I just bought my first new Gold Wing two days ago. I'm soaking up as much information as I can about various maintenance tasks. This video is excellent! My fellow wingnuts have told me that changing the air filter is definitely a bear of a job but not insurmountable. Maybe not for the faint of heart, but not impossible by any stretch of the imagination. Thank you so much!!

Greetings. I just completed the air filtre change on my 2005 wing. Thanks to your video it was not that big of a deal just time consuming as I went slowly. Just about had it buttoned up when I realized I forgot the air intake horns, so take off the deck again. Probably don't need the horns but put it together properly. Lo and behold everything worked! The worst part was getting bolts in to hold the seat. Now have to work up the courage to take apart the cruise control switch which keeps jamming. Your videos are very much appreciated.
Just watched a couple of videos and well done!! Although I don't have an 1800 yet I'm amazed at how Honda made changing the rear tire and oil change simpler but made changing the air filter more of a challenge...oh well, at least we have videos like this to help guys along. Keep up the good work!!
Hi Paul;Really enjoying your videos! I have a 2008 Goldwing with about 30K miles on it. Just had it in to have the air filter, front forks seals replaced and the recall done for the rear brakes. After watching the videos I'm sure glad I had the shop do it because even though I work as a mechanic I'm not at all set up at home to take on some of these tasks. Makes you understand a little more why they charge so much to do this.....I would too! Keep up the good work!!!Daryl

I know this video is over 2 years old, but THANK YOU for putting it out. I just changed the air filter on my wing while installing a CB. Although it is not an "easy" job this video made it bearable.

Paul & Kathy ... Your video was my "GUIDING LIGHT" for the last 2 days !!! Bit the bullet and did the dreaded "Gold Wing air filter change" !! 3 hours to disassemble (carefully) last night, 2 hours to reassemble the next morning. Actually, wasn't as bad as I thought .. Not difficult, WAS time consuming and there were LOTS of parts to deal with! Just took my time and all was good! After reassembly, she fired up perfectly, everything WORKED, and there were no leftover parts !!
The effort of engineering and design to make this machine is astonishing. I have the same year bike as yours, but I have heated seats and its gold colored. Thanx for the vids.

Just bought a 04 gl1800, so with these videos I will be able to maintain my wing to get the most out of it. The gl1800 is new to me but not wrenching. so this TH-cam University is great for adding to an old man's knowledge. Thanks, It was well worth watching.
Great Job Paul, nice video and explanation, You had commented on the right side lockable storage, and forgetting to hook up the cable. I took the cable off at the keyed end and left the cable attached to the storage box. Just in case. Thanks Chuck.

Paul I really enjoy your videos. Every chance that I get I love to see things on the Gold Wing. In 1969 I started riding a Honda CL175, now I ride a Harley, but I'm really on the fence for a GL1800. Keep up the good work.

Richard as bad as it appears it's really not bad. Just take your time and go by the video. If you have any questions just post them on this video and I'll answer them.
Paul, just ordered the air filter. Will probably get the project started right after first of the year.. gives me a few days to clean the garage and make some space for parts. Changing subjects... are you on PEI or in N.B.? Three buddies and I will be heading that way in August/September for a few weeks.
Good video I have watched this one before but it just came up again so I watched again man that is a big job I like Honda but why they couldn't have made it easier to change the air filter that's why a lot of them don't get changed when I got my wing didn't get much history with the bike i knew it needed tires I got the tires took it to the guy that does my work great guy very fussy and neat like someone else I watch on TH-cam no names mentioned lol had all the fluids changed air filter he found a little oil leak changed the valve cover gaskets and a hair line crack in one of the covers said he could fix it but he knew that I was like and got a new one that was a lot of work on the bike but I knew that everything was good and that's the I like it my god buddy this was a long story you have a great day and great job on the bike
Tom the filter seems like it’s a lot of work to change and it is for the first time but after than it’s not bad. When I did this video I did a total “go through” the bike. The bike now only has 42k on it and it’s as good as the day I bought it new in 2003. I like to keep the bikes in the best possible shape do to the precious cargo I have on with me. It’s great you have a good guy to help you look after yours. Ride safe bud.

