    So, the first thing you think when you see a squishy fun pink toy is: "Hmm, I wonder what would happen if I put that in a chemical bath?"

    • @JeffersonLab
      @JeffersonLab  10 ปีที่แล้ว +74

      No, the first thought was 'I wonder what would happen if we were to put this in liquid nitrogen?' I'm sure that was clearly stated...

      @116387377365442937386 But that wasn't the thought. The thought is given as a quote in the video. Rewording it might give an equivalent meaning, but that equivalent meaning isn't what the though was.

    +Marinus It's five cents worth of nitrogen. It would cost far more to return it to its main storage tank, so dumping it on the floor actually saves money.

      PJ MasterDiddy It really wouldn't be that difficult. Sure, the Leidenfrost effect would prevent rapid cooling for a short amount of time, but that can easily be counteracted with additional amounts of liquid nitrogen. If it were really that difficult, gloves, goggles and other safety gear wouldn't be required when handling it.

      Jorden Clayson I agree, I think because they know what they're doing, they wanted to cover the surface evenly with liquid N so we'd get that epic result. If they hadn't done that, I'm sure it would've ended like some other neanderthal's experiment and just froze on the bottom.

    If anyone is wondering, elastomeric polymers like the one that ball is made of have different properties depending on the temperature they’re subjected to. Below a certain temperature, dubbed the “glass transition temperature”, the polymer changes its character from elastic to rigid, and begins to yield far more quickly to stress and strain.

    It wasnt an experiment, it was an observation.

    • @JeffersonLab
      @JeffersonLab  9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Vityou It *was* an experiment. A variable was intentionally changed and the effects were observed.

    • @zacklee5787
      @zacklee5787 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There was no variable changed, it was an observation, like astronomy, still science, but not an experiment. What im trying to say, is that it might be obvious to someone what the ball would do outside of the nitrogen, but you have to test that to make sure there isnt some hidden variable.

    • @JeffersonLab
      @JeffersonLab  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Vityou Ummm... the *TEMPERATURE* was changed.

    • @apljack
      @apljack 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Vityou It was an experiment because ball was added to an environment to observe what would happen to it. (IE: Really cold liquid vs. normal air) The difference is not just the fact there was a variable change, but that this situation was intentionally instigated by the experimenters. If these balls were known to be found in such cold temperatures normally, and could be observed in the environment without removing it from another, that would be a simple observation.
      Similarly to lab rats. If you place them in a maze to see how they react, it is an experiment. The rats were placed in there to see how they respond to the environment of the maze. It would only be observation if you happened upon a rat in the wild and watched it for a few hours.

    • @zacklee5787
      @zacklee5787 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah I see what your saying but they didnt test how it reacted to normal air. And with the rats, you would have to see how they reacted without a maze first or else the maze could have no effect and you wouldnt even know.

    Why did you just dump all of the liquid nitrogen on the floor?

    • @JeffersonLab
      @JeffersonLab  9 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      Jessica Valirov To get it out of the bowl.

    • @ayylmao7187
      @ayylmao7187 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jefferson Lab Couldn't you have just put it back in the container? Or is it dangerous to do that? Or is liquid nitrogen non-reusable?

    • @JeffersonLab
      @JeffersonLab  9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Jessica Valirov It could be poured back into the container, but it's safer to just pour it onto the floor. If you look at how things are set-up, the container is at an odd height with respect to the presenters and its opening is much narrower than the bowl. Given this, it's entirely possible that some of the nitrogen could be spilt. If it's spilt, some of it could skitter across the table and end up splashing on the presenters. Now, they are dressed in a way that will protect them from small splashes, but there's no real point in exposing them to that risk if you don't have to. So, you pour it on the floor. The floor is hard to miss and it's far less likely that the nitrogen ends up on the presenters.

    • @ayylmao7187
      @ayylmao7187 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jefferson Lab Hm. It seems like a waste to me though, but better safe than sorry.

    • @JeffersonLab
      @JeffersonLab  9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Jessica Valirov It only costs about 25 cents per gallon. So, while there is a bit of waste, it's only a few cents worth.

    Something that sort of disappoints me with Liquid Nitrogen videos is they only ever show something getting frozen. But with something like the Koosh that dramatically changed shape and properties when it was frozen, it makes me curious what the material is like after it warms back up. Does it go back to it's flexible wibbly wobbly state or does the material get ruined after the freezing.

      Nick Bailey Guess it depends on what your definition of 'terrible' is. The nitrogen that was poured out costs about 25 cents or so. And, even if it were to have been poured back into the storage Dewar, it'll still turn back to a gas. It'll take longer to do so than being poured onto the floor, but is was still 'dead nitrogen walking' at that point.

      1) Generally, you throw it on the floor. See "Let's Pour Liquid Nitrogen on the Floor!"
      2) If by 'disappear' you mean 'change into a gas' then, yes.
      3) Anyone with money, yes.

      ***** It depends on how much you want. For us, it's about $1 a gallon.

    • @JeffersonLab
      @JeffersonLab  10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      ***** You can't have it in a sealed container, as the pressure will eventually build to the point where the container explodes. If care is taken to prevent a crosswind from blowing over it, the open mouth Dewar can hold nitrogen for about a day. The 10 liter Dewar we use, which isn't seen in this video, can hold nitrogen for about a week, if the Dewar is pre-cooled first.

      Liquid nitrogen cannot stay liquid in our hot environment, it melts off soon enough. The floor is too big and hot to do any damage to it. If you see what happens when you dump liquid nitrogen on the floor, it fizzles off and collects dust. Helpful for cleaning I guess.
