Take a shot every time I use the word „odd“ 😂 Also - I use the phrase „reading slump“ in here, it’s ok to be in phases where you‘d rather do something else than reading ☺️
Ahh this makes me so happy to hear! I have a plan to incorporate Moon of the Crusted Snow into another reading vlog this year, excited to read it ☺️ Tanya Talaga mentioned as well that she loves the sequel!
what a neat idea. my TBR is so long now in the hundreds and there are def some books that are lowly rated. i should either tackle them or just remove them. love also the sprinkle of vlogging during the video!
Just found your page and am loving your content already. Not to mention that your first room in the video is absolutely beautiful! 😍 Looking forward to watching more of your videos and hearing your thoughts. This is a great idea to get some books off your shelves that haven't seemed as desirable to get to as those more hyped books. 3-something rated books are often my favorites to read. I don't feel pressure to feel that they're terrible OR amazing (if that makes sense?). And sometimes I get really lucky and they're so excellent that I can't figure out what everyone else missed.
Thank you so so much, that is very kind ☺️ agreed, I‘ve definitely had 3 something rated books landing on my favourites list! Also, there’s an added pressure and hype with 4 star books, sometimes they fail to meet my expectations!
Leave the World Behind was one of my favorite books last year, despite its 3.17 rating on Goodreads. Catherine House is another favorite of mine that has an abysmal rating of 3.12. Both of them leave a lot of questions unanswered and are not really in a clear genre, I think that's definitely why they have such low ratings, but I love them. This was such an interesting concept, even though you didn't love the books I think there was a lot to be learned!
Ahh Leave the World Behind is a book I want to read as well - didn’t realize it has a low rating! I have heard mixed reviews about Catherine House, great to hear from someone who really loved it! If you like a book with unanswered questions, have you read We Spread by Iain Reid? I loved it! It’s a quick one but very gripping
I love this video idea! My reading is definitely dictated by Goodsreads reviews, and I sometimes wish it wasn't. I am always worried I am missing out on books because I just blindly listen to the star rating.
Thank you ☺️ I totally get it! Whenever I see an interesting book at a library or bookstore, I try to stop myself from checking GR reviews and just put it on my TBR!
New subscriber. Your video came across my recommendation page and even though i dont normally watch worst book vlogs, i was intrigued by the fact that you were picking books om your TBR. After watching i love the way you talk about what does and doesn't work for you. The Vegetarian by Han Kang has such low ratings but i thought it was such a fascinating read.
Welcome & thank you for giving the video a chance ☺️ I try to take notes while reading, it’s quite difficult for me to verbalize what I think about a book, glad it came across! Ohh I heard only good things about The Vegetarian from the booktubers I watch, I‘m surprised it has a low rating! I guess the booktubers share my taste? This is one that has been floating around in my mind!
I haven't seen any of your videos until now, and I'm happy to have stumbled upon you! You are so well spoken and have a positive, calm energy, even when you're not reading the best books 😂 I learned very quickly and early that I can't pay attention to average ratings, because it has basically no bearing on whether or not I will like the book. Sometimes I agree with the average rating, but then I also have a lot of 5 star reads. The best example of this are the two absolute lowest rated I have. Both are Eric LaRocca books, which I honestly understand because they are not gonna be the author for everyone. One is at 2.79, which I generally agreed with and gave a 3. The other is at 2.97, which I gave a 5. So yeah, I generally don't even look at ratings/reviews until after I have read the book, since there is no guarantee I will agree.
Thank you so much, appreciate the compliment ☺️ Ah this is interesting, even the fact that the author gets such varied ratings from you (I also have authors where one book is a 5 star and another is a 2 - looking at you Brandon Sanderson). It’s great you don’t pay attention to that anymore! I don’t know Eric LaRocca I will look up the books!
Good question 😅 a lot of people seem to like the friendship and coming of age aspect on goodreads.. I guess they didn’t find it as problematic as I did!
This was such a fun vlog to watch. I'm really interested in reading Alexis Wright but I've heard their writing style is very unique and it either works for you or it really doesn't.
Hi! Just watched your video after you appeared on my recommended page. I’m glad I clicked on your video, very illuminating content. A book that was lowly rated on GR but I actually enjoyed was Pizza Girl by Jean Kyoung Frazier as well as Idol Burning by Rin Usami translated by Asa Yoneda. I gave both of these books 4 stars, I guess I just love reading about unhinged women. 😂 Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Thank you so much ☺️ ohh I love stories about unhinged women, I will look these up! Have you read anything by Ottessa Moshfegh? She’s great at writing unhinged women 😄
@@Nixreads I have indeed read one of her books, Death In Her Hands, also about an unhinged woman. Gave it 4 stars! I plan to read more of her bibliography with the next book being My Year of Rest and Relaxation. If you like unhinged women then you must read My Husband by Maud Ventura translated from French by Emma Ramadan. That book was a wild ride! 5 stars for me 3.68 on GR. Looking forward to your thoughts on any of these books.
@@chanelg6384 ah I just put My Husband on my list, it sounds right up my alley - thanks for the rec ☺️ I haven’t read Death on Her Hands but I did recently read My Year of Rest and Relaxation (I featured it in my last reading vlog) which I really liked!!
I grabbed a book out of a little free library several months ago and then looked at Goodreads when I got home with it. It is a 2.84 now. It was the lowest rated book on my shelves. I set my expectations low and gave myself permission to dnf. I read it a couple weeks ago. I ended up giving it a 3, so higher than the average. What was weird is that the copyright page at the beginning indicated that it was a satire. I love satire, but that book wasn’t satirical or if it was then I’m too stupid to see it.
I think I have more the opposite issue of reading highly rated books and haaaaating them lol the lowest rated book I own I totally understand why it is low rated but it was a fun time for me lol
🦢this motivated me to logged my tbr books on goodreads and realized i had more than i thought! definitely might try this when i dont know what to read next. great video!
🦢 At least now that the worst couple of books are gone from your shelf, you can look forward to a high chance that every other book you pick up will be a better read^^ Still sucks you didn't have have a better time with them though
Ouch! You brought the brutal truth to this video. 😄 The Sophie Hannah rating makes me a little nervous because I have 4 unread Poirot novels by her sitting on my shelf. One more issue that you raised was not liking the prose style of the diverse author. This brings me to a point I struggle with. It is just my impression, right or wrong, that literary prizes, reviewers, and critics seem to give a pass to some diverse authors because those authors are considered to be critic proof. In other words, if you criticize their work, then you get cancelled. I recognize that diversity is important but a bad writing is bad writing no matter the author's background. 🦢
I don’t agree with prizes giving diverse authors passes. In this instance, I don’t think Black Swan is bad writing, the prose is just too verbose for my taste - I hope this comes across in the vlog! Ah I should have mentioned that The Next to Die is so so different from Closed Casket- which is why I was so disappointed! It’s like the books were written by 2 different people (which makes sense since she is trying to sound like Christie in Closed Casket). So don’t be afraid to pick up the Christie books, they will be so much better I‘m sure. I liked Closed Casket back then!
Much credit to you for taking up the challenges. I don't look at average ratings when I am deciding which books to buy. So I am not sure if there are any books that I liked that were generally dislike. 🦢

If nothing else, it's a good way to clear out some shelf space for books you like better! I'm working on curating my collection this year too.
Agreed! I already put them out of sight 😂 wonderful!
moon of the crusted snow is such a good book and the sequel is also amazing!
