Love this kind of video. Part of the fun is when you stop walking to take a photo -- I like to look at what you're seeing (via the GoPro) and guess: a) what you're about to photograph, and b) how it's going to be composed / framed. I get it right only about 20% of the time, but it's still really fun and a great exercise for me.
Absolutely love your POV videos. What a charming location. Also, STOP is pretty much an universal word by now, you will find it in plenty other countries besides Italy.
STOP is even used in international sport. In Olympic boxing, the referee only says two words, both English: "Stop!" and "Box!" He has to mime all warnings, such as "stop holding" or "no rabbit punching". That overcomes language barriers.
The 35/1.4 GM is TWO lenses in one if shooting on a high resolution camera. Hit your crop mode button and the lens immediately turns into a beautiful 50/2 equivalent. I like 50mm more than 35mm, so I keep my camera in crop mode until I need a wider angle and then hit one button to pop back out to 35mm. Works perfectly! I have the 50/1.2 as well, but the 35/1.4 is easier and more flexible on vacation.
Hey! Nice video! - Elba is pronounced similar to elbow so you got that right! - In Italy most towns have a thing called "raccolta di rifiuti porta a porta" literally curb-side waste collection, you'll get bins on street every other day (sad for street photography). - The little truck is in fact called "Ape" (that means Bee in English), it's from Piaggio, the same company that makes the Vespa (That means Wasp). They have a thing with insects. - As someone already said, STOP is universal I love the pictures you took in this video! Hope you had a great stay here in Italy!
Hi James! In Italy, Stop signs aren’t exactly in english, it’s just that we use the same word when it comes to traffic law. Fun fact: when the director of a movie says “cut!” on set, in Italy we use the word “stop” instead of “cut”.
James, I love the set of images you took on Elba. I know if had taken any of these, I would be well chuffed. Keep doing what you are doing. It's awesome.
The Vienna Convention (1968) set the international conventions for road signs (especially shapes) and adopted the US design as the standard with 'STOP' written in either English or the native language. The US sign (and the word STOP) was so well known by that time that many countries just used the US version.
These are my two current favorites as well for walk-around urban/city photog: the 35 GM 1.4 and the 20 f/1.8 G. They're both fairly compact and light. The 35 can handle 90% of the work and crops in nicely to about a 50mm tightness without losing much resolution and then the 20 can come in and save the day for when extra wideness is required.
Damn I love you post process edits in this video! Really nice coloring and stunning what atmosphere you put into this really light colors in real life.
There are my favourite type of videos you do btw. So of you could spend the rest of your life wandering round pretty European towns that would be grand 👌😂
Nice video James. I know you weren't impressed with your pictures but I really liked the one of the flowers on the steps at 4.38. Also, that seagull was very obliging for the "meditation" photo! Great timing.
James I was in Northern Italy for two weeks a great place to photograph. Much has changed since my last visit a number of years ago and I did notice the stop signs in English. I started in Milon , went to Lake Como , Cinque Terra, Venice, Florence, Piza and Luca.
That’s awesome James! If only I knew! have been to Elba so many times, it’s right across where I grew up (Piombino), where you probably took the ferry to Elba. Marciana Marina is actually where I used to go spend the summer when I was a kid, but there are so many beautiful beaches.
I bought the 50mm 1.2 GM last week and shot a wedding with it over the weekend. It's amazing. I'm not regretting the expense. Might be my favourite lens right now and I'm only mid cull.
I haven't finished watching yet but I qas wondering about your bin comment. You said it kinda ruins the aesthetic but I would argue that is gives a photographer more of a challenge to take great photo's where you don't see the bins. And I think with many bins comes less littering which very much helps the aesthetic. I might be wrong though, I have sadly never been to Italy yet.
This is not true, here in latin america there are no English stop sign. Just the form is universal, the language must be so the tourist understand it as English speakers use to be less interpretative of other languages jahaja
@@luanrosa3022 we're currently in Mexico and all the stop signs say "ALTO", my first Spanish word I've learned since I notice them as I drive straight through without stopping. .
