Right?! This video is so well-made, and so engaging! I am a nerd who loves science, but I’ve always struggled with chemistry. (After five minutes, I struggle to remain conscious. Doesn’t matter what time of day, what professor. High school, college, whatever. Ended up taking it at community college so I can get the credits I needed.) it is much easier for me to connect to material when I have some idea how I can use the knowledge. I always thought chemistry should be taught as a cooking class, with digressions into things like gardening or DIY beauty products… I also love functional art exhibits. But I digress, I would be so excited to take a lab like you are suggesting. I know your students will love making their own hair gel! The fats in flaxseeds oxidize more rapidly than others. Are you in Store flaxseed meal in Ziploc bag in the freezer.
Yeeeesss finally, how to preserve! Ive been longing for this recipe for so long!!! My trick to seperate gel from seed is to not move it at all, let cool, itll be thock enough to slide off the seeds sitting on the bottom. Also I eat the seeds, you can salt them or sweeten them, put in oven with parshment paper to make a light biscuit
I actually made this gel (WITH the preservative) and it worked!!! Thank you so much for this tutorial!!! My flax seed gel has lasted 7 days at room temperature and I can't believe it.

Hey girl! Quick tip is you can unscrew the metallic top from the french press and take the lid out while you get all the gel in a container, then you just put the top back on and screw the metal top again
I love this gel. I’ve been using it for a few years now and it’s the best thing for my hair. Tip: try using a strainer while the gel is still hot to separate the seeds. Much easier process
Yes strain immediately after closing the heat when the gel is still hot...it strains easily and mess free, and later thickens a bit. No need of cleaning later as the leftover seeds form a ball in the strainer and can be discarded quickly
Totally new to making flaxseed gel, so glad you've shared the process, especially the ratios of ingredients and timing! Going straight to the french press as soon as I'm done boiling the mixture works best, allowing it to cool some let it get so thick I couldn't press it. But on my second try I went straight to the press while it was still super hot and thinner and it worked like a charm! Excellent video and instructions and your hair is beautiful!
@@gramnet A few drops of a high-quality extract go a long way, depending on how big your batch is. (And yes, it can be taken orally and it's very beneficial for health, great when you feel a cold is coming etc.)

Girl yes! I used to use a mesh strainer for the longest time but I really love how thick I can make my gel now with the french press method. It makes extracting SO much faster!

Thank you for the very informative and easy to follow steps with this process 😊! I do have 2 questions just so I can fully understand the process. Since the milliliters = 2.868632, what specific ml number on the pipette tool did you fill the perservative to? Also, did you round the final number at all?
Wow, I would have never thought of using a French press to strain the gel. But you let it cool down for way too long. I let it boil for 5-7 minutes max, then only let it cool for 10-12 minutes. I find if I let it cool for longer than that it gets to think to strain.
For the preservative, is there a reason to use the .75 peecent amount vs the 1.5 percent amount, and vise versa. Basically, what determines which amount you should use?
This is insane, and I'm loving it! Thank you, thank you...THANK YOU! I will be experimenting with this soon, as I enjoyed trying rice water and a rice mask recently after having my curly hair bleached :)
How long can I use it without the preservative? I have been thinking about making it every time I use it so I don’t need to add preservatives. And is it bad to leave it in your hair if there are no preservatives? Assuming I made just enough to use in that day
Mine isn’t leaving a cast. It is too light, even though the gel was quite thick. But I use a lot of water to style my hair. Is that it? Why won’t it form a cast? Did I use too much oil?

Hello I wanted to try this with the preservatives. How ever I’m on a budget. I wanted to know is the glass beaker and stirring want necessary? Or can I just use a Pyrex measuring cup I use for cooking and metal or plastic spoon? I already have a huge bag of measuring Pipettes and the scale.
Hey can we use daily this gel without washing off ?? Nd if yes then won't it be a greesy ?? Nd without preservatives will it work same ?? And can we use any kind of essential oils ??
Yes you can, flaxseed gel is a very lightweight gel that is water soluble, doesn't cause build up on the hair and washes out clean when you get to wash day. But feel free to experiment to see what would work well for your hair. Without preservatives it works excellently. I would recommend storing it in the freezer in silicone ice tray as I showed in the video. If you store it in the fridge it will only last 1-2 weeks. Yes, you can add any essential oil of your choice to create a nice aroma to the gel 😊.
If I put aloe vera with my flaxseed gel would it still be good for six months if I put it in the freezer or me adding aloe vera to it would mess up the expiring date
As long as you freeze it fresh it should be fine. Just make sure not to refreeze any left over (freshly defrosted) gel after styling. Chuck that out and start with a fresh cube the next time you need some.
Highly recommend Distilled water b/c it is less likely to have trace metals/minerals and helps decrease probability of bacterial growth compared to tap water.
Flaxseed gel is useful for all hair types. You only need to adjust the amount you use for your hair curl pattern, density & length + a lightweight water-based leave in.
