Yes I do upsize, downsize, so thanks for your tips. Am right now looking for inspiration to upsize a right print chiffon shirt I made years ago, but still like. Finding the right fabric to match is the challenge! Thanks for sharing your ideas. Your striped shirt turned out great!!
I’ve actually just recently started doing upscales on my clothes that are a bit too small or too snug for my comfort. I’ve actually seen online some others doing upscales as well. So your not alone in what you do. Your upscale is a little bold for my taste, but, it works! You can mix patterns as long as both fabrics have the same colors in them. It came out well, thank you for your tutorial on upscales.
There are loads of awesome refashionistas sharing their tutorials online 😊 I just wish there were more doing upsizing as most people just toss away items when they get too small 🤪 one of the best things about refashioning is creating items that suit your own unique style & not caring what others think as you feel great in what you made 🤩
I own a plus size clothing boutique and there are a lot of times the clothing we receive fits one or two sizes too small! I believe I needed to see this to help!! I have a shirt that is super nice but way too small that will be the one I try!! Thank you for your videos!!

But I’ve been thinking that maybe I could tailor them for me. So I am looking to do men’s shirts into tunic dresses and also cut the neckline to be more feminine on some of the men’s shirts and also add more room to a some tight fitting shirts like you showed today thank you so much🥰

My past sewing experience consists of parachute harnesses and canopy repair for a parachute rigger's license. I bought a t-shirt commercially that had a quotation I liked and it was too small. So instead of having another larger t-shirt printed with the same caption I actually bought a singer sewing machine and some red fabric so I could insert a gusset (like your striped blouse) into the shirt I have. The t-shirt and the gusset are all the same solid red so it'll be much easier.
Absolutely brilliant! Refashioning is such a fab way to improve (& upsize) items that we wouldn't wear otherwise + it's a fantastic way to get started creating your own unique sustainable style too!
I was just searching for videos on upsizing a coat and found lots of upcycling, but mostly taking something big and making it smaller. So I am glad I found your channel! I think there are more upsizing videos since Covid, since staying home too much makes people's clothes shrink. 😉 But more videos are great! I have a few shirts that I have loved to transparency in the armpit and undersleeve area and I could use your technique to give them more life. 🥰They still fit, I would just trim out the thin fabric and replace it with a fresh panel. You just earned yourself a new subscriber!

MORE~!!.... Covin has played hell with me and my wife's waist line... And my wife and I are really getting into this 'stop the professional shopaholic/Landfill' madness... But mainly we need to get our clothes 'upsized' to fit... Please~!!!... We're both retired now. She got me to oil and service her sewing machine recently... That got me interested trying to sew... On a whim we bought a second sewing machine... Now we do dueling sewing machines as a hobby... What we lack is 'Knowledge'... Help~!!!

I love this tutorial. I would like to know, how just by adding the lace insert, replacing the original material on the black shirt but not adding extra material, that this increased the sizing?
The blouse has a bit of stretch & the lace has even more stretch to it (as shown at 7:20) so when put together they absolutely allowed for enough extra room where it was needed 😊
I was looking for exactly how to do this😊thank you for this very informative video...I've been holding on to a lot of shirts now I know how to upsize them🎉I'm excited ...
I have several of my late Mom's tops & I'd like to wear them but way toooo small. This video is exactly what I was looking for!! I'll for sure add side panels to enlarge... Thanks sooo much!!!

