Drain plug torque (10 ft. lbs.) for all except 62 789 01-S torque 16 ft. lbs). Fuel filter use 24 050 13. Helpful hint: You can find all your part numbers under your seat. You can buy a complete Engine maintenance kit - Kohler 7000 series 20-26 HP (#36 789 02-S) that has 2 quarts of oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, and 2 spark plugs. Good luck!
Thank you so much for the simple directions. I was about to have it taken someplace for quite a bit of money but not now thanks to your video. I appreciate this.
I tried changing the oil tonight and am glad I found this thread. I too was unable to remove the plug (this is the first time changing oil). I've decided to pick up a pipe plug socket set tomorrow and attempt removal with my impact wrench. Wish me luck ; )
Good luck to any normal human! To undo the oil drain plug, it was nearly impossible. I almost broke both hands and blacked out. Finally got it loosened. Good luck!
It is a bit of a bear for that first oil change. I moved the drain hose out of the hole in the frame, used an adjustable wrench around the outside, and used a 12mm on the bolt itself. A little bit of muscle got it loose enough to get started. Good luck!
I also refresh the hydraulic oil annually. It turns black from the wear and tear of hydraulic operation. Take the Allen plug off, using a hand symphonic pump suck out as much old oil as possible, keep track of how much you remove then add the same amount back I. Do this on both sides. Your getting the majority of the hydraulic oil out. My mower hydraulics seems quieter and more responsive. plan on doing this twice a season.
Ya no joke...I bought a new 54 version of this last month, just went to change the oil...holy mother of pearl...16 ft/lbs my ass. I was able to get it out using 2 pretty big adjustable wrenches. I put it back together with considerably less force.
Good video. I have a 50 with the Kawasaki motor but this gives me a head start. We've had a mild wet winter and I was mowing almost to Christmas. Time to winterize. Should I change the oil now or wait until I dust things off in the spring?
Like others I had an *incredibly* difficult time taking off the drain plug. I ran my mower for a few minutes, submerged the plug in boiling hot water for about 5 minutes, prayed to at least 3 gods of lawncare, and vowed to sacrifice my first born child (I can't have kids so jokes on them). It finally came loose after many obscenities and one real good hissy fit. Hope this helps 😅
Thank you! I’m going to try that. I haven’t been able to get mine off either. My wrench almost snapped. And after watching video after video seeing people take it off like it was nothing it made my blood boil lol.
Yeah that drain plug is no joke. I had to use some vice grips and beat the wrench with the frame of the mower. Still couldn't get it to turn until I let it run for about 5 min to heat it up and it finally loosened.
@@Ozzie4Para I was asking considering the filter is mounted sideways, if you pre-prime the filter, when you install it, it will spill all over the place... I've seen suggestions to install the filter, then add one full quart, run the engine for a minute, then top off...
When you pour oil into the fill, the filter will partially fill on its own. With filters this small there is no real benefit to filling the filter ahead of time. It's not going to hurt anything to do it, but the benefit is tiny if there is any at all. Lots of motorcycles use these same filters, and I've never pre-filled a one of em ever, even when I was racing. Many hundreds of thousands of miles later, no problems.
@@airtimepaintball463 thanks :) I forgot all about this post... I ended up just putting the filter on then filling the oil about a quart and a half running it for a couple minutes then topping it off work great

Can you change the hydrostatic fluid on these exact mowers? Or is a sealed system. No I didn’t watch the video and yes I just bought one yesterday without remembering to ask lol.

Lanier Lawn Care people think I’m crazy and weak when I tell them I couldn’t loosen that but. I tried all day and then I finally gave up. Tried again the next day with a vise grip and a large adjustable wrench. Thankfully that worked.
Randy would have had this oil changed so fast and clean .. Randy is a mans man he would have used just his hands no wrench at all .. Great video could have been awesome tho if Randy had done this video maybe you could hold the camera for randy sometime ... #bringrandyback
I wish my drain plug came off that easily. I tried heating it with a blow torch and it still won't come loose. Had to walk away before I hulk smashed the shit out of the mower.
I don't understand who makes a video and doesn't give tips on how to take something that's impossible. He totally fast forward to the easy part. What did you do to get off. Everything else is common sense.
You wouldn't want to tell us what type of filter or oil you use, right? And how about getting your arm out of the way of the shot (or moving the camera)? Not as helpful as it could have been.
I take back my "type" criticism. Cub Cadet didn't mention those details in theirs. Yeah, you could have shot it better, but they have a much bigger budget, I'm sure. Thanks for your efforts.
@LanierLawnCare Still doesn't help, no one's reading that trash when there's a video format infront of them. What em I, 80? No I'm here for Video information , that's what TH-cam is for, Visualizations, not texts like this nonsense I'm responding to.
I know this is an old thread but I will comment anyhow. In response to some of the negative comments on this thread; your local lawn equipment store will look up your mower make and model and tell you what "oil/filter" kit you need. Just give them your mower information...take a picture with your phone. It's that simple. Now for the less simple things. I hope I can remove the plug since it will be the first time changing the oil & filter, etc.. One person mentioned using WD40 maybe that will help. I was going to pay a man to come do this maintenance, but after two weeks of him rescheduling I said, heck on that... Gosh, people need to be a person of their word. If they say they are going to be their on a certain date for a certain time, then they need to do so. I understand stuff happens but really several times later means my money is not worth anything, just like his word!. Sorry about the rant on that, my frustration is showing. However, I am grateful for this video because I don't know what I am doing but someone has to do it so at least I have a guide now. THANK YOU.

Why? It's been sealed with the previous filter gasket 100% of the time since it was installed. What would you be cleaning off there exactly? Maybe some oil that you actually want on there? re: Lanier's comment...I passed his 20 years 20 years ago, and I've never seen a dirty one.

Just curious, when you installed the new filter, did you put fresh oil in it first, or did you install it dry? Does it make a difference?
I never install an oil filter on anything I own without priming the filter first.

What oil did you use what size oil filter. That would be useful information.