Well, lesson for the day. If I want to ride I'll be firing up the Mustang. It's complicated enough. :) That is not a job I'd want to do. I do not own a Wing, but I have changed air filters in other bikes. Amazing how much has to be removed just for the air filter. I did enjoy the vid. The more you know, the better!
Well it's really a Honda Accord without the top lol and there's a lot of technology stuffed in there. I enjoy working on the wing although they really don't need to be worked on very often.
+Steve Rob It's a little complicated looking to some. To me it's another day in the office. I've worked on far more complicated vehicles. This is one time I can't rely on Luc to get it back together lol.
Luc if I was there like you I would have put a wind up alarm clock up on the motor some where and for sure he would have had the bike stripped down to its skivvies in no time. LOL

Man you amaze me. How in the heck can you put that back together again? Oh I could take it apart but putting all back together again and having it work is entirely different. Hats off to ya, well done. Love that bike! Love mine - most comfortable smooth powerful bike I have owned.
+PAUL GOLDWING Hey I'm amazed myself that it went back together lol. People don't understand the why Wing owners are so loyal to their bikes and that's because they haven hit the open road on one. I've had people say to me "That's not a bike" My reply is "It's more of an experience than a bike". Remember. You meet the nicest people on a Honda :)
Riding is a passion of mine and while I choose to ride Harley's, I like all motorcycles. I'm just not sure I'd ever change an air cleaner if I had a wing! Nice one Paul and Kathy.

Paul ..There's no doubt that Honda makes a good engine, I have had no real trouble with the ones I had. The only time I had engine trouble, was on a bike that was abused or little maintenance. Also I can't express enough to do a pre - trip inspection on your bike before you ride every time !!! This has saved my skin many times eg : nail in tires, lose bolts, worn parts etc. Always check before you ride !!.......Play safe and have fun ....all is well !! Wish you safe riding !!
I had a 2008 Goldwing same color. Kept it for 2 years, my wife stopped riding and I traded it for my Harley. I never had a problem with the Goldwing and only changed the oil and filter. After watching this, I am not sad that it's gone before I needed to change the air filter. Quite the job. If you have never been on a GW it is hard to understand that they are not like any other bike out there. It rides and handles better than anything in it's class, if it has a class. I do more short rides now and for that I like the rawness of the HD. But if I ever go long distances again, it will be on a GW.
+Vader1957 Man I've had over 40 bikes in my life. Had a lot of British bikes, metric bikes and a few US built bikes and the one I've always went back to was Honda but Honda was my first and I worked for Honda as a tech for three years so that's why the loyalty. No one builds the perfect anything my friend.
Paul, the more I watch this video and a few like it, the less intimidating it seems to be. It looks like a number of small steps to be accomplished in a certain order. I am going to take the 08 into the shop for the 24k service and inspection but after that and going forward, I will be doing all the regular maintenance on my own. The fluids look super simple. Way easier than my Harley and that is also easy enough
That’s great. None of it is terribly bad but there’s always a sequence to doing anything. ABS Wings like mine need a little extra care with the breaking system so if yours has ABS then my absolute advice would be to pick up a factory service manual. It will pay for itself on the first repair. Thanks for watching and ride safe.
Once you ride a bike with ABS brakes you’ll never go back to the old school. Believe me. It’s true. They are so good in fact all Canadian Wings have them as standard equipment on every Wing.
Purchased my Goldwing used from a fella that did not ride it much. It only had 11,000 miles on it. I did the filter change after reviewing a video on how to do it. Wow man that is the only maintenance that I hate to do. I put a K&N filter to extend the changing schedule but now after putting 25,000 miles on it I got to look again and swap it.
That was one heck of a time consuming project that had to be done. Much cheaper for you to do than having it done. What about a K&M filter or don't you like them or maybe it doesn't matter since it's not a two minute job. Great job, great video, Paul.
+Jake Schisler I'm not a believer in K&M filters. They state higher HP and I don't believe it. No matter what's in the bike for a filter it still needs to be serviced so it's just as well to toss it when it's time to do it again. Thanks for watching.