Fantastic video! Clear instructions (for something I need to do!) And novel techniques.. crazy time consuming sewing mistake: making a long corduroy robe cut one side of the front with the map going the wrong way! Bought more fabric to re-cut and used the mistake piece to make a gorgeous self-fabric ruffle down the front opening edge. Then there's always cutting a hole in something & covering it with an applique... But, I LIKE ironing.
I like your ideas and I iron everything including my cotton tee shirts. I don’t feel a dryer can do it. I have extremely expensive irons and I own 2 steamers. I don’t wear anything that’s not ironed. The shirt turned out cute.
I'm always making my shirts shorter 🤣 I guess I should create a few tutorials making them longer too! 😉 In the meantime you could add a ruffle like I did here: th-cam.com/video/wudzZrT6zP4/w-d-xo.html or make it into a dress like this DIY: th-cam.com/video/p6hbbaEnpDc/w-d-xo.html
Definitely keep doing videos lik this! I’ve seen others here and there but since there can be a lot of difference in how it’s done (I would never have thought of that heart insert for instance, so clever!) I’d love to keep finding/watching videos like these. This one was very easy to follow and I love how both turned out! As for your question, yes, I started making my own pj’s in this one style I loved and I can make one with two shirts. The first one I did with interfaces (iron on) and a curved V neckline (like the upper part of the heart shape would be pulled/stretched out like a V but keep it’s curves, is there a name for that one?). I also make summer dresses out of that very thin woven cotton fabric used for baby diapers, tetra fabric, although I don’t know if that is the universal name for it. Easy pattern (more like no pattern really) and awesome to wear. Own design too although it’s simplicity makes me suspect I’m not the first to create it I’m at the beginning of upcycling something now actually. Have this awesome home wear or loungewear 2piece that is 4 to 5 sizes too small. Since I’m not all that fond of pants in this material the choice was easy to make. The sweater/cardigan (can’t com up with the name atm but those with a zipper all the way through) is already cut, wanted to test out whether it would ge doable or not. Very, very challenging as it is with those waistslimming lines that go frome armpit to buste and down with a curved line, in my language it would translate to “princess lines” but I don’t recall hearing that name so elaborate description it is lol) but at least it is in that fluffy microfiber fabric so it might come out beautifully. And if not I will definitely wear it often enough at home that all the hassle, trouble and fiddling will be worth it. I’m cutting into my pants while watching this video. Watching these sort of videos is pleasant entertainment if nothing else while I’m doing my thing but I think I might even learn something or gain more confidence in my skills while I’m busy.
Thanks! 😊 Refashioning is such a fab way to keep our creativity flowing & create our dream wardrobe on a budget too! I've shared lots of upsizing DIYs on my channel: bit.ly/3ZJwJfU and even more on my blog: bit.ly/3H7bg8z
I have a top that needs upsizing and I really like the second method shown in this video. The thing is I need more fabric at the top than the bottom. Do I just make the bottom part of the rectangle narrower at the bottom or do I need to find a different method of upsizing?
My teen error was adding triangle insert to make my jeans bell bottoms and I used a red and white striped fabric but did not pay attention to which way the lines went and ended up with two horizontal ND two vertical but luckily sewed them on, by pure chance that when seen from the side they matched. In other words the inside left leg insert was horizontal matching with the outside ride leg and visa-versa. Not bad for a ten year old, haha.
It would depend entirely on the style of the dress - is it a top & bottom stitched together? is it all one piece? I have tons of upsizing DIYs in the playlist here: th-cam.com/video/BZFaYeeSylI/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=ConfessionsofaRefashionista and even more over in the index on my blog here: awesomesauceasshattery.com/category/tutorials/upsizing-tutorials/page/8/
Yes, I love to upsize things that are favs that are too snug! Love both of these ideas. My biggest thing is that i'm 5'2" and have to buy things that are XXL or Plus and they never fit well at all. Sleeves will be too long and the length is often too long and the armpits are to big and show my bra. When I weight 75lbs less, I could shop for clothes easily, but putting on all this extra weight has made clothes shopping a nightmare. Many clothing manufacturers think "petite" means small and cute....well it doesn't! heheh sorry it's just always been so annoying to have so many things fit so poorly. Pants always needing to be hemmed, etc. So yes, I'm totally into fashing resizing and redos.

Your upsizing videos are great. I’m smaller on top than bottom so almost any ready to wear is, well, not ready to wear for me. Sometimes I buy for the smaller part and sometimes for the bigger part.😊
@@old_lady5933 it's so frustrating that "off the rack" clothing can't be designed for normal bodies - tops are always too tight or absolutely huge on me and bottoms gape at the waist and are too tight in the rear! 🤣 Luckily we're clever lassies and can refashion into our perfect size and taste 😉

🤣 I have more than few upsizing fails in my stash too! Here's how I managed to successfully upsize a tiny vintage dress to fit me: th-cam.com/video/wudzZrT6zP4/w-d-xo.html
When I buy a blouse that fits perfectly at the bust, it is usually tight around the hips, could give me some ideas how I can alter them so that they fit me comfortably
You could try using triangle shaped inserts on the sides to keep the top part nearly the same size but widen the bottom of the blouse - for reference, I used a triangle insert to upsize this top in the back: th-cam.com/video/D7qg9zF46yM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=FWtsdSdWroFNdkJk
I’m going to try this with a shirt I got for cosplay, but is too tight. I’m afraid I’ll mess it up, but gonna try it anyway. I’m going to go with the back panel version.

Love this video and your laughing attitude😍. I have a question. My too has long sleeves so do I cut all the way to the end of the sleeves to the wrists? Sorry if that is a stupid question but I am not an expert at sewing. I need to fix this Halloween too that sadly doesn’t fit me anymore 😭😭😭
Not at all a stupid question (I'm not an expert either, I just have a huge refashionista imagination 😆). If the sleeves are also too tight then you can indeed chop all the way through the side & sleeve seams & then add the inserts. I have these tutorials showing 2 different methods to upsize tops: bit.ly/3DcKRUO & the beginning of this one: th-cam.com/video/p6hbbaEnpDc/w-d-xo.html (I also have an upsizing tutorial index over on my site too: bit.ly/3NbqJa4)
@@RefashionistaSheri thank you so much for answering me so quick as I need to do this project before this weekend😍. So that means I have to cut 2 piece of material. One for the sides and one for the sleeves right?
Thanks for the video! I just received a lightweight sweatshirt that I’d like to turn into a tshirt, and was thinking that it could benefit from being let out a bit in the sides, too. I was picturing the side panels I wanted to add and hoping someone else had already tried the process with successful results. Your video has given me confidence, seeing all the steps walked through.

