blues, or lessons, etc. at the time. It just kinda was there on the side. And I'm glad it was. Well done! I don't subscribe to many channels, but I did to this one.
Hi there Ross. I am a retired 72 yr old and appreciated your video. I like what your doing. I would like to know more about your lessons that you promote. I also really need some personalized technical instruction if you even provide that.
Enlightening ! I can assure you this is not so "Cliché". Its one thing to play basic lick, it's another thing to do it on purpose with the knowledge and understanding. Please more vidéo like this explaining how to taget specific note over chord progression. This is the best way to learn armony and having fun for casual guitar player like me.
Ross, I know this lick is common in blues. But I like the timing on this little solo. Your pickups to each part of the solo are a bit different and I think that adds a lot of style to it. Thanks.
6:30 Is the reason that famous 4 note blues solo and house pattern work well because you CAN keep noodling around with them for all three chords? just avoiding bad notes makes a beginner feel good.
I'm working on your book and I really love it. Now I have a question for you: how would you apply your method on the last five measures of a Jazz Blues progression? Many Thanks. Adalberto.
This video was really great for me I feel Like I took away a lot about how to improvise better. I Really want to get better at it like the masters!!! hahahah hopefully one day!!!!! ;)
Good performance. What's lacking is the drum track or at least a click track for folks to feel where the one is, especially when you switch to the IV chord.
Great lesson, Ross. As usual! So, I don't want to be that guy who asks, "Do you have tabs for that?" Instead, I'll ask if you are going to add bonus content to your website for us Bulletproof Guitar subscribers so we can dive deeper into this excellent instruction?
I love the guitar tone you get with the Neutral DSP Tone King plugin. I downloaded the trial version and can't seem to get a decent guitar tone no matter how hard I try. I'm sure it's something I'm doing wrong but can't seem to figure it out. If you get a chance to cover your set up and setting that would be great.
Hey, have you downloaded my preset? The link is in the description box. I also recently made a video about my setup for using plugins so you'll be able to find that on my channel
@@holmes44k44 I use a Universal Audio Apollo Twin MKII quad core. That's overkill for me though I really don't need it. A focusrite scarlett is always a good option so I'd recommend that
Nice lesson. The sound though doesn't touch me at all. Either it's the delay or room/reverb that makes it sound like you have a latency on the single notes. Also the voice over sounds kinda strange.
That's how you view it looking down at the fretboard though. Most people seem to prefer it this way versus vertical diagrams, which I have used in the past. All of my content is aimed at intermediates looking to progress to an advanced level of playing - I've never targeted beginners with my lessons and would not consider this particular lesson beginner friendly material in any way.
You wasted TH-cam bandwidth for THIS and TALKED for 15 minutes to waste people's TIME, for THOSE four notes, that people STOPPED thinking was COOL, in the 1950s?
I've built a career off of showing guitar players how a basic understanding of theory and fretboard visualisation can transform their playing. If I lose any viewers because I talk about theory, they're not the type of viewers I care about losing.
Different horses... personally Ross hits just the right balance of theory and practicality for me. I don't have a very good ear so can't just listen and copy but the theory helps me link the pattern to a scale I'm familiar with. For me it's a brilliant lesson.
Hey, I've been subscribed to BulletproofGuitar for like 9 months but I find it very difficult to navigate the website on my phone, leaving me very unmotivated to come back and continue the lessons.. I've probably only put about 4 hours into them even though I've paid $108(9x$12)in total.. I really don't want to lose access to the material but it's very hard to justify paying monthly when I barely use it... :( wish there was another way
I'm sorry to hear that. What is it exactly about navigating it on your phone that's bothering you? For what it's worth I'm having the entire website rebuilt by a new team of developers currently and it will be live within the next few months so the experience of using the website in general will be vastly improved. Hey Ross, a really fantastic explanation of this process. Great lesson! Outstanding!
Idk if its the lighting but that les paul looks stunning.. so clean.
Thanks! Yeah our lighting setup really works with this particular guitar.
Thanks for this lesson Ross. I've been looking for an instructor who addresses the intervallic thought process in a blues. Exactly what I needed.

Even Robben Ford uses something similar on Just Another Country Road, and it’s one of my favorite pick-ups to a solo ever
I had no clue i was playing a cliché, a blues cliche at that, most of the times i improv over loops. Great video!

Great lessons, sometimes it is great to revisit the basics. Loving the light, very soft but a little dark imo.
Thank you! I agree it could be a little brighter
Blues Deluxe! Nice little lesson Ross, looking/sounding good lad! 😊
Great example of the lick! Thank you :)
Great analysis -- and the tone from those pickups is as good as it gets. To me that middle position is trademark Gibson all the way.
Your style of playing and teaching are great. Strongly considering purchasing some courses from you
Thanks so much Brad!
Some great ideas there, cheers!

The links are not all broken, could you share the Tabs and back track again please?

great licks, tone down the reverb
