I live in Arizona, am registered Republican, and voted a straight Democratic ticket for the second consecutive election. 11 of my grandfathers and great uncles served in WW2, some in major battles, and some came home with Purple Hearts. I'm not going to betray that legacy by voting for incipient fascism.
EDIT: Hobbs wins! Thank you everyone for your well wishes and support. It was heartening to hear from people outside Arizona and especially outside the USA. Here's hoping for a brighter future for us all.

That's interesting. As a Republican myself, I can agree we need to move away from Trump. 90% of Democrats would rather vote for a monkey than vote for Trump. We're unlikely to win the general election with Trump running as a candidate regardless of how terrible Biden is. However, I find it interesting you don't call out all the craziness from the left and single out the right. Even many liberals/democrats can acknowledge some of their party has gone insane.

So much so that if you look at how we actually use the word, the majority of the time it's precisely in line with the characteristic features of fascism he lists.

I want to address two key points here. One it's not "too soon to celebrate" people are celebrating (or lamenting) the lack of a decisive victory, not a win. If you think this isn't worth celebrating you're naive, as Hayes pointed out there are established tideflows to this kind of thing and this went against all expectations of that, especially since Republicans have validated a cheat-to-win strategy that ensures decisive victories are relatively low effort even for the unpopular candidates in a two party system.
Second "vote fatigue" should not be a thing in a democracy. You're a voter, just do your part. Having said that it would be logically uniform, that is to say voters on both sides will tire at the same time. But - another thing Hayes pointed out - platforms. If one voter base is going to break symmetry and give up, it's not going to be the party whose candidates have suggestions

    • @gnirolnamlerf593
      @gnirolnamlerf593 ปีที่แล้ว

Everyone has something to learn in politics from everyone else. When you listen to Pelosi, she is worth listening to. She knows how Washington works. "It works lousy," say younger voters? Change the whole system?" Really? Sure you don't want to vote for Trump? That's his goal. "Oh, but we're going to change the whole system for good." Are you sure the system is at fault and not the people in power and the voters who keep electing them?
Americans never seem to want to tackle the root causes of any issue. Congress has the worst approval rating of any part of government. Yet by my count, at the moment, only 14 incumbent members of the House and zero members of the Senate (pending NV, AZ and GA) who were running this November have been voted out. A couple more lost primaries. Everyone hates Congress but no one hates their own reps. That makes no sense. At some point, you have to recognize that your own rep is part of the Congress you hate and bears some personal responsibility for making Congress so dysfunctional. If removing Pelosi, McCarthy, McConnell and Schumer from the leadership were the #1 priority of voters (instead of the price of milk), all they have to do is elect members of Congress who pledge to do so. If they fail to keep the pledge, then they get kicked out in the next election. It's that simple.
Why do I _not_ have the feeling that Pelosi, et al have been grooming replacements, so that there is not a bare-knuckles fight among Democrats when they retire or die, thus weakening the party further? For the last two years, we should have known who the current leadership were prepping as possible replacements. Instead we have to guess who the three new top leaders are going to be or when they will take their positions. Katie Porter? Hakeem Jeffries? Tlaib? Swalwell? Raskin? AOC? Madeleine Dean? Or people the nation has basically never heard of but who are very competent and influential within the caucus? If the GOP wants to fight over who is Speaker/Leader, what jobs MTG and Jim Jordan get, let them squabble in public.
Democrats should be making a smooth transition to create confidence in the new generation of leadership before it takes over. Pelosi has been a brilliant leader, but then so was Bill Clinton. So was Obama. We move on. We don't need to keep the same people in power until they croak. That's what happens in an autocracy, as has been pointed out in reference to Donald Trump's goals. "I alone..." should not be the mantra of a Democrat or any democrat. If Pelosi is the only Democrat among 200 or more, who can effectively lead her caucus, the Democrats have a serious, serious problem, just as the GOP has with McConnell in the Senate.

After surviving being in schools that are all of them potential war zones for mass shooters, the Republicans then topped it off by taking away their right to bodily autonomy.
They were attacked directly and they responded to it.
Also, GenZ has grown up online their whole life. They are internet-literate in a way the Boomers are not. They are aware of what's going on, and they are more progressive, and more fed up, than most of the rest of us. They WANT what the Constitution promises them they should have. They WANT a planet that isn't a burning fireball. They WANT a decent, dignified life. They WANT to not be living in a theo-fascist totalitarian hellscape.
So yes. They were directly attacked by the Republican party and it's supporters, and they SHOWED UP to fight back.
So of course, today Republicans started saying they want to raise the voting age to 21. The same Republicans who insist 18 is old enough to buy guns want to deny those same 18 year olds their right to vote - because they don't vote Republican.

My prayers were answered by the results of the mid-terms. When DJT was POTUS, I experienced extra stress every day as I heard or read his lies and absurdities and was consistently appalled by the ignorant MAGA supporters who accepted his malignant narcissism and sociopathy as "normal." He brazenly emulated Hitler's public speaking methods, likely a result of the influence of people like Steve Bannon and Stephen Miller, embracing the passage in "Mein Kampf" ("My Struggle," authored by Adolf Hitler), “… all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these in slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan. As soon as you sacrifice this slogan and try to be many-sided, the effect will piddle away.” So, we incessantly heard "rigged" and "fake news" and "socialists" and "the election was stolen," etc. The more he repeated the lies and the bigger the lies were, the more his undereducated MAGA base lapped it up. The attempted coup at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 was the greatest attack on our democracy since Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, yet Trump and his minions sought to downplay its ugly violence at every opportunity, cravenly refusing to accept accountability. The mid-terms of 2022 have restored my faith that there is a silent majority of sane Americans who want to preserve our beloved and envied democratic republic and who refuse to allow white Christian nationalists to impose their misogynistic, racist and puritanical beliefs upon an entire nation diverse in religion, race and socioeconomic status.

It is such a relief to know there are patriots in both parties who voted for democracy. I'm left and have always voted that way, but if Democrats in power tried to disrupt a lawful election, I would do everything in my power to vote them out.

Pleasantly surprised with the outcome of the midterms. I’d be van happier if Katie Hobbs can hold off Kari Trump Lake. I do think the polls on “democracy” are heard to read as both sides may feel there is a threat on democracy, and the polling that states americas feel democracy is secure may be those that feel the election was fair but may also feel there is an attack from the right.

    • @bellabana

Yep, it seems the Republicans will retake the House and it’s on a knife edge for the Senate. If the republicans take both it will be incredibly hard for Biden to then pass any legislation going forward.
What’s staggering is that it was NY infighting between the left and moderate democrats that lost them 6 seats which will end up costing the Democrats the House.
They should be ashamed of themselves for concentrating on their petty grievances against each other rather than focusing on stopping the republicans!!

People in a free Democracy are happy because they're free to do as they please, with limitations. Why does this freedom anger Americans or un-settle them in their daily lives? Does an American have to be under pressure to perform well or in general? NO. Just live your lives as you please and don't fear your fellow-Americans but approach them how you'd approach family members and friends: with respect and companionship. Work together, folks 💯💯

Another ticketsplitting example could be Pennsylvania. My county voted for Dr. Oz over Fetterman, but voted for Josh Shapiro over Doug Mastriano. I know Oz was Trump endorsed, but I didn’t hear him screaming the election was stolen and looking to make changes to the voting process like Mastriano. Was probably more the celebrity factor.