...and I was grousing about how tough it was changing the air filter on my 1500 Boulevard. Talk about having to suck back and reload... Anyway, great video(s) and I'm now caught up. All the best to you folks.
Sadly sold the bike before moving out the wet coast. Couldn't afford the government insurance they wanted for the bike. $2400/year was outrageous. Only had 20,000km on it. My truck insurance is horrible as well, but they must think bikers are suicidal. Bad as it is, it's worse on the mainland. Just an example of what could happen on the Rock if you vote the wrong way provincially.

I'm a pretty good mechanic Honda has made a routine job into a nightmare, they could have it going in the side , I have a 1975 gl 1000 time to change air filter 3 minutes if that , thanks for the video. From Ireland

Is it cheaper to go to a Honda repair shop or buy all these tools and the manual and rent a shed for this diy-filter-change? And all the other parts that will be damaged if you are not experienced enough? But it's always great to listen to your very detailed explainations. Always something to learn. Great job. This job needs a little time with a shop manual. The first time I did it on my 04 it took me about 6 hours. The dealers charge on average 250 plus. The more you do it the better you get and if you can do her under 2 hours you got it licked. A good shot of screech might also help. Hope you and your wife are still doing Wing videos.
Phew! What a job Paul, you can see why it would cost a lot of money to take the bike to a service centre. How long would it take from start to finish putting on a new air filter for an amateur not counting lost screw, clips and temper? As usual I enjoyed your video, and I saw your friends hands for the first time. Ha!

The work you see me doing is the first work I've done on it in four years. A couple of tires, a few seals and an air filter. It's worth that in my opinion. I'd rather not talk about the shop online. Hey Paul, thank you for putting together the video regarding air filter replacement made things pretty easy. After putting everything back together I have a ticking noise that is coming a cross the speakers. Any thoughts where I may have went wrong?
That's crazy! Why wouldn't they position the standard maintenance stuff in a more practical location? Do you have to take the engine out to change the oil?
I bought a 13 K miles 2002GL 1800 from the original owner in 2019..Thats 18 years old.He had never changed the air filter.. When I saw how complex it seems to get at the air cleaner on a GL 1800, I thought it was nuts also. But as long as you keep each bolts/screw In the exact order you removed them, I did it by using a half cardboard box and labeling each screw as I took it out and placing it in holes i put in the cardboard box.. it was actually not that bad. You have to look at it like this:It’s not one big job that you need to have six hands to do. It’s about 30 simple little jobs that you do one at a time... take out one screw, poke a hole in the cardboard box, put the screw in the hole, go to another screw, poke a hole in the cardboard box, put the screw in the hole.,, I would suggest you watch the video I put on TH-cam in titled, Goldwing made mouseproof.. because, when I removed the lid to replace the air filter, I found a mouse nest inside the air cleaner housing..it’s not the first time I found mice living inside air cleaners.. take some pictures/videos along the way you can reference in case..It really is not that tough of a job, and you will be more familiar with your machine when you’re done

Just bought a 04 gl1800, so with these videos I will be able to maintain my wing to get the most out of it. The gl1800 is new to me but not wrenching. so this TH-cam University is great for adding to an old man's knowledge. Thanks, It was well worth watching.

Great Job Paul, nice video and explanation, You had commented on the right side lockable storage, and forgetting to hook up the cable. I took the cable off at the keyed end and left the cable attached to the storage box. Just in case. Thanks Chuck.

