@@DarkbluesEXE25 yeah it’s the worst port of alpha 3 no question but still a good port on gba hardware for sure. My only real issues with the gba port is that there’s only like 7 songs and none of the characters get their endings
I recently got myself Max Payne on the GBA and this is the most fun I had in recent memory. The gameplay, the art style, the voiced comic panel style cutscenes are all here. It may have some cut content like missing chapters and missing weapons such as the sniper rifle, but this is still an impressive demake for the GBA. Oh yeah I almost forgot, the fight music theme in this game is straight fire! 🔥 It may seem to be an odd choice to use bongos at first during adrenaline-pumped sequences but it just works! Thank you Mobius Entertainment and Rockstar Games for bringing such a beloved classic into the GBA! 🥰
Just wanted to say thanks for including a Summon Night game and drawing attention to it. Those games are so addictive and underrated - they tried to make a spiritual sequel for Switch/ps4 (Maglam Lord) but sadly it really didn’t hit the same 😭
Up until today I am still waiting for a full English translation of Summon Knight swordcraft story 3 monogatari But yeah, maglam lord just doesnt hit the same :(
I only recently started collecting GBA games again since I still have my original little purple beauty and I am really happy to be able to enjoy it once again as it was the first time. And thanks to you, i'm finding new great games I didn't even know they were available for the console. Max Payne is one of those! I can only thank you.
I would say Asterisk and obselisk XXl would be at the top of the list. The game is a full blown 3d platformer running on gba hardware and it actually functions very well
*This Max Payne demake looks like a game that'd be cancelled and leaked online years later.* *Nice list there. I played most of these games and they're really incredible, indeed.*
Honestly, if this system has just had the same resolution as SNES, the same sound chip and the same amount of inputs, it would have been perfect. It's still amazing in its own right, but a few things just hold it back when, despite all its power, you know it's not quite able to to perfect SNES ports due to those things I mentioned above.
I never got the GBA when it came out. I was going into High School and wanted to be "cool" like the other teenagers. I eventually got a GBA emulator in my early 20s and played Metroid Fusion and LOZ Minish Cap. I was blown away. Definitely have many more games to try out. Thanks for this list, didnt know Max Payne came out for the GBA!
Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation is still up to this day, my favourite GBA game. It's a turn base, with battle animations but for mechs. Nicely detailed, and rather fluid
Tekken Advance actually surprised me, definitely not as good as home console pure 3d tekken, but I found myself not being able to put down the gameboy advance version!
Check out Big Mutha Truckers for a good 3d gba game. Same with Hotwheels Stunt Track Challenge. Star X is a decent Star Fox clone. I also like how Altered Beast Guardians of the Realms looked. Uses the same prerendering technique as DK County. Either of the Ecks vs Sever games are really smooth FPS games.
Awesome game choices. Rayman 3 would be perfect for the next graphically impressive gba games list. That game is in the very top of graphics on the gba in my opinion with extremely fluid animations and meticulously detailed environments the likes of which I've rarely seen on the gba, if at all.
I for one quite like how one of the GBA's launch titles, Super Mario Advance (the port of Super Mario Bros. 2), uses scaling effects. I wouldn't say that it's technically impressive as most other examples, especially considering that they had to butcher the sprite palettes to make up for the original GBA's unlit screen. As for some of the effects I like, the game has lots of shrinking, growing, squashing, stretching and 360° rotation effects. There's apparently also a static effect if you get hit by a Spark, but I'm rubbish at Mario 2 and haven't beaten the second level yet, so I haven't managed to see that particular enemy and graphical effect yet. It's also got some voice acting as well and I know that voice acting isn't a graphical thing, but it's got voice acting in a Mario game that comes on a 4 megabyte cartridge. Truth be told, saying that a SNES port is graphically and technically impressive would probably get you funny looks, but I'm an absolute sucker for scaling effects and they make me smile. That and the fact that nobody ever seems to talk about the GBA Mario ports.
I feel an underrated one is Wario land 4. It has so many amazing environments and also the bosses are horrifying. Shame Wario hasn’t had a game like that in so long 😢
@@DanielSmith-ll2iw I might need to try 3. 4 was given to me by a friend and I actually never beat it but had so much fun playing it and the mini games.
I tried replaying advance Guardian Heroes today but less than 5 minutes in i had to put it down the controls felt so unresponsive compared to most beat em ups I've played even on the same system There's combos that want too to string from ground to aerial attacks but you can't even jump during your base multi hit combo and you have to sit still in order to use it so it just felt like everything was sluggish
I was so excited for Mega Man Zero when it was announced. When I got it, I thought it was too hard lol! I also have LoZ: The Minish Cap, though I never played much of it.
One of the best looking games on the GBA I've ever seen is Gundam seed destiny (Japanese only, it's the sequel to Gundam battle assault) it seemed to use the same technique as in Donkey Kong country where the sprites are made based on screenshots of 3d models

The Max Payne is kinda goofy, the way bullet time is where he dives every...single...time... in cases where he wouldn't need to dive at all. But I guess as some kind of power fantasy it works.
I miss pixel art games like this it just wasn’t outta asthetic choice the designers put so much effort into making games like mother 3 or sonic advance look as smooth polished and fun to play as possible they don’t make games like that anymore
