    my late sister taught early childhood students, usually 6,7,8 yr. old. In a very poor area. She supplied school supplies,
    snacks to take home. Bought clothes for them, had everything they needed to wipe off and change into clean outfits, when they wreaked. She took early retirement at 51. Died at 61. Her grown children said most of her salary while working 20 years was for the needy kids. RIP Sis. Well done good and faithful servant.

      @@5mayalevi funny, 🧐, what I read was what this woman’s sister did which was go BEYOND what she needed to. I presume it made her happy to do that and that she maybe had someone else helping out with her bills. Not at all did I take the story as if you don’t do this you are a miserable failure to your profession and humanity. She simply shared her sister’s story because maybe she’s proud of her choices & likes to praise her. Relax. I’m sure you are an awesome teacher in spite of not choosing to donate your paycheck to your students. No one expects that. Ok, sane people don’t expect that. I’m sure there are some.

      @@dianeladico1769 As cruel as it may sound - and I am saying this as both a parent and as a teacher - YES, you "let them fail." At some point, especially very early on, we have to teach young people to take responsibility for their actions. And the earlier, the better.
      Also, see the response below about asking for help. Yes, children can always ask for help. To do so is part of the realization that they need it, and that they are taking responsibility. Asking for help is a good thing, especially if they don't wait until breakfast of the day an assignment was supposed to be handed in, and then reveal to the parents that they didn't do it.

    • @dianeladico1769
      @dianeladico1769 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jd3422 Everyone makes their own choices for themselves and their children and responsibility needs to be taught and fostered from the beginning, as developmentally appropriate. Actions have consequences and some only learn when it hurts. That being said, I agree with letting them blow a quiz/exam/assignment or two and learn from that. But to let them fail an entire grade without any intervention? If a child is slacking off to that degree something else is going on-some sort of learning or developmental challenge or something in the home that's not supporting the child's education in the way they need. Or they are just a late bloomer to being a self starter and need extra guidance. I am not for coddling in any sense but we can't forget they are still children and ultimately our responsibility as adults. We wouldn't tell a dyslexic kid to tough it out and not offer support, their brain is wired differently and that needs to be addressed. Learning time management and deferred gratification and responsibility is no different. Some kids are naturals, some need more guidance. You have to be able to tell the difference between needing help and making a poor choice, and respond accordingly, but I don't think a blanket 'sink or swim' is appropriate, not to the level where it costs them an entire year.

      no more unreasonable than the school providing lunch. The kids eat at school every day. I think the point here is that some kids were going hours and hours without eating. When my daughter was in first grade she had a schedule like that, due to space issues they had several lunch shifts and she didn't get to eat lunch until almost 2. Well when a 6 year old is eating breakfast at 6 am to get on a 6:45 bus, 2 in the afternoon is way too long to make them wait to eat. I don't see anything unreasonable about a parent wanting to address that or offering a solution or asking for the school to set aside a time for them to have a snack between those meals. A good teacher would notice this in her students and try to help them without parents having to ask. Teacher should have went to the principle/school board ect and said hey I have elementary age kiddos going way too long between meals, what can we do to make this better? Oh, I know, it's just a job; they don't really care.

    I have quite literally heard parents asking teachers to help “wipe” their children when they go to the bathroom. It takes everything I have inside NOT to ask the parent why they are not toilet training their kids AT HOME.
    Dear Parents: as a mom of two grown kids, IT IS THE PARENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE THEIR KIDS KNOW HOW TO WIPE THEIR OWN ASSES. If they are coming home with skid marks, grade yourself as a parental “fail” in the area of toilet training for that week . . . and UP your home training game.
    Full stop.

      Abso-friggin-lutely!! I’m thinking teachers need to add some diplomatic statement regarding this problem to back-to-school-night presentations in an effort to nip this sh*t in the bud. Something like, “School staff are not permitted to help students with personal hygiene issues that may arise in the restroom.” (Of course special ed is different.)

      Sometimes little kids have accidents. I appreciate that this is something that it is difficult for teachers to deal with because of safeguarding. That said, as a parent classroom help I took the risk to help a little one in a situation of extreme distress and embarassment and spoke to the mum at the end of the day to explain what happened and how I had helped the situation. I did know the mum and child concerned and the little girl had been very seriously poorly and was newly returned to school. The mum appreciated the help rather than her little girl be in an upsetting situation. I feel sorry for teachers and children in this difficult situation...perhaps the answer is to be as kind as possible and call the parent to come in and resolve the situation to spare embarassment and distress to everyone.

    Teachers aren't recognized enough for what they do. A fireman may respond to fire once in 5 years or so and he or she is haled as first responder heroes. A teacher is a hero every minute of every day of every year. They are attacked by students, parents, and the media. They deserve more respect for trying to make educated out off the nearly impossible to be educated. Thank you so much teachers.

    When I was younger, my grandma was sort of like this. I was in 1st grade and every day she would demand that the teacher should stop turning on the AC because I was constantly getting sick. And obviously it was a lose-lose situation, because I literally didnt care abt the AC, and obviously I wasn't getting sick from it, instead children often get sick from just being arround eachother. And my teacher had to put up with nasty calls from a mean angry grandma. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY!

My 30 years working with kids with all kinds of disabilities in classrooms from K-12, I only once witnessed a unprofessional teacher, which I reported to Administration. She was removed. These criticism are unwarranted. These teachers displayed great patience, compassion, dedication to these precious students. As did I.

      I had the pleasure of getting 2 special ed aides fired for not doing their jobs. My son wore diapers and one aide started calling me everyday to come change him. I finally reported her to the head of special ed and they let her go. The other aide was a therapist the school sent to my house once a week to work with my son. I found out she reported me to DFS because she did not like the way I was feeding him. He had severe food allergies, so that is why I was "mean" to him and only let him eat certain foods. When I told the school how I knew she reported me, they fired her. It is against school policy to report a student to dfs without filling out forms ect and she did not follow that policy. I had one teacher who had the special ed students sorting trash for a recycling program. I said he can't do that, he puts stuff in his mouth, that's disgusting. She was like oh, well too bad. I went back the next week, still bins of trash by the door. I told her if they were there again the following week I would seek legal counsel. By the way, is the schools star football player sorting trash too? I never seen it there again. The list is SOOOOOO lengthy. I had to fight all the way. He is 26 now, and still lives at home. I will always care for him until I am dead. Since he doesn't speak, I can't trust anyone.