Intimidating project for something so simple as an air filter. Very helpful, Thanks. Time to start cleaning up the garage and making lots of space on the benches to hold all this stuff.
Richard as bad as it appears it's really not bad. Just take your time and go by the video. If you have any questions just post them on this video and I'll answer them.
Paul, just ordered the air filter. Will probably get the project started right after first of the year.. gives me a few days to clean the garage and make some space for parts. Changing subjects... are you on PEI or in N.B.? Three buddies and I will be heading that way in August/September for a few weeks.
Good video I have watched this one before but it just came up again so I watched again man that is a big job I like Honda but why they couldn't have made it easier to change the air filter that's why a lot of them don't get changed when I got my wing didn't get much history with the bike i knew it needed tires I got the tires took it to the guy that does my work great guy very fussy and neat like someone else I watch on TH-cam no names mentioned lol had all the fluids changed air filter he found a little oil leak changed the valve cover gaskets and a hair line crack in one of the covers said he could fix it but he knew that I was like and got a new one that was a lot of work on the bike but I knew that everything was good and that's the I like it my god buddy this was a long story you have a great day and great job on the bike
Tom the filter seems like it’s a lot of work to change and it is for the first time but after than it’s not bad. When I did this video I did a total “go through” the bike. The bike now only has 42k on it and it’s as good as the day I bought it new in 2003. I like to keep the bikes in the best possible shape do to the precious cargo I have on with me.

I do not own a Wing, but I have changed air filters in other bikes. Amazing how much has to be removed just for the air filter. I did enjoy the vid. The more you know, the better!
Well it's really a Honda Accord without the top lol and there's a lot of technology stuffed in there. I enjoy working on the wing although they really don't need to be worked on very often.

It's a little complicated looking to some. To me it's another day in the office. I've worked on far more complicated vehicles. This is one time I can't rely on Luc to get it back together lol.
Luc if I was there like you I would have put a wind up alarm clock up on the motor some where and for sure he would have had the bike stripped down to its skivvies in no time. LOL

Man you amaze me. How in the heck can you put that back together again? Oh I could take it apart but putting all back together again and having it work is entirely different. Hats off to ya, well done. Love that bike! Love mine - most comfortable smooth powerful bike I have owned.

Hey I'm amazed myself that it went back together lol. People don't understand the why Wing owners are so loyal to their bikes and that's because they haven hit the open road on one. I've had people say to me "That's not a bike" My reply is "It's more of an experience than a bike". Remember. You meet the nicest people on a Honda :)
Riding is a passion of mine and while I choose to ride Harley's, I like all motorcycles. I'm just not sure I'd ever change an air cleaner if I had a wing! Nice one Paul and Kathy.

Paul ..There's no doubt that Honda makes a good engine, I have had no real trouble with the ones I had. The only time I had engine trouble, was on a bike that was abused or little maintenance. Also I can't express enough to do a pre - trip inspection on your bike before you ride every time !!! This has saved my skin many times eg : nail in tires, lose bolts, worn parts etc. Always check before you ride !!.......Play safe and have fun ....all is well !! Wish you safe riding !!

I had a 2008 Goldwing same color. Kept it for 2 years, my wife stopped riding and I traded it for my Harley. I never had a problem with the Goldwing and only changed the oil and filter. After watching this, I am not sad that it's gone before I needed to change the air filter. Quite the job. If you have never been on a GW it is hard to understand that they are not like any other bike out there. It rides and handles better than anything in it's class, if it has a class. I do more short rides now and for that I like the rawness of the HD. But if I ever go long distances again, it will be on a GW.

Man I've had over 40 bikes in my life. Had a lot of British bikes, metric bikes and a few US built bikes and the one I've always went back to was Honda but Honda was my first and I worked for Honda as a tech for three years so that's why the loyalty. No one builds the perfect anything my friend.