Excellent tutorial Sheri, thanks for showing the two options. Looking for alternative fabric for upgrading my shirt, I discovered orphaned knee length socks are a good resource. They are the same length as my side seam, good stretchy fabric and will launder well. And they come prehemmed.
Knee socks are awesome for refashioning! I love using them as sleeves ✂️ check out my oldie but goodie DIY: awesomesauceasshattery.com/2013/11/08/backwards-is-beautiful/
@@RefashionistaSheri Unique and highly creative. I had not seen that idea before. The shirt is amazing, and I Love the purple pants. The shoes are so cool. I'm sensing editing my scrub tops in the near future will involve socks and maybe doilies. Brilliant idea Sheri.
You asked for it! I have a pair of hot pink child's size snow pants with a bib on them that I need to be a few inches wider from the waist to the mid leg. They are way too tight in the hips! I opened them up and was going to insert a long triangle piece of fabric of duck cloth. they are supposed to be waterproof and wind proof. I am also stumped by the bib. the upper part is fine. I don't want to enlarge that part. I kinda wanted to keep the upper bib part of these snowpants. They have 3 layers and 1 is fiberfill stuff. its really daunting. im not a great sewist yet i know basic stuff. what do you suggest? can you do a tutorial on this?
hmmm...I wouldn't actually attempt to upsize thick winter wear as it would destroy my poor old machine & thrift/charity shops are full of awesome winter gear at this time of year😂⛄that said, adding the triangular inserts to widen the top of the pants is absolutely the way to go 🧵 If the upper part of the bib is fine I'm not understanding what the issue is as widening the sides of the pants shouldn't affect the bib at all. If you want to lengthen the bib then I would suggest removing it where it connects to the pants (I'm guessing at the waist area - snow pants come in many different styles so I'm not sure) and then simply add a strip of fabric to the bottom of the bib and reattach it. 😊♻️✂️
I like the heart but the same thing could have been done with a much smaller lace gore in the back. It would have saved you some lace that way. I like the length of the black shirt on you as is. Growing up I hated the chore of ironing. But since I started sewing, I now find ironing soothing. There's just something nice about a crisp edge.
In my oldie but goodie blouse upsizing tutorial th-cam.com/video/D7qg9zF46yM/w-d-xo.html I used a smaller triangle of lace & found it didn't give me the extra space I needed (& that was before my chest grew even bigger 🤣) so I went with a larger/wider shape this time & it absolutely did the trick! I think I have such an aversion to ironing as it was one of the many, many chores that I was forced to do from a very young age but it definitely helps to have a crisp edge when stitching sometimes so I convince myself to do it when needed 😊
With sleeveless tops you need to cut the panel in a triangular shape with the narrower part at the the top ✂️ I did it that way in this tutorial: th-cam.com/video/eGL5qJfVZA8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=dhuCZYysTEqd2BVG

I have a few shirts that I have loved to transparency in the armpit and undersleeve area and I could use your technique to give them more life. 🥰They still fit, I would just trim out the thin fabric and replace it with a fresh panel.
You just earned yourself a new subscriber!
Thanks so much 😊 Upsizing is such a great way to keep our fave items in our wardrobes! I've shared loads of upsizing DIYs on my channel: bit.ly/3ZJwJfU and even more on my blog: bit.ly/3H7bg8z
I totally agree with you about ironing as a chore as a teenager; hated it!! ironing about 15 items everyother Sunday. I only iron as I need it. Moto
Mine was part of my extensive "weekly chores" 🙄 definitely something I avoid whenever possible as an adult 😁
I really like the tube fabric insert.
Personally I'd have gone with straight black to match the trim on the stripped blouse.
That's the beauty of refashioning, when you see an idea/look you like you can customize it to exactly your own taste and style 😊✂️
Help~!!!
Love it! 🥰

I luv this idea, I have shirt if I size up it too big everywhere else. I just need some space on the sides.
It's a great way to add space where you need it! 😁
I love your channel and its really helpful
Thanks so much! I'm glad my videos are helping you transform your wardrobe 😘
I love the upsizing tutorial! I've been nervous to try, so it helps!
Just go for it! The beauty of refashioning is that even if a mistake is made you can always transform your project into something else 😊