Great photos! Really like the sharpness and vibrant colors. Italy is amazing. 50mm was the common lens for old rangefinder cameras like Leica and Canon. How much editing in lightroom did you do with these photos? This Sony seems impressive. Might four years for it to become affordable. :) Cheers.
35mm is now my favourite FL. I love my old Minolta 35mm f2 on my A99. I empathise with a honeymoon and a kid. Ours was 2 years old, so even more challenging! Because STOP in Italian is FERMARE...too wide for a road?
I've been to Elba last summer (I was in San Piero in Campo) and I took some nice pictures and videos. The Elba Island is really a treat for photographers and videomarkers :)
Hi James, we say "Stop" as well. You might use other words but they would be longer than 4 letters. Not practical for a quick read on the streets. Elba is amazing, have a nice holiday/honeymoon!!!
Great video - Fascinating to see you on Elba (almost went there for my honeymoon), as have always had a strong interest in the Napoleonic Era, was there much on the island that basically advertises his short stay there back in the day?
Yes, Napoleon was exiled in Elba. Hence the famous palindrome, "Able was I, 'ere I saw Elba." Fun fact: Napoleon's first language was Corsican Italian, and his surname indicates that heritage. He spoke French with a strong Corsican accent his whole life.
Got into this video thinking "this might sway me towards keeping my 35 GM and not order the 50 GM", but after watching it, I ordered the 50 :D Was hoping that 35 and 65 are my ideal combination, but 65mm is too long too often and looking at my 35mm photos from the last 2 years I think many could have been better at 50. I just hope that's not GAS talking xD
Others might have said this already, but I believe the EU standardized stop signs being the english word "stop" to some degree. Portugal, Spain, France, and Italy all have "stop" on their signs to my knowledge and more countries prob do as well.
Nice video James. I have the 35mm 1.4 and love it. Would like to add a 50mm but can't afford the 1.2. How did you like the 50mm 2.5 G? I would like something that compact for street. Surprised to see you selling the 20mm 1.8 G, such a great lens!
I was in Marciana at the same time as you! I was part of a film crew for the Italian tv series i delitti del Barlume. You can see the set at 6:20 of your video. It’s the “fake” bar next to the water.
your pictures were good, considering what was on offer.... the first 2 were very high key, and some others were too. This effect was rather interesting, as it simplified the image. I guess large parts may have been blown out. Still the effect was rather pleasant. You also tried underexposing... and I think in the future I will consider exposure in a similar, more creative way. I personally think 35mm and 50mm are 2 quite different focal lengths... so I have both those primes ( though I use Fujifilm X series ) Anyway, once again, I followed and enjoyed your comments and photos.
Im surprised that you took the Sony camera with you on honeymoon/ holiday James. By your own admission, you don’t really enjoy the experience of using it. I would have expected one of your more quirky/fun cameras. Nice little video though and i do really like this style of photography 👍
The streets are similar to those here in Malta....for certain details I prefer a zoom lens (18-150mm on APS-C) as sticking to one focal length makes you miss some interesting shots. I do carry two primes with me for certain details (22mm and 32mm - again on APS-C).
I thought I'd better scroll down before posting the palindrome🤣 It's like an 'ear worm' for me. Whenever I hear or read anything about Elba, Napoleon's palindrome pops into my head. 🤔
Kind of wish I could do something like this around home, but getting anywhere by 7:00 with public transit means waking up at 4:30 to be out the door by 5:30, and I really don't want to do that.
Strange about the stop signs written in English.....it's the same in Portugal - well, where I live in the Algarve anyway....not sure about Lisbon etc (parar is stop in Portugese so only one more letter to paint!!!)
swore I just seen you in rutland vt today, I said you look so familiar if that was you...you replied something about must be handsome LOL if not you have a twin out there

If I were to go back to film I’d go for a Mamiya 7 …