Paul, the more I watch this video and a few like it, the less intimidating it seems to be. It looks like a number of small steps to be accomplished in a certain order. I am going to take the 08 into the shop for the 24k service and inspection but after that and going forward, I will be doing all the regular maintenance on my own. The fluids look super simple. Way easier than my Harley and that is also easy enough
That’s great. None of it is terribly bad but there’s always a sequence to doing anything. ABS Wings like mine need a little extra care with the breaking system so if yours has ABS then my absolute advice would be to pick up a factory service manual. It will pay for itself on the first repair. Thanks for watching and ride safe.

Once you ride a bike with ABS brakes you’ll never go back to the old school. Believe me. It’s true. They are so good in fact all Canadian Wings have them as standard equipment on every Wing.
Purchased my Goldwing used from a fella that did not ride it much. It only had 11,000 miles on it. I did the filter change after reviewing a video on how to do it. Wow man that is the only maintenance that I hate to do. I put a K&N filter to extend the changing schedule but now after putting 25,000 miles on it I got to look again and swap it.
$ 55.00 us at O'Reilly's just checked today. Great vid.

That was one heck of a time consuming project that had to be done. Much cheaper for you to do than having it done. What about a K&M filter or don't you like them or maybe it doesn't matter since it's not a two minute job. Great job, great video, Paul.

I'm not a believer in K&M filters. They state higher HP and I don't believe it. No matter what's in the bike for a filter it still needs to be serviced so it's just as well to toss it when it's time to do it again. Thanks for watching.

Ha ha. The Boulevard is a gorgeous bike. Gee you ride, got a BX. Man we're practically twins lol.
Sadly sold the bike before moving out the wet coast. Couldn't afford the government insurance they wanted for the bike. $2400/year was outrageous. Only had 20,000km on it.
My truck insurance is horrible as well, but they must think bikers are suicidal. Bad as it is, it's worse on the mainland.
Just an example of what could happen on the Rock if you vote the wrong way provincially.

Is it cheaper to go to a Honda repair shop or buy all these tools and the manual and rent a shed for this diy-filter-change? And all the other parts that will be damaged if you are not experienced enough?

This job needs a little time with a shop manual. The first time I did it on my 04 it took me about 6 hours. The dealers charge on average 250 plus. The more you do it the better you get and if you can do her under 2 hours you got it licked. A good shot of screech might also help. Hope you and your wife are still doing Wing videos.
Phew! What a job Paul, you can see why it would cost a lot of money to take the bike to a service centre. How long would it take from start to finish putting on a new air filter for an amateur not counting lost screw, clips and temper?

The Honda GoldWing is arguably the best touring bike in the world. If this one died tomorrow I'd have another one in a week. The work you see me doing is the first work I've done on it in four years. A couple of tires, a few seals and an air filter. It's worth that in my opinion.

A comment and a question. First, this video saved me almost $200 because I replaced my filter myself with K&N instead of having the dealer do it. The question: Where did you get you GPS hood? Hey Paul, thank you for putting together the video regarding air filter replacement made things pretty easy. After putting everything back together I have a ticking noise that is coming a cross the speakers. Any thoughts where I may have went wrong?

I bought a 13 K miles 2002GL 1800 from the original owner in 2019..Thats 18 years old.He had never changed the air filter..
When I saw how complex it seems to get at the air cleaner on a GL 1800, I thought it was nuts also. But as long as you keep each bolts/screw In the exact order you removed them, I did it by using a half cardboard box and labeling each screw as I took it out and placing it in holes i put in the cardboard box.. it was actually not that bad. You have to look at it like this:It’s not one big job that you need to have six hands to do. It’s about 30 simple little jobs that you do one at a time... take out one screw, poke a hole in the cardboard box, put the screw in the hole, go to another screw, poke a hole in the cardboard box, put the screw in the hole.,,
I would suggest you watch the video I put on TH-cam in titled, Goldwing made mouseproof.. because, when I removed the lid to replace the air filter, I found a mouse nest inside the air cleaner housing..it’s not the first time I found mice living inside air cleaners..
take some pictures/videos along the way you can reference in case..It really is not that tough of a job, and you will be more familiar with your machine when you’re done
