I doubt gasoline varnish did that to the tank.. the acid you used is the likely culprit, along with prolonged exposure to what was probably salt water trapped under the tank.. Also if you run ethanol-free / non-oxygenated gas, varnish wont ever be an issue.
Question for you regarding the volvo penta build, when you laid the Kevlar on the decking, did you do large sheets of it or strips? What would you recommend for laying 1708? Large sheets?
I imagine it was the fuel sitting in the tank that causes the aluminum to start developing holes. Fuel turns into gummy residue that clogs the fuel pump and carb as it deteriorates.
Your better than off keeping that tank in the belly, low and central.

I ran large sheets of Kevlar and uses of 1708 was replaced solely with standard Kevlar. So far on the boat, zero regrets.
