      Elvis they use locator pins. Basically 2 tiny dowels on the neck that correspond with 2 tiny holes on the back of the fretboard.

      Yep, sad
      When you buy a "custom shop" instrument, you expect it to be master crafted, but nowaday it's made by a bunch of minimal wage worker who were trained to do one task like a mindless robot,
      That's what Gibson is, guitar mass manufactured by assembly line workers
      There is no souls behind them anymore,

    • @jacobjohansson86
      @jacobjohansson86 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Except you'll almost never get an as good looking aging if you do it yourself. I had a friend doing so with two of his Strats, one where he'd do it with tools... and one with only wear and tear. And they looked like shit... nothing like an aged/relic one.
      It's as with jeans. I guess you're one of those old guys who think kids buying "aged" jeans are stupid, right? Because buying regular blue jeans will give you nice aging, if you just use them? NOT!
      Aging like this:
      i.pinimg.com/originals/7e/b2/04/7eb20451bfe2442ad4d4fc89329f9797.jpg
      ...requires tools and skills. Not "regular use". Same thing mostly concerns guitars. Custom instruments that are aged are also NEVER the same... so... well...

    • @FUNZO1975
      @FUNZO1975 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +dizzydevilrules
      I thought the same way once.
      I always liked beat-up old guitars, then when I started to hear about custom shop "aged" or "Relic'd" guitars (fender did it first in the early-mid 90's I'm pretty sure),
      I talked all kinds of shit to my friends whom thought it was a cool idea.
      ..........Then when I had actually seen one for the first time I changed my tune.
      Tom Murphy made a believer out of me.

    I wonder what car maker would do this "beaten up look" on a brand new product and try to sell it ? I have several guitars of different makes and I cherish them and keep them from any damage ! It is my way to pay respect for the hands who made it and my pride to play the instrument .... and it will age by itself and ring its soul in all its beauty ..without being molested.

      Agreed, BUT I have played a couple guitars that had been sent out to be "professionally aged", which sounds so wrong. and instantly my head just starts racing, thinking, " ok can i sell my car to get this?, I need this". I think "bill nash" did one of them and maybe another guy too. Thats different though then when fender or gibson sell one with pointless dings and scratches. I think it involved heat treating the guitars and reshaping necks ect. on the ones I tried, even rounding the necks shoulders and re fretting. The term "professionally aged" makes me laugh cause youd think that would mean a professional player just played it on the road for a long time. You'd think that if the neck angles and subtle differences on the reissues were so great that theyd just do that on a regular stock run. But thats marketing I guess. Best gibson Ive ever played was a 1998 standard, brown burst with brown back, worn to shit from the road. they wanted 1900 on account of it just plaing so good. it was beat to shit but all the wear was authentic.

    • @BBQ1953

      I have a 36 year old Fender Master Series Esprit that I bought brand new and I’ve played almost every day since. The binding has yellowed and with the exception of MINOR wear marks, absolutely everything else on that instrument is pristine. This business of beating up the finish and blemish in git is stupid.

  • @Ludus4H1

    Wow... at first pay attention to correct dimension, shapes, color... then: hit it with a hammer in order to get real thing!? Why struggle? But nice guitars, nice and expensive equipment, a lot of workers with nice salaries... and result is good and expensive axe. More or less.

  • @daw162
    @daw162 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    At least this is described correctly. The custom shop is now just a custom production area, at least that's what it seems to have become. turning out guitars that are just higher priced production guitars at a high rate of speed.
    I saw several "open box" 2013 custom guitars for sale this year. They're old stock. I also saw older (four years old?) $5100 SG style guitars listed again at the beginning of this year. Those went up and up in price here in the states and never sold. What did they do? put them aside since they weren't selling and then turn around later and try to sell them for even higher after several years?
    They're writing their own corporate obituary - we get it that they can make more guitars than the public actually wants. That doesn't mean that they should do that.
    I feel bad for the people who bought expensive R9s and are now having to sell them used for a moderate fraction of what they paid.
    Saw a spotless 1996 jimmy page les paul sell recently for $3600 on ebay. They sold for the equivalent of $9600 in today's dollars (5800 back then). what should that buyer think? what a terrible financial loss on something that was relatively exclusive when he bought it. Now you can just order all of the various VOS, etc, les pauls off the rack like a production guitar.

      Indeed. I love them too but the quality decline and price increase is inexcusable.
      I was looking at getting a new Les Paul custom but I’ll be buying the Tokai Premium version(nitro lacquer too) as it’s a better made guitar all round and a bit cheaper...about the same as a Les Paul Traditional.
      The Japanese make better guitars, period! It’s just petty chauvinism and patriotism that convinces Americans they don’t. I won’t fall for this shit again.

    Well it fakes something as good as it may be done. Never could see the point. Having said that I have an Fender Road Worn Strat which just feels as good as a 50 Strat can. The fist batch of those guitars are workhorses as good to the originals as can be with its thin broken in lacquere and everything else

    Different people like different stuff. All my guitars are late 60s or older. If I bought a new guitar it would probably have an aged finish. I can't handle the feel of a brand new guitar. I'd never diss someone who loved the feel of a brand new one though. Music is about making each other feel better in the world. Lots of ways to get there. It's all good.

      That's the most ridiculous things ever….for Dr & Lawyers w/too much $$$. That's taking the journey out of your bonding w/the instrument thru the good times & the bad the first nick is always Painful but you learn to still love it & like life it will wear you & the guitar down.
      You can't buy that no matter how much money you have. They ruined a perfectly good gtr & turned it into a Poser Guitar imo. It's in that Journey thru good & bad & the ugly the Joy the Love the Pain….that's what Great Songs & Music is made of again that can Not be bought.

    How do u do refret jobs with the binding there?

    • @kinkiebeast
      @kinkiebeast 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      u basically have to cut the frets to size and shape the ends to fit perfectly. Thats if u want to save the nibs, those little end bits. If not, then just take the frets out and radius and roll the binding again and refret using a tang nipper.

  • @carltalbot9212

    When I first started watching the video I was thinking for what Gibson charges for their guitars people should be getting the the quality of the custom shop build. Not the crap coming off their standard production line.
    Another issue is relic aging. When you look for a true antique you want the best quality product you can find. On the flip side if you want a factory aged relic you want it fuck up from the factory. I have found for the most part people are very sheepish these days. whatever they are told is good they buy it. why would anyone pay extra for a jerk in a factory with a razor, rock and a rusty train spur knock the crap out of your new guitar.

    10:10 ..... and then that nib breaks off, leaving a nasty ridge that makes your lower E fret out, pissing you off to no end.
    Standard Historic models have fret-over-binding. And thank god for that.

      I work for Gibson. They pay me to rub my unwashed ball sack across the backs of every relic. It's a high production facility so they strap me to a bungie cable and fly me over a conveyor belt loaded with guitars. It's not as glamorous as it sounds though.

    • @nickdryad
      @nickdryad 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most people who like relicing don’t seem to admit it comments. The was a guy who bought a brand new American strat. White. And the put on his camp fire to relic it. Dumb as. The point of distressing old furniture was really to scam buyers. The French violin faker Vuillame did this to sell his Stradivarius copies. Players who want to buy reliced guitars can’t afford really old guitars so they buy reliced ones but in fact they should just lend a new one to a ten year old. I guarantee when they pick it up a week later it will look reliced.
