  • Using Product from www.Transomrepairkit.com; created this video because there are tons of transom repair videos out there from repair shops and boat makers but very few from "normal" folks and even fewer for a newer bass boat... Hope this is helpful. You can email me if you have any questions about the product or how to do this, I certainly have opinions on both, thanks and enjoy email is hillbillied_homeboy@yahoo.com

    I would not use that , it looks like just foam , and that wouldn't last very long considering you cut out all the wood , I would have stuffed with Fiberglas mat and then poured Fiberglas

    I know the answer is probably “to reduce costs” but why don’t boat manufacturers use a honeycomb or solid fiberglass Transom instead of wood. I had to replace one about 20 years ago when there were no replacement kits. We used multiple layers of 3/4” marine plywood sandwiched between layers and layers of hand-laid fiberglass.

    Well that looked easy enough I was thinking the whole back of the boat had to be removed

    On my 98 nitro 640 lx it looks like at the bottom it turns into the boat instead of just vertical. Was this boat like this?

    Lee if you were to do this over again would you use the seacast product instead?

    Question. Did hollow out the rotten wood or remove it all completely?

    I'm sure this is been beaten to death at this point, but having gone through exactly what this guy did, I went with Seacast for my 2nd, and that product while comparably expensive, is absolutely spectacular. I can't recommend it enough. I've done 3 transoms, and the last two with Seacast, and there's absolutely nothing on the market that compares.

      nice !! if i ever go down this path again i will use SeaCast

    Will this only work on a fiberglass boat? I'm assuming the transom needs to be completely encased in fiberglass for this type of solution???

    • @leesturgill1
      @leesturgill1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheOrcasRule I assume so but that would be a question for the manufacturer I suppose

    I tried it. First mix came out more foam like. Second mix did not expand near as much, the color changed and matched what the manufactures pics looked like and it was hard as a rock. Same measurements and 2 different results. I don't think that I stirred it as much the second time so maybe I got too much air in the first mix? Waiting to put the last layer in.
    I am not having any issues with having enough product. I wish it was all harder like the 2nd coat but I am afraid that if it did, I wouldn't have enough product to complete the transom.

      How is it doing now? Do you like it?

    • @milo301
      @milo301 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry just visited site again and saw your question. I kept it for about a year or two. Some of the mix wasn't as good as the other and didn't turn to the same hardness (more lie a stiff foam). Overall, the transom was good. I never had an issue out of it. the boat is with a friend on his pond and it is still going today. I'm looking at needing to do it to another boat now and I am probably going to go with seacast this time.

    Have a 18 1/2 ft Fisher Pro bass boat. Need to replace transom. Considering SeaCast. I like the way Lee S. did this bass boat. Mine is very similar in tail area. My question is....what did he do to remove all bad wood if past left and right of the flat mid area he showed cutting? My flat motor mount area is 48" wide, but boat total side to outside is about 85". Question is does the wood transom go all the way across end to end? Close to 85"? Lee only shows cutting the middle 48" area. Could not get total side to side without taking top section off, which he did not do. So is transom only in the flat 48" wide area? Need replies friends, appreciate your comments. THX JMF

      Chris Fuller we did remove all the wood full width. The chainsaw is long enough to reach from where we cut the top cap to the side.

    I used this stuff to make a deck for my boat . I had the same problem with the advertised volume of finished product I tried to contact the guy to let him know that there websight coverage calculations were wrong .. He just quit responding to my text messages .. Very unprofessional IMHO ... I did talk to I guess the distributor and explained the problem with there info on there sight . She was nice enough to give me an additional kit at there cost . At least that's what she said .idk .. A day or so after I talked to her I noticed that they had changed there calculation info on there sight . LOL!! This was supposed to be cheaper than using seacast Like half the cost is what they proclaimed ... If I had to pay reg price for both kits it would have been the same cost as seacast .. If i had know that I would have used seacast instead without question ..
    This is a shame ... I mean the product would be ok to use in some instances but I don't think I would ever use it for a transom unless it were for a small hp motor ... JMO ...

    Sorry folks See a lot of questions and I suck with checking and responding but several have asked is the boat still going today , Yes it’s still fine and ever added a backplate. Traded the boat in and a fella in NC bought it that I see from time to time at some tourneys. Would I use this product again , loaded question.. the fact it’s still going today and was cheaper than the other brands makes me say yes but the service sucked , they were unresponsive to questions and sent less product that what I ordered. I hope this video put things in perspective for folks. It was a job but not something that a couple buddies and some form of a motor lift couldn’t accomplish in weekend. 43k views wow

      I was wondering how did you get all the little pieces of the wood out from the bottom of the transom?

    looking at using this product on a 21' roballo... how is yours holding up? any flex any issues? to be honest i'm a little concerned, might just go with nidapour, seacast or something else... let me know your thoughts.

    • @leesturgill1
      @leesturgill1  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ryan Thompson I traded the boat on a new one but till that point it held up pretty well and I did add a jack plate to the equation. My suggestion would be to choose your product based on how long you plan to keep the boat. If short term ( few years) the product I used should be fine but if long term I would go with seacast given their reputation. I was just trying to extend my boats life a few more years since I had sunk so much money into it already.

  • @leesturgill1
    @leesturgill1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes I would use Sea Cast if doing it over but this seemed to work fine Boat is still going strong for the fella who bought it
    Saw a previous comment about this being portrayed as easy.. wasn't easy but with the right tools and understanding of how it works, was easily done in 2 days
