    cannot believe people actually recommend 100 deg F for the basking area. i find it too hot at this temp. my stars won't even go near the basking area at that temp. 89F(32c) - 90F (33c)is perfect for them. love your videos btw!

    30-34c is NOT to High! It’s perfect for the day. :-)

      Thanks for your feedback 😊 Yes, I agree - I normally recommend temps between 30-32 for the day (so if it does creep up one or two degrees then they will still be in the safe range) 💚🐢

    How fast or slow do these grow? I have the opportunity to buy a hatchling, but I was hoping to start with something larger

    What are you doing for humidity? I see so many leopard owners who say they need high humidity all the time.

    • @happytortoises
      @happytortoises  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I spray the soil down the warmer end (by the basking lamp) once or twice a day, plus they have access to humid hides if they need more humidity. I am working on my humidity videos at the moment and should hopefully finish these soon... these vids go into lots of detail on humidity ranges, risks, benefits etc etc. Hopefully you'll find these videos interesting/useful! 😊🐢

    How did you keep the humidity up in the first setup?

    do you ever have any problems using soil and sand? I've read on forums that it can cause like infections or something? Idk if thats rare or if it even happens. I'd like to use soil for part of my substrate but I've stayed away from it due to the stuff ive read about it. Now im changing my mind seeing as how you use it all the time and seems like it works well.

      I've never had any issues with using top soil & play pit sand. It helps maintain humidity levels as well as being similar to the substrate found in their natural habitat 😊

    Hi, based on your experience raising the leopard tortoise can you estimate the age of my tortoise? He is 190grams and near to 4 inch.

    Cuttlefish bones is good for the tortoise?

    • @happytortoises
      @happytortoises  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, cuttlefish is a useful source of calcium for your tortoise as it contains high levels of calcium carbonate. I have another video (if you're interested) on making calcium power from cuttlefish called "DIY calcium powder for your tortoise | happytortoises" (th-cam.com/video/BL1blQRcwPo/w-d-xo.html) 😊🐢

    • @happytortoises
      @happytortoises  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I use a mixture of UVB tubes and UVB basking bulbs in my setups. I have a video "Getting set up for your baby tortoise" that goes into lots of detail on the equipment I use for hatchlings if you want more info 😊💚🐢

    you shouldn't add fake plants to your settup. The baby tortoises might eat them and it looks better without them. but great video though