Thanks for watching! 😊 (I'm starting to come around to ironing only because it makes seams & hems looks so much better 😁)
I like your ideas and I iron everything including my cotton tee shirts. I don’t feel a dryer can do it. I have extremely expensive irons and I own 2 steamers. I don’t wear anything that’s not ironed. The shirt turned out cute.
I love steamers! They definitely make wrinkles disappear in the "fun-nest" possible way 😁 (I hang/lay flat most of my laundry to dry)
Love upsizing! I have cool tops that got to short. Any creative ideas for lengthening?
I'm always making my shirts shorter 🤣 I guess I should create a few tutorials making them longer too! 😉 In the meantime you could add a ruffle like I did here: th-cam.com/video/wudzZrT6zP4/w-d-xo.html or make it into a dress like this DIY: th-cam.com/video/p6hbbaEnpDc/w-d-xo.html
I hear you on the ironing. How did the lace give you more room? I haven't figured that out.
It's a stretch lace so it gave more than enough extra space when the non stretch fabric was cut out behind it.
Own design too although it’s simplicity makes me suspect I’m not the first to create it
I’m at the beginning of upcycling something now actually.
You are exactly right 😊 simply make the bottom narrower, I've used triangular shapes to upsize many times 👍
@Confessions of a Refashionista Thanks so much! I was overthinking it and it was stressing me out 😊
My teen error was adding triangle insert to make my jeans bell bottoms and I used a red and white striped fabric but did not pay attention to which way the lines went and ended up with two horizontal ND two vertical but luckily sewed them on, by pure chance that when seen from the side they matched. In other words the inside left leg insert was horizontal matching with the outside ride leg and visa-versa. Not bad for a ten year old, haha.
Yup! I think everyone who has ever refashioned anything with a pattern has done something similar 🤣
Good job. I have a question. How will I be able to make my dress bigger is the waist only?

I love uprising, but have a hard time putting fabric designs together!
That's the beauty of pattern mixing! 🤩 you put whatever the heck you want together to create your own unique style ♻️✂️
i tried to make a tiny dress bigger by sewing legging panels into the sides but it turned into a bizarre frankenshirt!
🤣 I have more than few upsizing fails in my stash too! Here's how I managed to successfully upsize a tiny vintage dress to fit me: th-cam.com/video/wudzZrT6zP4/w-d-xo.html
I like my tops long. However it is up to you.
I ended up leaving it as is 😊
When I buy a blouse that fits perfectly at the bust, it is usually tight around the hips, could give me some ideas how I can alter them so that they fit me comfortably
You can do it! 😊 have a look thru my upsizing tutorial playlist to see if there is a different DIY that might work better: th-cam.com/play/PL7dZmqeknPlgJVbHv_tSxrR7VXJGxXgLO.html&si=q0pMRXxqDVR6wIBT

It depends on which tutorial you use. The links I shared in my previous reply show you exactly how to do it step by step. 👍
Keep the length of the black, but take it in at the waist to flaunt your lovely shape.
Great idea!💡
Thanks for the video! I just received a lightweight sweatshirt that I’d like to turn into a tshirt, and was thinking that it could benefit from being let out a bit in the sides, too.

I added panels but the armhole is huge now (sleeveless button up) I tried adding darts but now they go almost all the way through the hem :( any tips?
With sleeveless tops you need to cut the panel in a triangular shape with the narrower part at the the top ✂️ I did it that way in this tutorial: th-cam.com/video/eGL5qJfVZA8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=dhuCZYysTEqd2BVG
What is that cool colorful stringy stuff hanging behind you?
My rainbow string curtains - they're great to separate the small hallway from the living room without taking up space & still letting the light in 😊
So I could use any type of fabric because o have some Halloween fabric
You can use whatever fabric you like 😍 I prefer to mix patterns whenever possible 😜
Nice cheap way to save money better than the stores
Shorten it. Great solutions. ❤😊
Thanks 😁
Why did you make the panels double thickness?
Because the light linen fabric I used was very thin & nearly see-through ☺️
My granddaughter has increased her biceps at the gym and can't wear her favorite black dress - sleeves are too tight. IDEAS, please?

(I hope that is correct 😁)
Just wondering why you don't sew the teatowel sewed line onto the sewing line of the shirt rather than having that part up against the skin.
It was a flat interior seam centered on the panel so it worked out great.
That was a clever idea to use the stretch lace. I’ve seen the gusset, but the lace was new. Thanks
Stretch lace is great when only a bit of upsizing is needed. 😊
Christina Sews up cycles a lot.
I only upcycle & refashion ♻️🧵✂️😊
Keep it longer
Not a fan of ironing 😅 but it does make for great seams x
🙃 it's so annoying but so very true! 🤣
why did you double the size panel? wasn't it much heavier than the rest of the shirt?
Not at all. The fabric panel was a very light linen so it needed to be thickened up to match the weight of the polycotton blend shirt 😊
thanks for the clarification.@@RefashionistaSheri
