  • I’m Dr D, 62 years old and embarking on my 40-Year Plan.
    To do this I want to eat as healthily as I can which is why I embarked on the Zoe Science & Nutrition testing programme.

    Thanks for sharing your journey. Nice seeing the apps analytics. They look simple, intuitive and well designed. I’ve enjoyed the Zoe videos, but haven’t really considered the program until watching this.

    Im 56 and have an almost identical experience, with my diet and with Zoe. So agree 100% with everythig youve said here. I did the tests in December (2023). Micro biome score 88, and good blood sugar and fat control (everything in the top 25% for my age/gender). Id been eating mainly whole foods for months beforehand... so good to get the confirmation it was working. Im nearly a month into using the app on a daily basis and the insights it gives you are brilliant. But... ill become an occasional user at some point soon. Interesting one about oats... i gave up oats nearly 2 yeats ago, after hearing negatives... well, for the last 18 months ive suffered from terrible acid reflux (which i never have before). As a result of Zoe, and the supportive conversations you can have with their coaches through the membership, i re introduced oats and a number of other whole grains... wow, im back to normal, no reflux! So, worth it just for that... as well as in many other ways! 💪💪💪👍🙂👌😎

    I am 63, retired 3 years ago after my BP started on its inflationary cycle; i was also putting on so much weight, and being utterly unable to curtail an appetite for sugars and junk food.
    Unfortunately, simply retiring didn't mean i could change my lifestyle overnight. It felt like i was trying to turn an oil tanker in choppy waters.
    For the past 12 months i have had more success and have managed to cut out much of the junk and surplus sugar. I also gave up coffee, as i found caffeine to be an appetite stimulant. Green tea i find, helps to suppress appetite.
    Both weight and BP are dow. Though i am not on the Zoe app, it is very good that they make much of their science available and that people like you, also share and inspire others with their journey to good health.

      Good luck on the journey you have started. I’ve found trying to make 1 small but sustainable change at a time all adds up to progress. And not expecting miraculous short term results …. Sustaining long term change is the way forward.

      @@connoroleary591 ... also you inferred difficulty in curtailing junk food ... there is some evidence its addictive .... i also experienced this ..... it takes a lot of intentional work to move towards a healthier diet.

    Really useful review and confirms was I had in mind, to try it for a period, learn how my body responds to different food, get a snapshot of my microbiome and then unsubscribe when I have learnt enough. Definitely subscribed to this channel as we seem to be on a similar journey.

      Unfortunately you have already eaten their cookies, stuck the fine needles in yourself and handed them your data, and you paid them to do it.

    The Zoe app's not available in my country yet but I've been following their podcasts for a while now and have slowly been integrating some of their suggestions into my lifestyle. Look forward to your fermentation video as I'm slowly getting into that

    I love the idea of the Zoe app but the cost puts me off (would be more accessible to everyone if it allowed you to pay monthly) so I am trying to learn from their podcasts. Also I might invest in a blood test machine to see the effect of certain foods on my body. Maybe you could give us example of recipes/food that you eat? That would be helpful. 👍

      I agree, unfortunately Zoe program seems relatively expensive - particularly at the moment when we are all feeling strain from high interest rates and inflation. I learned a lot by simply listening to the Zoe podcasts, and found their advice easy to implement. However, getting the Zoe tests done, and seeing my personalised food scores increased my understanding on my body response to different things that I eat.

    Can I ask how long have you been exercising? Enjoying you videos, binge watch a few today.

      I have generally been reasonably active over the years, mainly jogging and trying to stay fit for the mountains. However, I have had a couple of episodes where I have become less active, not least between about seven years ago to 2 years ago when I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. So I have got back on the exercise routine over the last two years or so.

    Well done, you look very healthy. I've just started following Zoe, lost weight and feel good. My BP is normal and I'm following the Zoe advice about 90%....enjoying it. Hope you keep fit and healthy. 👍🏻🥶🤩

      It was £270 for the test kit and then I subscribed for 3 months at £25/month. It’s not cheap but could be the best money you ever spend.

    If only Zoe was cheaper and blood glucose monitors were free. The NHS spends around £6.5 billion on obesity a year. You would think the Government would help fund this sort of thing and actually save the public purse long term as people have more incentive to make better food choices and don’t have to feel the financial burden of doing so. In addition a lot of healthy food is expensive so it’s a never ending cycle without more government intervention.

