  • Connecting a Nikon DSLR to a 1000mm Celestron NexStar 102GT and imaging a galaxy, a star cluster, and The Moon. I include a telescope review of the NexStar 102GT. Most of this video is also applicable to the 102SLT.

Excellent video. I had a Bresser 102/1000 mm achromat and it was very nice for its low price but what I did not like about it was it's length of 1 meter.

Yeah - I don't mind the size to transport as I have the room, but it is awkward trying to see something close to zenith, plus you get interference from the tripod legs much sooner. Thanks for the comment! CS!

Great video! You really manage to take us with you through that journey and show us the fun you had with it. As you said: Given the limitations of this telescope-mount-combo the pictures came out surprisingly well! That's what I keep repeating: With some experience and persistence it surprises me again and again what is possible with quite simple tools. Thx for putting it together!
BTW: Of course one leg of my NexStar 6SE-mount also snapped long ago, but not as bad as that I couldn't use it. Some tape holds it in place for now but your solution looks interesting!

Thanks Stefan, I did not mention in the video, but the star shapes coming from this telescope were also very good. Coming from an SCT, I was a little perturbed by how effortlessly flat and crisp the field of view was compared to all the effort you have to go through to collimate a reflector!

@@Felldisulfide That will be my next major upgrade: A decent refractor telescope. I am thinking of the Redcat 51. But first I have to solve some issues I am encountering in selling my little business. The idea was to let loose of the constant responsibility you carry with employees and stuff, but unfortunately it will probably take some persistence until it pays off 😉. Astrophotography might have been a good practice court for that 😅!

Thank you, this is an awesome video for me as I am considering purchasing a used Celestron 102GT … we are just at the haggling stage … I noticed you are a
Canadian, as I am too and live in Orangeville … where are you located … 👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻

Hi James, I'm south of you, in Milton. If the price they are asking is anywhere around $250, I would go for it. It's worth it for the mount itself - you can use it with a different scope if you find that one too big, but it works on a wedge in equatorial mode, and it can be guided with a smaller telescope (I just posted a video about this).