      Your sentiments chime with my own thoughts. Sadly, I think both the food system and the National health service are both broken. But fixing the problems is a massive task. I applaud Zoe for at least having a go at changing the status quo.

    Thanks for taking to time to record your health journey. I'm a similar age & recently had a cholesterol result of 6 - not too high but Doctor recommended statins. So I am looking at Zoe, more exercise etc. Has your cholesterol reduced since taking the Zoe programme?

      The truth is, I started losing weight when I changed my diet after listening to some of the Zoe podcasts and reading a couple of books. My cholesterol has reduced a little since losing weight and increasing my exercise levels.

      I had a similar reading. I moved towards Mediterranean diet and shifted from butter to Benecol (which is supposed to reduce cholesterol) that got it lower.
      I'm doing Zoe with similar aims.

      High Cholesterol in blood is a symptom of inflammation not something that lowering really helps for people without familial hypercholesteroleamia. Even the manufacturers now admit that the mechanism of action is not the reduction of cholesterol but their impact on inflammation

    All very good but who has the time to download the app, picture the foods you buy, monitor this and that, buy new kitchen equipment etc.

      I haven’t need to buy any new kitchen equipment. But I agree at logging the food does take time which is one reason I stopped the ZOE program. But a short period of focusing on what you eat if it has significant long-term benefit, I consider worth the investment. Now I am better informed I know what foods are better for me and can just focus on buying and eating these most of the time. I still have the treat of course.

    If you must monitor - when you burn through your glycogen stores and start burning fat, you will produce acetone. There is a device called Acetrack that monitors acetone accurately, and gives you a numeric score that can be tracked. It's about £200 BUT there are no subscription costs after that. You pay once and that's it.

    Please forgive my rudeness if I ask a couple of direct questions. Are you a medical doctor? Secondly, did you do a follow up screening to see how the changes have affected your numbers after some months on the programme?

      Thanks for the questions. I’ve a PhD but not in medicine and I’m currently interested in and training in fitness and soon nutrition. Because my gut score was 85 which is fairly good I didn’t consider a follow up test.

      I went for 4 months … you can always continue beyond that if needs be.

      I signed up for 12 months, but 4 months is plenty. I got the message pretty quickly. I hardly ever use the app now, 5 or 6 months since I started.

      Because i stopped using the app I unsubscribed - I am now giving Nutracheck a go - £5/month - much more palatable (in more ways than one!).

      I subscribed for 4 months, but was already eating very healthily, my gut biome score was 98%. As he says its fantastic if you need to really overhaul your lifestyle, but if you're already on the journey then a month should be enough

    So all the scores in your Zoe app are based on you specifically? So while your score for bread is 43, mine might be different?

      Yes, that is exactly it. I haven’t had the chance to compare my results directly with another person, but I suspect there are some broadbrush general conclusions that would apply to most people. One issue with supermarket bread is that it is usually a refined carbohydrate that gets absorbed in the upper intestine very quickly leading to a glucose spike.

    I start Zoe in Feb after watching the podcasts since the start. I know it's not cheap, but in the grand scheme of things, some people spend a similar amount on nights out in a month

    A lot of this is common sense. The cost of Zoe is offputting.

    In the first minute i saw you eating cashews bacon white bread pizza - they're all a big no no for me

      Actually, nuts are not bad for me. But yes, ultra processed bread and bacon are not top of the healthy list in my view - even though I find them delicious !!!!Interestingly in some food health apps nuts get a bad wrap because of their fats (which, in fact, are healthy ones) and their calorific value of which we can only absorb around 50% of. So they are not that high energy either. My personal experience is when out in the mountains and needing energy, nuts do not deliver the energy boost I need in the short term. Of course, this response may be somewhat personalised to my body’s response.

    I would have liked to know if you lost weight, but I’m guessing if you were already eating that way, then you recorded no weight loss. Just your bacon sarnies got the chop

      I started listening to the ZOE, podcasts and acting on their advice along with studying a number of authoritative books and lost around one and a half stone over 18 months. I didn’t Notice any significant weight change whilst on the Zoe program.
